Strange, one can call someone by a term such as this that implies total disrespect but if you substitute the word Mampara with a word like arsehole that also implies total disrespect it is in some way worse. Why is that?

Probably because calling someone an "arsehole" reflects badly on the caller themselves by sounding crass. So "mampara" gives them a way of calling names without having any of the muck land on themselves. I guess it's a way of name calling without having to drop to their level.

Or maybe it's just dangerous to overanalyse any of this stuff :D

I replied to that thread and said I do think at times people deserve to be called Mampara's that lady is hampering progress therfore she is a mampara. I said that becuase the likes of Mbeki was there.

EDIT: Actually after further thought that thread wasnt that disrespectfull. Public must say what they feel.

South Africans have to learn to say what they feel without fear of oppression... that said politicians (god help me if I should become one I will have to bite my tongue) are fair game as they are in the public and the only way the public can express dissatisfaction is at the polls, voting and by public speaking - so speak away by being succinct and erudite.

fools will always show themselves for what they are without any unnecessary mudslinging.;-)
