20 Linux apps you can't live without

Um... These are quite nice applications, but a bit specialised. I don't think *EVERY* Linux user needs CAD programs or mathematics programs or complex graphics editors??

My list of not-so-essential-but-probably-quite-useful applications (in no particular order):
1) Firefox (browser)
2) Vim (text editor)
3) Conky (system monitor)
4) VLC (video player)
5) Openoffice (office productivity)
6) gEdit / Kate (more advanced editor)
7) Brasero / K3B (disc-burning software)
8) compiz fusion (mostly eyecandy, but also a lot of efficiency-boosting features)
9) compizconfig-settings-manager (to configure compiz fusion)
10) avant-window-navigator (mac-like dock, requires compositing manager (like compiz fusion) )
11) msttcorefonts (fonts that make a Windows world more bearable to Linux users)
12) bwm (BandWidth Manager, use it to see what's happening in your connections in a top-like view)
13) startupmanager (manage startup options like splash screen, grub settings etc)
14) bootchart (view your boot sequence's timeline, useful for diagnosing slow boots)
15) ndiswrapper (for troublesome wireless adapters)

Gets more specialised / preference-oriented from here:
16) GNU Octave (mathematics)
17) TeXLive (TeX)
18) gEdit LaTeX plugin ('nuff said)
19) audacious (lightweight winamp-like music player)
20) transmission (bittorrent client)

lemme guess... you're a KDE user, right? :D

Hmmmm, let's see:
hellanzb

great program this. i supplement my use of it with LottaNZB for a gui frontend.

although i find these days i just use the command line options for hellanzb more and more

I suppose the list of useful programs is more a personal choice, since not everyone really knows how to use shell, or even use KDE / Gnome.

Some important apps I always install first:

vim
dig
iptables
lynx
mutt
links
blackbox (lightweight X server, quicker than KDE & Gnome)
firefox

....... and some more, I can't think of them all

That list sucks. :p
It includes propriety software, which is definitely not indispensable to most Linux users. :p
It also does not include vim ... what kind of Linux user doesn't need vim? :p

My list:

Xine for DVD's
Mplayer for all other movie formats + mencoder for erm backups. ;)
Rythmbox for my Ogg collection, but I'm not fussy.. any decent media player will do.
Evolution email client.
Firefox
vim
gcc, autotools and any other common compiling / development tools.
Flightgear - for a bit of fun in the sky :)
wget - great for downloading files / whole websites.
gnome-terminal or any other decent virtual terminal .. what would I do without one

Oh well.. thats about all I can think of offhand. :)

amazing how i have never heard of these killer apps

any way my list is
amarok
kaffeine
kchm
djview
kate
gwenview
opera
konqueror
gkrellm
compiz
kppp
yakuake

looked at the list after your comment. wow i was quite shocked at the collection and how long i've lived without any of the products.trying out that ceemedia one though.

Mine would definitely have to be:

Firefox (and all the bells and whistles that go along with it)
Kchm
Kaffeine
Compiz
Konsole!!!!!:D
Kate
Konqueror
SuperKaramba
Amarok
NeroLinux:p

Was hoping for more of a CLI list of applications... Only app out of this whole thread I know is FireFox, and thats due to popularity of the application ;-)
