2 male ended usb (raspberry pi)

Hi guys,

I want to use my 2.5" external with my raspberry pi 2 but unfortunately the pi doesn't give enough power to spin up the HDD. The ideal solution would be a powered usb hub but I don't have one.

I found an old usb cable tonight with 2 regular male usb ports and a mini usb. As far as I know the extra usb port is used for additional power. Now my question is, can I plug the 'main' port into the pi and the other extra port into an old cellphone charger? Will this work without doing any damage to the pi or the HDD?

I would be hesitant to do it. You now have 2 different power supplies and 2x +5V/ground
The recommended solution is to get a powered usb hub to plug the hdd into +- R180. (that is what I use, powered usb hub that is 2A, feed the hdd and the pi with it, which is also not recommended but do seem to work)
 
my suggestion, hook your pi up via the ethernet port to your pc/laptop and access whatever you want to access on the hdd, via a share on the network........ or get a powered usb hub..
 
You can also try get the raspberry a better power supply.

Yeah. That is my main concern. I would rather then not try it.

My idea is to have the hdd directly on the pi as a NAS and always on download box. But yeah. Will probably have to get a powered hub.

I have a Samsung s3 charger as my power supply. Is it powerful enough? I also read somewhere last night that you can I crease the amps per usb port on the pi. Maybe this will work.

What is the Amps of the charger?

you definitely need a more powerful power supply.. the maximum power you the pi can use, model a and b, is 1amp before usb devices will need to be connected to usb powered hub.. depending on the power draw of your external, you may get away with a 2amp powersupply..

Tried this and gave up, simply too slow, pi only has 10/100 mbps. I am used to my gigabit ethernet.

Luckily I have a cheap ass router which only support 100mbps so not too much of a problem

Can you say what USB hub that is?Most I see are 2-3 times that price.
