Hi,

I've been using Pihole on a small, very low powered PC to manage my DNS queries (for ad blocking) and DHCP assignment....mostly to ensure all devices that connect to my network, gets the ad blocking provided by Pihole.
So, that means I turned off the DHCP service on my D-Link DIR-825 G1 (on latest 7.01 firmware) router (provided by Afrihost).

Now, problem is when I enable the guest network on the router, to provide guests with an internet connection, I have to enable the 'Enable Routing Between Zones' option, otherwise they don't get a DHCP address.....but that defeats the purpose of the guest network, by segmenting the network to ensure they can't just go mad on my shares (and other open services in my house).

I have tried various options on the router, but, it's just not cut out for a more advanced setup.....(or I'm missing it!)

So... I want 2 'networks' (Vlan) from my router, one for the family to access everything on my home server and the internet, and a second one for guests, while still using the Pihole device for DHCP and DNS..... is there any consumer grade hardware that will allow me to do such a setup? Or if this can be done with my currect setup.....how???

Ta!

You are looking for the DHCP relay option or sometimes called Ip helper

Yeah....gone through all the settings again....that option does not exist on this router, and I doubt it will ever be added, as it's fairly old. Guess that's why it's 'for free' when getting Fibre installed.

Like syntax said, but suspect you need to replace your router for one that has those capabilities. Even if you have that on the Dlink I don't think you can create another DHCP pool on the Pi-Hole, so will not work either way.

You would need a DHCP server where you can setup multiple DHCP pools.
Then also a router/switch that has vlan capabilities, and the router must support multiple vlan interfaces if it's not a layer 3 switch...

Cheapest would probably be a Mikrotik router

You can....just not via the GUI...all command line (dnsmasq.conf)... so seems it's just the DHCP relay and VLAN support I need.
Any recomendations from personal use maybe? (*Still need decent 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz coverage)

I went with a Unifi AC AP, a layer 3 Cisco 3750X switch, and a Fortigate 60E firewall. (I only paid for the AP, rest was free :) )

Not using the guest functionality of Unifi, but just a separate VLAN for guests

The open guest network is segmented by a ACL on the cisco switch, guest clients still query both the Pi-Hole servers on my home lan, but that's it, rest is blocked by the ACL.

If I were you I would go for a Mikrotik router and a Unifi AP

It looks like this will do the job for me...:
Ubiquiti UniFi Dual Band AC Lite AP - UAP-AC-LITE
Ubiquiti Edge Router X 4-Port Gigabit Router ER-X

guess I'll be back once I need a bit of help with it!
