1st car owner tips

Make sure you read the fine print on your service plan, make sure you know what it covers. Park FAR away from other cars it is a bit wide so getting in and out of the car is hard. Don't drive it hard and it will serve you forever. Despite my distaste for BMW they build good cars and if you take care of it, it should take care of you.
Think I learnt this the hard way. I thought putting it in “Sport Mode” just meant speed. The brakes and suspension also change.

I drove my moms 2005 Honda crv before this FYI.

EDIT: did not drive it hard. Was under 35km/h when it happened

Remember cars also get lazy so remember to run it every now and again but it is a good motor it will last you if you take care of it just like any other car. Accept for early TATA cars my goodness nothing can save those...

37 hrs after collection. Pothole.

Buy a car they said. Damage: 3410 South African rands.

Make no mistake though. I’m on it:

Eish! Sorry about that.
I have been dodging potholes like you won’t believe, these JHB rains opened up a bunch of them, and so far *knocks on wood* have not fallen victim to one yet, but I did add VAS(or is it VAP?) rim and tire cover to my insurance to cover this, maybe check if that was not added on yours? It helps a lot.

Did you get a good picture of the pothole? Last time I claimed I remember I had to go back (I was on the way to work) and get a picture of that pothole, luckily (unluckily for others) it was still there on the way back form work.

I most definitely did. Police report and everything :)

Urgh ... so sorry to see this. I come from the Bimmer side myself, but after my prized 330i F30 (30 yr anniversary edition) had about 6 flats in 2 years and a relatively harsh ride with those run-flats, I switched over to an Audi SQ5 and haven't had one flat tyre issue in 2 years. Lots and LOTS of discussions about swapping out those run flats for regular tyres. Google's your friend. I seriously contemplated it after the 3rd or 4th tyre change... google's your friend.

Update for those interested (especially those in Jhb):

The JRA’s insurers are a**holes.

The tyres were 10 days old, it was my first time on that route, at an intersection doing 35km/h and a day after I got the car.

He called me and started punching in numbers whilst mumbling “at traffic interestectoon in the way home so 50%” I asked him (fought with him over email for weeks) why the 50% deduction and he said I had no room to negotiate as it’s just a liability claim. Involved the ombudsman and they said they couldn’t assist as I wasn’t a client (COJ are) and therefore don’t have the policy wording - as if they can’t request it. Total scam they’re running with these insurers.

ANYWAY I signed. Half is better than nothing. Pissed but whatever.

I'm surprised on the quick turn around times, I would have imagined at least 6-12 months of haggling.
