20 Mb and VDSL router

Hi guys,

hope is the right place to ask. Recently my exchange was upgraded to 20Mb and i checked with telkom and now i can get 20Mb line, they even asked me if i want to get upgraded. I looked around and the only VDSL routers that i can find was Pace (from Telkom, not an option) and Zyxel. Are there any other brands available and most importantly is there a way (if someone knows) to loan, borrow a VDSL modem/router before i buy one. I don't want to upgrade my line to VDSL, spent 1500-1600 on the router to find out that does not work properly or the line is not stable. I'm asking for help from the guys that all ready done this and went the VDSL route. I know it might be little bit too much to ask, but any help is highly appreciated.

I'm currently busy with a 20mb upgrade too.
Got the Pace modem from telkom for like R1200 , also asked them if I could return the modem if I'm not satisfied with the VDSL service or the service does not work , and they said yes , as long as I have the receipt.

Having some issues with trying to get onto VDSL , but currently my adsl syncs at 15mb so i'm happy for now , until they sort out my issues with the upgrade.
 
I have just gone through the same upgrade. I got the pace VDSL router from telkom and despite having very basic features its not bad and doesnt hasnt given me any issues so far

My upgrade also took a couple weeks. They bumped me to 15mb ADSL then after a while to 20mb vdsl and the line stats are looking good.

I am very happy so far
 
Have both a Pace and a xyzel, no troubles on either. Use both as modems only though (bridge).

Thanks guys for the replies. I was thinking of doing it and probably i will, if i don't find other way. I don't really want to buy the telkom one, because if does work i will be stuck with a router that i don't really want. And gonna have to sell it for half price and buy new one. Do we have any other brands apart from Zyxel and Pace? Also how is your connection guys is it stable. I need stable connection for my IP TV.

I had a Belkin router that use to disconnect quite alot which i thought was probably a line issue. Must say i'm actually very impressed with the telkom pace router. Much more stable than the Belkin. Stays connected for days at a time with the odd disconnect. Only know it disconnected when Netflix or Hulu plus stop working and I have to refresh the ip address , otherwise i wudnt even have known it disconnected.

One issue though, you can't set dns on the pacer router which sucks , as I was using a roku 3. But apple tv working 100%.
 
Stay away from Zyxel if you can - I'm sure most are fine but I've had mine returned to WebAfrica three times to get fixed, one time it was replaced entirely and it's broken again - back to my trusty 8 year old Netgear..
 
You can set DNS on the pace router just not via the web interface. Have to change it via cli commands in putty. Got the details if any of you want
 
Currently using the Zyxel, but only in bridge mode with an Asus RT-N66U

So I set the DNS on the Asus.

All working well, but the Zyxel gave me some initial hassles, just wouldn't work in VDSL - had to reset to factory settings a few times.
 
Hi there, You can choose between ADSL2+ or VDSL for 20mbps. Only difference is uploads I believe and paying stupid amount for router.

I am currently using a tenda ADSL 2+ router in bridge mode to a mikrotik :) . tenda was R180 and mikrotik is cheap and powerful.

We also had the issue of only syncing at 15mbps but now it is very stable at 20mbps ADSL 2+.

VDSL router I can recommend the PACE - i know it is not priced the best but everyone I know that has one says no reboots or funny issues with it. the zyxels now and then needs reboots as well the asus. apparently the asus is very bad. Well friend had two of them and both packed up within a week.

My PACE VNX VDSL/ADSL modem/router has been running for a month and a half now since I got it without any problems or disconnects. MY first ever ADSL modem so i'm not sure if this is good?

For those of you looking at the Asus DSL-N66U.

I have been playing with the DSL-N66U on my 20mbps VDSL line for a couple of days now. Surprisingly this is the first ASUS product that I have used where I have had issues. The Telkom Pace router connects and is solid as a rock, but I need VPN pass though. The DSL-N66U took a while to get going, but its very unstable on the DSL side with frequent disconnects. I have played with all the stability settings, but the best I could achieve was an hour and a half of up time, before it lost sync on the DSL side. Asus seem to be releasing regular firmware updates, so I guess its still work in progress. I am using the latest firmware 1.0.7.0, but going to play with the earlier versions to see if they are any better. One really interesting statistic I found was the the DSL-N66U reported that my downstream line attenuation was almost 20db's worse than what the Pace reports, not sure if this is an indication that the DSL front end of the DSL-N66U is inferior to the Pace.

So right now if you are looking for a super stable VDSL2 router, this is possibly not the one to go for.

Hi Satguy, use the Pace for DSL connection and a RT-N66U for the routing. I believe the DSL-N66U isnt as stable as other brands.

Netgear - VEGN2200 (not to be confused with DGN2200) - but good luck trying to get one, it looks like a 'cardboard' product from Netgear.

What do you mean "cardboard" product? Did some Google searching, and you're right, can't be found anywhere. Even Amazon.com doesn't list it. Looks like they sell direct to telcos only.

Did you have to tell Telkom to leave your line as ADSL and just increase the speed? If this is possible i would like to do that as well. Makes perfect sense from financial perspective. I don't care much about the upload speed. Would you please share more information, how exactly did you do it.
