2012 Mac Mini and SSD poor performance

So I connected the original HDD via USB and rebooted holding down OPTION key but the drive did not appear, only the installed SSD. Would the recovery partition still be there even tho I erased the HDD using disk utility?

Really running out of ideas here. Is there no way I can insert my serial number somewhere or something to be able to download the Mountain Lion Installer to reinstall?

Ah - that erasing would've killed your recovery partition. You are SOL. Unless you have patience. Mine is at my daughter's mother's house and I will only be going there later in the week to do a Time Machine and sort out an issue or two. I could try copy the recovery at that point.

I thought as much but was worth a try. I am looking for a Mountain lion download online, that way I can do a fresh install and then download all the updates ect - I wouldn't have any problems updating ect would I if it is a direct Mac App Store download?. I can see the iLife Suite under my purchase history in the App store which is at least good. Thats the only other thing I can think of now at this point.

If I cant get this sorted out by then, then that would be very helpful thanks.

Just a quick thought (I don't have anything in front of me to check this, so you'll need to do this)

In terminal, type:
Code:
ls -laF
(those are lower case letter L, not capital I or number 1)
In the result, do you see anything along the lines of Install OS X?

No unfortunately not.

Why don't you go and get a copy from one of your local apple stores?

Alternatively download a copy from the net.

I'd love something so simple like that, but the only way that would be possible is for me to purchase it again and I don't see that as "fair" seeing as I purchased the mac brand new last week. If all else fails then I suppose I will have to re-purchase again but that will be my last option - you know what I mean?

The copies at the apple stores, if they exist, will not be free and will most likely not support the latest System Enablers. Same with a download copy.

I say most likely because there is the slim possibility that someone at a local apple store has a clue.

I am busy downloadinga copy of Mountain Lion 10.8 - hopefully this one will allow me to create a bootable flash drive to re-install.

From above:
To redownload the installer on a computer running OS X Lion or OS X Mountain Lion, press and hold the Option key while you click the Purchases tab. If the button to the right of the Install OS X Lion or OS X Mountain Lion item doesn't change to "Install" and allow you to download OS X, use Spotlight to search for "Install OS X Lion or OS X Mountain Lion" on your computer.

I tried this earlier but doesn't do anything at all. It still wants me to purchase.

When you set up your Mini for the first time did you register it?

When you set up your Mini for the first time did you register it?

When I turned it on for the first time, it just asked me to insert my Apple ID which I did, then it asked if I want to setup as new machine or restore from backup, chose new machine and then booted to the desktop. Where am I meant to register?

I have recently installed an SSD to my 2012 mac mini. I used Super Duper to copy the original drive to the SSD, installed the SSD and booted up and all worked fine. My only concern is that it doesnt seem to have made that much of a difference when launching programmes or booting up ect - there still seems to be a lag/wait.

The SSD is a Kingston Hyper X 120gig. I have installed the Trim Enabler app and it is veririfed that it is on. The SSD has "SandForce controller technology" - Is that a problem at all, even maybe with Trim Enabler? Is there something else I need to do/change?

Any help will be great.

Thanks.

Do not enable TRIM. SF based SSD will already have TRIM enabled by default & maybe reenforcing this would add more overhead & the iops speeds would come down. It worked for me & hence sharing my experience.

Make sure you download 10.8.3 and not 10.8.2. 10.8.2 from the App Store is not compatible with the 2012 Mac Mini. I had a problem with this a while back and contacted Apple support. I was told to wait for 10.8.3.

Also, there is no way you can get a copy of Mountain Lion from the App Store without paying. Apple expect you to use the recovery partition to install. I was so pissed off about that when I bought my MacBook Pro that I eventually just bought the damn thing and got it over and done with. Now I can download it and keep it for both my Mac Mini and MacBook Pro. For whatever strange reason, iLife will automatically link itself to your Apple ID but not Mountain Lion or Lion.

Yeah I have kinda come to that conclusion that the best way will be for me to buy it. Trying the internet recovery process but even on my 4mb line, it is taking forever. If it stalls or fails then will have to buy it I suppose...

Im running 2 750GB Seagate hybrid drives on RAID in my 17-inch macbook Pro and this is the speed I get.

I hear some SSD drives are slow.

Dude - those speeds are not bad for hybrids.. i am considering a hybrid because 128GB doesnt cut it anymore :(
are you running this model : seagate momentus XT ST750LX003?

Pity you are not close by. I would have downloaded 10.8.3 for you from the App Store. Hopefully your download doesn't time out or something...

Yeah I am still stuck in the Internet Recovery, half way through got told there was a connectivity error so I clicked retry and has been stuck on 127 hours remaining for the last 30 minutes. So just cancelled it and started over and now is saying 5 hours remaining. This is on a 4mb line too so not sure what is going on. The other problem I have now is my SSD has been wiped already so even if I can download Mountain Lion, not too sure how I will go about installing it just yet (don't think I can create a bootable flash using windows) so that is the next challenge!!!
