If you were to look at Pontings captaincy record you would have to conclude he is the best captain the world has ever seen, right?
But I think my dog would be able to captain the Aussies to a Test match victory.
Most people agree that Flemming was the best Test captain in his day, but I am sure his captaincy record does not look that good either.
There is a bit more to captaincy that just a win / lose pecentage.
Shame, you cannot see a person or personality and personal performance in figures. He is still young and upcoming and is not in the seat so long YET. I have seen those figures and sure they show some results but say nothing of the difficulty wit quotas and poor performances by Ntini in the beginning! IMO he will be the best Captain we ever had if the government do not fsuck it up as they do with everything else.

You asked us to be honest and tell you when last did Smith contribute with the bat. I then gave you an answer.
Rather tell me why you dont see that hundred as a contribution with the bat? and why a average of 61 over 2 tests is not considered "contributing with the bat"??
You fail to take in to account the political pressure involved in the make up of the team during Smith's reign as captain over that period, in both the ODI & Test teams. Hansie experienced it towards the end of his time as captain.
The South African cricket team has not always been selected on merit.
And in what context is that relevant? Obviously any score effects the average.

Yeah...I think the team that you have plays a big role. Sometime there's so much you can do but Smith wasn't really a good captain in his early stages. I had a lot of doubt in him when he was made captain after Polly. In the last year or so he has proven that he can be and imo, is a good captain.
LOL, from what you have said it shows your ignorance on cricket. An opening bat has the most difficult job to perform in the batting line up. When the ball is new, it seams and swings all over the place. Opening batsmen more often than not get unplayable deliveries. Batsmen that come in down the order have a much easier time. Thats why you will see opening bats getting a low score one game and a good score the next.

Are you saying that the quality of SA players is so much lower than the Aussies? If so, I beg to differ. We have just as many quality players to choose from (with the excetion IMO of GS of course
). The difference is in the leadershipWell get some figures and then we can see
Like what? Sportsmanship maybe, leading your team by example maybe, not getting involved in off-the-field sledging maybe, acknowledging your shortcomings/failings and not blaming things like the pitch ??
Hmmm... seems to me old GS fails on all those accounts

and when the ball gets older it's harder to spot and bounce is inconsistent. the ball gets soft. so ur argument is null and void.

I wont call him the best captain we ever had. But he is far from being the worst, and is also the only option we have at the moment.
Kallis was offered the captaincy more than once, and declined more than once. He even quite the vice-captaincy.
Same with Boucher, was offered more than once and declined more than once. Even declined the vice-captaincy.
Smith was offered the captaincy after playing only a handful of tests at the age of 22. And took the job without complaining. That in itself has to tell you something about the man. Even if its just that he rates himself, but you need that as an international captain

Why do you not consider his scores in Pak as contributions??
Again you show how little you know and your ignorance about cricket! Why is there a batting line up you your view? Why is most nightwatchmen out so soon? Play in another thread

that's exactly my point. 100 pushes up his average for the series. it doesn't mean he was consistent in the series. it actually means, the other scores were low. but you guys are taking it a little too far. if u go back to what i initially said, i said i like him as a captain and blah blah blah. i don't have a problem with him. infact, my real criticism is on herschelle. i have to be honest, i haven't been following the NZ test nor the one's in Pakistan. i like Graeme. i think he is a great captain and leader. he's tough and loves a challenge. i don't have a problem with him. i just sometimes feel that when certain "star" players are performing poorly, they get away with it. like gibbs for example - before the Pakistani tour if u look at his record, he scores one fify every 10 innings and makes buggerall in the meantime. if they were to fight for their positions in the team(like in Aus), we would see much better, consistent performances. that's just my 2c went of crap.
