2016 Ford GT

Ford GT 2017 UK review

Should I buy one?

Well, while those are all things that may stand between this car and a class-topping recommendation within our supercar niche, none of them actually detracts much from its utterly singular appeal.

I don’t think I’ve ever driven anything that so cleverly delivers the unmistakable grip, performance and sense of a world-class competition machine, all packaged in a car that you’d choose to drive on the road. If this is the way the highest echelons of the performance car market are moving - and the emergence of cars such as the Mercedes-AMG Project One and Aston Martin Valkyrie suggests this is the case - the Ford GT shows they can move that way without giving any of us reason to fear for the long-term health of the fast road car.

Ford GT Heritage Edition

The new 2019 Ford GT Heritage Edition honors the legendary American Gulf Oil-sponsored Ford GT40 by featuring the most famous paint scheme in motorsports - plus a set of additional exclusive touches.

"Many view the Gulf Oil paint scheme as the most famous in motorsports," said Joe Hinrichs, Ford president, global operations. "The 1968 GT40 quickly became a global sensation after beating its European competitors on the track four times in a row, and in honor of the 50th anniversary of its win, we're paying fresh tribute to the original with a new heritage limited edition."

Known among racing enthusiasts as chassis No. 1075, the 1968 GT was one of just a few individual cars to achieve repeat victories in the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

For the first time, an optional package provides exposed carbon fiber accents for both the interior and exterior of the Ford GT Heritage Edition. For 2019, the package features the No. 9 graphics on the hood and doors, as well as a ghosted image on the interior door panels. For 2020, No. 6 honors the same car that went on to win Le Mans in 1969 with a different number.

The 2019 Ford GT Heritage Edition features exposed carbon fiber A-pillars and sports unique 20-inch one-piece forged aluminum wheels in high-gloss dark stainless with black lug nuts. Orange calipers and silver rearview mirror caps complete the look.

Ebony Alcantara wraps the seats, instrument panel, pillars, headliner and steering wheel. Contrasting blue and orange stitching accentuates the seats and steering wheel, with a new seat embossment inspired by the original 1968 Le Mans-winning car as well as clear and polished anodized paddle shifters.

High-gloss dark stainless appliqués accent the instrument panel, door register bezels and x-brace to round out the interior.

Much like previous heritage models, the Ford GT Heritage Edition features a unique serialized identification plate, plus exposed matte carbon fiber door sills, air register pods and center console.

"We are delighted to partner with Ford to help the Gulf-themed Heritage Edition Ford GT become reality. The Ford Marque has played a major role in creating Gulf's place in motoring and motorsporting legend and the same is true in reverse," enthused MD of Gulf Oil Lubricants India Ltd, Ravi Chawla. "Every Gulf outright victory at Le Mans has been Ford-powered and of course Gulf Ford GT40s took the latter two wins of Ford's four consecutive victories at Le Mans from 1966-1969. What could be more fitting than both brands coming together to produce this fantastic motor car - the modern spiritual successor to the amazing Gulf-Ford GT40s that took Le Mans and World Championship honours."

Ford GT Carbon Series

The Ford GT Carbon Series will be shredding tracks soon as the lightest of the road-going Ford supercars - and unlike its sibling racer, it will want to be driven home after time sheets are collected.

The new limited-edition model drops nearly 40 pounds with a host of lightweighting innovations such as carbon fiber wheels, a titanium exhaust, titanium lugnuts and a polycarbonate rear hatch with additional venting.

Ford engineers added just enough conveniences - air conditioning, a radio and SYNC® 3 - for those customers who want to drive to and from the track in comfort. But they drew the line to keep the weight in check by removing cupholders and the driver's side seat storage bin.

This third Ford GT special edition features more visible carbon fiber than any previous model, along with optional accent colors, to stand out from the lineup and communicate its chicane cravings.

"The Ford GT Carbon Series stands out on the road with its striking carbon fiber-rich design and on the track with its athleticism," says Hermann Salenbauch, global director, Ford Performance. "It is yet another example of how we can bring to life our Le Mans-winning supercar in new and exciting ways so our customers can share in that magical legacy."

The exterior boasts two exposed carbon fiber stripes with matching A-pillars, lower body panels and gloss carbon fiber wheels. The interior features matte carbon fiber sills, air register pods and center console for the most exposed carbon fiber of any Ford GT.

Customers can choose between four optional accent colors - silver, orange, red or blue - for the mirror caps, center stripe and calipers. The Carbon Series also features a unique seat pattern with silver stitching that is repeated on the steering wheel, as well as complementary clear anodized paddle shifters and a unique badge for the instrument panel.

Ford GT Mk II

Ford and Multimatic reveal at the 2019 Goodwood Festival of Speed the Ford GT Mk II, a limited-edition, track-only GT that represents the next stage in Ford GT performance.

With a 700 horsepower 3.5-litre EcoBoost engine, race-proven aerodynamics and competition-oriented handling, the Ford GT Mk II has been co-developed by Ford Performance and Multimatic based on competitive learnings from Ford's successful FIA World Endurance Championship and IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship campaigns with the Ford GT race car - yet GT Mk II is engineered independent of race series rules, regulations and limitations.

"The GT Mk II unleashes the full performance potential of the Ford GT without any artificial performance limitations dictated by racing sanctioning bodies," said Hau Thai-Tang, Ford chief product development and purchasing officer. "It's the closest GT owners can get to the Le Mans-winning performance and exhilarating feeling of crossing the finish line in the Ford GT race car."

Ford GT

Ford Performance announces upgrades to the Ford GT supercar for 2020, including increased engine power to 660 horsepower and improved cooling.

Much of the 2020 Ford GT's advancements are a result of Ford's continuous technological innovation, especially GT's 3.5-liter EcoBoost® twin-turbo V6.

"Ford GT continues to be the pinnacle of Ford performance," said Ed Krenz, Ford Performance chief program engineer. "GT is always the ultimate expression of Ford racing innovation, and as we know from the 1966 Le Mans through today, that means constantly raising our game for our customers as well as earning the checkered flag."

Continuous EcoBoost Innovation

Beyond 13 additional horsepower compared to 2017-19 GT supercars, the 2020 GT's EcoBoost engine features a broader torque band and revised engine calibration plus mechanical upgrades that include gallery-cooled pistons and higher-energy ignition coils, thanks to lessons learned from the limited-edition, track-only GT Mk II.

Ford GT updated for 2020 with more power, new features

Ford Performance flagship now available with exposed carbonfibre bodywork option

Ford has updated its GT supercar for 2020 with increased power, additional standard features and subtle mechanical tweaks inspired by the track-only GT MkII launched last year.

The GT retains its 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6, but power output has been slightly boosted from 647bhp to 660bhp with the addition of higher-energy ignition coils and a new type of ‘gallery-cooled’ piston design, which helps the engine to perform better at high temperatures.

Ford GT Heritage Edition

As a tribute to the Ford GT supercar, the prototype vehicle that gave life to the program more than a half-century ago, Ford is introducing the 2022 Ford GT '64 Prototype Heritage Edition. The limited-edition vehicle is inspired by the 1964 Ford GT prototype that debuted at the New York International Auto Show on April 3, 1964 and went on to become America's only Le Mans-winning supercar.

"This is the first Ford GT Heritage Edition that goes beyond celebrating race wins - this one goes deep, and honors the earliest of Ford supercar heritage," said Mike Severson, Ford GT program manager. "The Ford GT '64 Prototype Heritage Edition is a modern interpretation of the original, with no mistaking what this car is paying tribute to."

The Ford GT '64 Prototype Heritage Edition shares the spotlight at 2021 Monterey Car Week, with the only remaining 1964 Ford GT prototype, GT/105, still wearing the original livery.

Limited-run Ford GT pays tribute to 1964 prototype

Ford's 647bhp supercar gains blue decals and updated interior in homage to prototype of Le Mans winner

The Ford GT will gain a limited-run model to pay homage to the prototypes that led to the firm’s Le Mans-winning supercar, featuring racing decals and exposed carbonfibre.

The GT ’64 Prototype Heritage Edition was revealed at the Monterey Car Week, appearing alongside the last remaining Ford GT/105 prototype from 1964.

The 647bhp model gains Wimbledon White exterior paint with blue graphics, including an over-the-roof triple racing stripe. It also recieves silver brake calipers and exposed carbonfibre features, including the 20in wheels, mirror stalks, side sills, engine louvers, front splitter and rear diffuser.

Carbonfibre also adorns the interior, with the door sills, A-pillars and centre console finished in the material, partnered with blue Alcantara seats with silver stitching. The steering wheel, meanwhile, is finished in Ebony Alcantara with black stitching.

“This is the first Ford GT Heritage Edition that goes beyond celebrating race wins. This one goes deep and honors the earliest of Ford supercar heritage,” said Ford GT programme manager Mike Severson.

Ford GT Heritage Edition debuts at Monterey signalling end of production

A modern interpretation of the original, the Ford GT Heritage Edition pays homage to the 1964 Ford GT prototypes that led to America’s only Le Mans-winning supercar, a Le Mans champion from 1966 to 1969, and again in 2016.

As the Ford GT enters its final year of production in 2022, Ford has added another tribute to its Heritage Edition series. It combines classic Ford Performance features such as Wimbledon White paint, a triple racing stripe with contemporary touches including exposed carbon fibre behind Antimatter Blue-painted carbon fibre wheels, and of course Lightspeed Blue Alcantara seats. An exposed carbon fibre front splitter, side sills, mirror stalks, engine louvres and rear diffuser finished in gloss add to the modern aesthetic of the special edition homage, the sixth in the ultra-limited-production Heritage Edition series.

First and only Ford GT lands in Africa, forms part of rare Blue Oval sports car collection

The first and only Ford GT has landed in South Africa, but the car is not for sale locally.

First launched in select global markets in 2015, the car quickly became an instant hit and classic for the Blue Oval, and the limited production run enhanced its exclusivity. And now that the car has made landfall in South Africa, it completes one of the rarest GT collections in the world.

Colin Lazarus, owner of Lazarus Ford in Centurion, is the only person in Africa to own this unique car and completes the GT family that includes a 1965 Ford GT40 MK1 and a 2005 Ford GT. His collection consists of a 1971 Mustang Mach 1 and a 2001 F150 SVT Lightning.

Lazarus says: "I was incredibly fortunate to be able to get this 2020 Ford GT into the country. But having the other two GTs proved how passionate and serious I was about these Fords and the bearing they have on Ford's greatest motorsport achievements. Seeing everybody's reaction to these three cars is terrific for the brand and illustrates the evolution of technology and performance. I doubt there is another private collection like it anywhere in the world."

Lazarus' 2020 GT is powered by Ford's twin-turbo 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6 engine producing 492kW and 746Nm. 0-100km/h is cleared in three seconds, and the top speed is rated at 350km/h. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a dual-clutch automatic gearbox.

Latest-gen Ford GT supercar arrives in SA, but it’s not for sale

Honouring Ford’s illustrious racing history, the latest-generation Ford GT supercar became a very sought after machine after it was unleashed in 2015.

However, this supercar was destined to be forbidden fruit for South Africans given that it was only produced in left-hand drive format and numbers were very limited too.

Yet despite this, and the fact that it can’ legally be driven on the road, one of South Africa’s most avid car collectors has managed to bring one into the country to complete one of the rarest GT collections in the world.

Colin Lazarus, owner of Lazarus Ford in Centurion, has become the only person on the African continent to own the latest-generation Ford GT. This ultimate Ford supercar joins his 1965 Ford GT40 MK1 and previous generation 2005 Ford GT, with all three playing an influential part in representing 50 years of Ford motorsport.

“I was incredibly fortunate to be able to get this 2020 Ford GT into the country,” Colin Lazarus admitted, “but having the other two GTs proved how passionate and serious I was about these Fords and the bearing they have on Ford’s greatest motorsport achievements.

“Seeing everybody’s reaction to these three cars is terrific for the brand and illustrates the evolution of technology and performance. I doubt there is another private collection like it anywhere in the world,” he added.
