McLaren 570S Design Editions - five spec-heavy special models on offer

More standard features and design combinations are available on five different versions of new trim level

The McLaren 570S can now be ordered in a choice of five Design Edition versions, which add colour combinations and trim packages picked by McLaren’s own designers to the Sports Series model.

The first Design Edition (pictured) applies a Vermillion Red paint job, five-spoke alloy wheels, a stealth exhaust and red brake calipers to the exterior. Inside, it gets black Alcantara and red Nappa leather upholstery with contrasting grey stitching, a colour co-ordinated steering wheel and a McLaren branded leather sill.

The other four Design Editions come in Onyx Black, Storm Grey, Ventura Orange and Silica White, and each offers their own colour and trim combinations.

No changes are made to the rest of the car, so Design Editions are still powered by the 570S’s turbocharged 3.8-litre V8 engine that produces 562bhp and 443lb ft of torque. Drive is sent to the rear wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, enabling a 3.2sec 0-62mph sprint and a 204mph top speed.

Pricing for each 570S Design Edition starts at £151,750, £8500 more than the regular car. McLaren says that the Design Edition’s long list of standard features actually makes it cheaper than a regular car with the same options added.

It’s not easy speccing a McLaren 570S, what with the seemingly endless combinations of colour, trim and finish (although, we must admits, it’s a nice problem to have).

So, the British automaker has revealed five exclusive Design Editions of its 570S, each painstakingly created by the people who should know McLaren’s array of personalisation options the best: the brand’s own designers.

Each edition incorporates the designers’ choice on exterior paint, wheel style and finish, exhaust style, and calliper colour, along with what the designers have decided is the “By McLaren” interior package that most complements the exterior.

Design Edition 1, for example, combines a Vermillion Red body with five-spoke wheels, “Stealth” exhaust and red brake callipers. Inside, this special 570S receives a “By McLaren” package of Carbon Black Alcantara and Apex Red Nappa leather seats, Jet Black Nappa leather upper facia, Apex Red Nappa leather lower facia, Slate Grey contrasting stitching, a dual colour co-ordinated steering wheel and a McLaren-branded leather sill finisher.

Interestingly, McLaren claims that ordering this sort of ready-made 570S “makes financial sense for the customer”. Previously, these items could only be specified separately, but each Design Edition actually works out significantly less expensive than if you were to spec your own.

As well as Vermillion Red, the other body colours of the five Design Editions are Onyx Black, Storm Grey, Ventura Orange and Silica White.

McLaren reveals 'Track Pack' option for 570S...

McLaren Automotive has announced a new, optional “Track Pack” for its 570S, which serves to cut weight and enhance aerodynamics.

The British automaker says the package is designed to “deliver enhanced levels of driver engagement for owners who enjoy occasional track day activity without compromising the car’s all-round usability”.

The package includes a “discretely extended” (12 mm higher) rear wing to generate an extra 29 kg of downforce at 240 km/h.

Other Track Pack visual clues include a McLaren Special Operations roof finish in Dark Palladium, and a stealth-finish Sports exhaust.

Ticking the Track Pack options box sees the McLaren 570S tip the scales at 25 kg less than the standard coupé, something made possible by a lightweight interior package. Here, Alcantara replaces leather for the seats, dashboard and steering wheel covering, while carbon-fibre racing seats are added. Further weight reductions include the Stealth-finish lightweight alloys.

In addition, the package includes a track telemetry system, something also found in the 675LT and P1. The system provides real-time information, such as lap times, sector splits and comparisons between drivers, as well as post-drive analysis and data-logging with graphical plots of vehicle speed and lap-time deltas.

McLaren says the Track Pack is available to order immediately, with the first deliveries beginning in early 2017. The price of this little option? Some £16 500 (around R288 000)…

Although it is by no means tardy, there’s no getting away from the fact that the 570S is one of McLaren’s slowest performance cars. But this is perhaps what prompted Italian tuner Novitec to go to work on the British supercar, giving it a handy bump in power as well as improving its handling.

Novitec has kept the twin-turbo 3,8-litre V8, but tuned it to deliver 475 kW and 692 N.m (up 56 kW and 92 N.m), which sees the 0-100 km/h time fall to 3,0 seconds and the top speed rise to 335 km/h. An enhanced exhaust system has also been added.

Along with a 30 mm drop in suspension, the Novitec front lip apparently helps to reduce the lift on the front axle to improve stability at high speeds. The rear airfoil, meanwhile, ostensibly improves cornering ability. Whether these updates will be as effective as the massive rear wing found on the soon-to-arrive 570S Sprint remains to be seen.

Other upgrades include a modest, wind-tunnel-developed aero kit and a set of high-performance forged alloy wheels. That sportier suspension setup and minor interior enhancements complete the package.

Novitec says these modifications can be purchased as a package or individually, although it has yet to reveal pricing. Don’t expect it to be any cheaper than McLaren’s in-house track pack, though…

McLaren passes major milestone with production of 10,000th car

Woking-based automotive arm has produced a Ceramic Grey McLaren 570S that will be retained in its Heritage Collection

McLaren Automotive has produced its 10,000th car five years after the brand’s first road model was produced.

The landmark model is a Ceramic Grey 570S that has been finished by McLaren Special Operations and will be retained in the car maker’s Heritage Collection.

The car is completely standard and therefore makes use of the same twin-turbocharged 3.8-litre V8 that’s featured in customer cars. It produces 562bhp and 443lb ft of torque, and can accelerate the car from 0-62mph in 3.2sec and onto a top speed of 204mph.

The 10,000th car comes less than two years after the marque surpassed 5000 cars, something it says illustrates the fast rate of progress it has made in recent months.

“Much of that development is thanks to the introduction of the Sports Series family of cars and it’s therefore fitting that the 10,000th car is a McLaren 570S,” said company CEO Mike Flewitt (pictured above).

The Woking car maker has ramped up build numbers following the introduction of a second shift at McLaren Production Centre, where all of its road models are produced. It has also increased its range, particularly in its Sport Series line-up, which is made up of the 540C, 570S and 570GT.

The automotive arm has made a profit for three years running, and expects its 2016 sales to amount to more than 3000 cars, close to double what it saw in 2015. 90% of its models are exported.

McLaren Automotive’s 10,000th car comes one month after Ron Dennis, the previous CEO of the McLaren Technology Group which is separate to the road car division, stood down following a disagreement with shareholders. The MTG is made up of McLaren’s applied technology, racing and marketing companies.

McLaren doubles car sales in 2016

McLaren posted growth of 99.3% last year, with a third consecutive year of profitability under its belt

McLaren’s car sales doubled in 2016 over 2015, with the supercar maker shifting 3286 cars in 2016, compared with 1654 in 2015.

In the same year that the car maker celebrated its 10,000th production car, McLaren sold more cars than it ever has.

McLaren expected to sell 3000 cars over the year, so exceeded its own expectation by almost 10%, with its Sports Series cars – including the 570GT and 570S models – driving the growth with 2031 sales over the year. The best-selling single model across the range was the 570S – also the cheapest model across the range.

The more expensive and powerful Super Series cars, which includes the 675LT Coupe and Spider, accounted for the remaining 1255 sales over 2016. McLaren is yet to confirm UK sales figures for 2016.

Mike Flewitt, chief executive officer of McLaren Automotive, said: “2016 was a remarkable year for McLaren Automotive. We’d planned it to be a year of considerable growth, thanks to the first full year of Sports Series production, but it’s surpassed even our own optimistic expectations.”

North America was McLaren’s largest market, and took around a third of all deliveries at 1139, while Europe took 996. All of McLaren Automotive’s areas of business grew, with Europe growing the most at 153% and North America growing by 106%. 228 cars were sold in China.

McLaren shows no signs of slowing its product offensive, as it prepares to launch the replacement for the 650S at the Geneva motor show in March. We’ve spotted this model testing multiple times. McLaren plans 15 new cars by 2022, comprising both derivatives and stand-alone models.

You''ll never guess how many cars McLaren sold in 2016

British supercar maker, McLaren, reported recorded another record year of sales growth with a near-doubling of its sales volume year-over-year, selling a total of 3286 cars in 2016 compared to 1654 in 2015.

In South Africa, McLaren's 'cheapest' car, the 540C, retails for R2 800 000. That should give you an indication of just how well the company has performed in 2016.

Phenomenal sales growth

The 99.3% improvement in sales performance also follows the company’s announcement of a third consecutive year of profitability in 2015 and the production milestone of the company’s 10 000th car, all capping another highly successful and record-breaking year.

Geographically, North America continued to be McLaren Automotive’s single largest market with deliveries of 1139 cars, a 106% increase over 2015.

Europe ended 2016 selling 996 cars in total, an increase of 153% whilst the rapidly-developing market in China sold 228 cars in total.

McLaren and BMW partner to develop new engine technology

The two car makers are collaborating to deliver higher output engines while reducing CO2 emissions

McLaren Automotive and BMW will develop new combustion technology together as part of a new collaboration announced today.

The technology is intended to deliver a higher output per capacity than is currently possible, according to McLaren. It added that it aims to help reduce CO2 while increasing engine output.

Both the British car maker and BMW confirmed that the technology is “destined for application in future [McLaren and BMW] engines”. McLaren told Autocar it expects the technology to be implemented in a McLaren engine by 2020.

The project also includes a number of other partners and is part-funded by the British Government through the Advanced Propulsion Centre.

To be led by McLaren Automotive, the project includes McLaren’s existing engine manufacturing partner Ricardo, BMW Group and Grainger and Worrall, which will deliver complex, lightweight casting technology. Other organisations involved include Lentus Composites, which focuses on specialist composite structures, and the University of Bath, which has “advanced research and development capabilities in internal combustion engine systems efficiency”, said McLaren.

The total cost of the project is £28m, including a £14m contribution by the Government. The remaining £14m is split among the project collaborators, but McLaren would not comment on individual contributions from each partner.

McLaren Automotive boss Mike Flewitt said: ”This is an exciting project that plays to the strengths of all partners. McLaren Automotive has an exceptional reputation for building the world’s finest engines, as showcased by our M838T and its previous category wins in the International Engine of the Year awards.

He continued: “We will continue to independently design and build our own engines, and the benefits of this project will help us accelerate the development of our next generation of powertrain, as confirmed in our recently announced Track22 business plan.”

A BMW spokesman added: “We are pleased to be part of this project, which plays to the strengths of all partners. McLaren Automotive and BMW Group have exceptional reputations for building the world’s finest engines. In the project, the partners will develop together new combustion technology.

“The further development of low CO2 combustion technology is important for the BMW Group as part of our Efficient Dynamics Strategy. The low CO2 combustion technology which will result from this joint project is destined for application in BMW Group engines in the future.”

The next step in McLaren’s Track 22 plan is the arrival of its 650S replacement at the Geneva motor show in March. An image of the supercar, codenamed P14, was leaked online last week.
