MSO McLaren 570GT celebrates 20 years since F1 XP GT ‘Longtail’

Latest McLaren Special Operations model comes in same XP green paint

McLaren Special Operations has produced a special-edition version of the 570GT to celebrate 20 years since the original F1 XP GT ‘Longtail’ was built.

Six units of MSO’s latest car will be produced for customers in the UK, Germany and the Netherlands, each painted in the same XP green colour as the first Longtail homologation special. The six models also wear MSO exterior trim and get Saddle Tan leather seats with contrasting green stitching. Each car gets a plaque to signify its build number.

As standard, MSO is fitting its Upgrade Pack, adding a vehicle lift system, rear-view camera, Bowers & Wilkins audio system and car cover. The car sits on five-spoke forged wheels.

No changes have been made to the drivetrain, so it sticks with McLaren’s twin-turbocharged 3.8-litre V8 engine that produces 562bhp and 443lb ft, enabling a 0-62mph time of 3.4sec and a 204mph top speed.

Based on McLaren’s most practical model, the 570GT, the car offers 370 litres of boot space, 220 litres more than the regular 570S. Its chassis settings are also unchanged from the standard 570GT, so it has suspension that’s 15% softer at the front and 10% softer the rear compared with the regular 570S.

The original McLaren F1 XP GT of 1997 was produced as a homologation model with a new Longtail body that increased downforce on the original F1 GTR race car it was designed to improve on. The XP GT spawned a production version called the F1 GT, which was built in three units. Its racing equivalent, the F1 GTR Longtail, finished as high as second at the 24 Hours of Le Mans that year.

The 570GT follows the P1 XP Carbon Series as the second model to dedicate its colour scheme to the iconic F1 homologation special.

McLaren 570S Spider 2017 UK first drive

Should I buy one?

The retractable hard-top makes choosing between roadster and coupé less complicated and unless you absolutely don’t like driving in the open air and are happy to spend almost £20,000 more, then the decision should be easy.

Of the three 570s, McLaren says the Spider will be the best seller, accounting for 50% sales, with the GT expected to make up 40% and the coupé just 10%.

The Spider handles the mixed surfaces of UK roads equally as well as its stablemate, making the prospect of using it daily a realistic proposition.

Despite the specification, the 570S Spider impresses far more in the flesh than on paper. It is a simply beautiful thing, imparting a real feeling of craftsmanship and quality. The engineering package is exceptional, with a perfect match between powertrain and chassis.

The most important thing, though, is this: it can be used whenever you want. It’s easy to reverse into a parking space, thanks to effective door mirrors. It can be benign or challenging to drive and there's generous stowage in the front boot, plus a little more under the tonneau hood makes it perfect for road trips. Should you buy one? Drive one and it will seduce you.

McLaren 570GT S Handling Pack unveiled

After the success of the 570S and 570GT, McLaren decided to combine the best of both

McLaren has announced a new S Handling Pack for its popular 570GT supercar.

The pack adds £4900 to the price of the £157,000 GT and comprises stiffer springs, quicker steering, new uprights and actuators, in addition to the more generous stability control settings from the 570S, as well as that car's steering and damper software.

The package is completed by the standard fitment of hybrid road/track Pirelli P Zero Corsa tyres in place of the usual P Zeroes.

Moreover, as part of the changes for the 2018 model year, 570GT cars now also come with carbon ceramic brakes as standard, bringing it into line with the 570S and other more expensive McLarens.

The move to sharpen the 570GT appears to be in response to criticism from some quarters that the car puts too great an emphasis on ride comfort in standard form, at the expense of outright body control. With springs that are 15% stiffer at the front, 10% stiffer at the rear and steering that’s 2% quicker overall, the hope is that the car will provide the looks and practicality that form the core of the 570GT’s appeal, together with the dynamic response that has earned the 570S near-universal praise.

And it looks like the pack will prove popular: McLaren estimates that 60% of 570GT customers will choose the S Handling Pack. As the 570GT already makes up 80% of 570 coupé sales, this means that almost half of all 570 coupés will be GTs with the pack. The 570 Spider already has S-specification settings as standard.

McLaren 570S Spider (2018) Review

Verdict

McLaren predicts that the Spider version will account for most of the 570S sales. That's probably why this junior supercar was designed from the ground up to be a Spider, rather than as an afterthought, which is often, but always, the case with mainstream manufacturers.

It feels every bit as good to drive as the hard top; having the raw soundtrack of the twin-turbo V8 piped into your ears while driving with the roof down is a major bonus.

The 570S Spider admittedly struggles to feel settled on less than optimal surfaces, where it can track and pull at the wheel as the surface dictates. Open it up on a smooth section of road, however and the McLaren comes to life with precision, agility and brutally fast acceleration that vividly separates it from humdrum sportscars.

What's more, the real trump card of the McLaren 570S Spider is it’s day-to-day usability. It’s comfortable to drive in town, easy to manoeuvre in parking lots and simple to get in and out of despite its low-slung seating arrangement. There are very few drawbacks to owning it, provided you can afford the R4.5-million (starting) price tag.

McLaren 570S Spider Track Pack 2018 UK review

Should I buy one?

McLaren expects a similar level of Track Pack uptake for the Spider as for the coupé – around one in every 10 orders.

Are you surprised it isn’t more? We are, a bit, so well does the pared-back, circuit-ready approach suit this particular Sports Series McLaren. Then again, the 570 – in the S guise seen here but especially so its more laid-back, prettier GT form – has a remarkable talent for touring that means many owners don’t treat them as an out-and-out performance car in the first place. For these men and women, the Track Pack will be unnecessary expense, and fair enough.

Specify it, however, and there exists no other car this exotic that can reward so richly when run ragged on track and then offer more placid but no less satisfying thrills while the evening sun streams into the cabin on the way home. The Lamborghini Huracán Performante Spider is simply too compromised and Lotus’s Exige Sport 410 a touch raw. Porsche is allegedly building a 911 Speedster with GT3 running gear, but good luck getting hold of one of those.

It means that with the 570S Spider Track Pack, McLaren has built the greatest utility supercar money can buy.
