It goes without saying the something has to be done about the crime situation ahead of the WC to demonstrate to FIFA that they have a handle on it, but so far there's just been lip service with indications that they intend to implement some temporary security arrangement just for the duration of the WC.

I was really hopeful that the WC would have a positive benefit for us all in the form of reduced crime and actual policing on an ongoing basis, but it looks like I'm too naive.

Has anyone else seen any positive steps to reduce crime?

Yes, I heard that the criminals have pretty much got what they wanted now. All of them have Hiluxes, TVs and cellphones... so you should see a significant drop in crime any day now.

With the high interest rates and recent credit crunch/crisis, the criminals aren't able to "borrow" as much from us anymore - so yes, I expect crime levels to come down.

Criminals will be too busy watching footie to bother committing any crimes

The problem is that the crimanals are constantly spawning... That is a exponential growth in demand for Hiluxes, TVs and cellphones... :D

The root of all evil. Spawning young, violent, disrespectful, lazy and useless criminals.

There are some positives of course e.g. new equipment, improved co-ordination etc.

The world cup is an event with a security plan, just like the cricket world cup or a UN conference. The decision to turn things around with regards to crime is a decision that needs to be made by SAPS which is essentially government. Since SAPS is run nationally cities have very little power to change things if the SAPS are in denial.

There are however excellent examples. Crime in the Cape Town Central City stretching from Woodstock to Sea Point has dropped by 60% over the last 5 years. 28% during the last year. This is due to a commitment by the Cape Town Partnership and the City, to ensure visible policing, improved response times and other minor interventions. Of course, a reduction in crime of 60% in a CBD is not going to make headlines, but a 2% increase will.

Pity Zille and gang don't run any other places huh ...... Also a pity that CT will be the only safer 2010 destination.

**COUGH COUGH***

OK, lets check the statistics.

CapeTown Central.
19 murders (March 2002), DOWN, 17 murders (March 2008) down by 2 murders. Not close to 60% down...
55 Rapes (march 2002), DOWN, 32 rapes (March 2008), down by a few but figures like this are terribly high and worrying.
7 Carjacking (March 2002), UP, 22 in March 2008.

With crime figures like the above, who on earth actually cares if they come down by a few percent. I mean, 55 rapes in Cape Town CBD in one year, 17 murders, heeeellllooooo HHHEEELLLLOOOO!!!! is anybody out there……..???? That’s more than one a month, and more than 1 rape per week in Cape Town CBD, (nice place Cape Town CBD to walk the little girls on a Sunday afternoon, and the CBD is not exactly very big either!!!). Figures like these are disturbing and are figures from a society which has something seriously wrong with it (or maybe the wild west?!?) 7 kidnappings in Cape Town CBD (WTF)!!! These figures are hectic!!! And I must take my girls for a walk down town?? Let alone the dog!!! And here comes the crunch... Slat my dood met n pap snoek...…. Cape Town CBD is probably the safest CBD in South Africa.

Sure some of the things have come down according to the stats, but others have increased very dramatically since 2002. IE, Malicious damage to property (doubled in the last few years), Drug-related crime (doubled in last few years), Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs (also nearly doubled), Abduction (UP). Neglect and ill-treatment of children (Up by 800%) Public violence, UP, Culpable homicide UP. Commercial crime UP, All theft not mentioned elsewhere (up). Robbery at residential premises (subcategory of aggravated robbery), Up big big time. Robbery at business premises (subcategory of aggravated robbery), UP BIG BIG BIG time….

Crime has not come down, we all know that.

I agree with you that Cape Town is a good example of something being done - I visited CT for two nights recently and noticed the visible policing day and night, but the disturbing part for me was that it was what looked like a private security company and not the SAPS who are responsible for this and who we all pay for this.

Helen sure is showing up the rest of the self centred corrupt pricks ruling the rest of the country.

I fear that our useless "leaders" will attempt to provide security for the duration of the games only - I was hoping FIFA would insist that they demonstrate that they have a handle on the situation ahead of the point of no return with regards the decision to go ahead with the WC in SA.

Trust me when the world cup nears we will see the cops everywhere, once its finished let the murder begin.

Perhaps they plan to pull most of the police to the WC site during the matches. Who cares if the people at home get robbed, murdered or raped, as long as the rest of the world "thinks" SA is safe.

I never said crime was not an issue, but crime in the CBD has been reduced significantly, and I feel safe along with the hundreds of thousands of tourists who walk through it daily.

I'm gonna go with the Cape Town Partnership on this one. The effect of their work has been clearly visible and has been felt by everybody. Feel free to contact them if you have problems with their stats. They are seriously transforming the CBD day by day and its moved forward leaps and bounds from the grimy crimy days of the 90's.
