The next Renault Mégane Renault Sport will reach UK shores in 2018, and promises to be one of the hottest hatches on the market.

Talking to Autocar, VP of design Laurens van den Acker confirmed that the next hot Mégane will, like its Clio Renault Sport sibling, be available in five-door format only. With no three-door Mégane on the way, and no convertible planned either, customers will have just one body style to choose from.

It was also revealed by van den Acker that lap times are important in the development of the new Mégane RS, with the Renault designer ruling out the use of all-wheel drive because of this. There have also been suggestions that the Megane RS would feature a wider track over the standard car’s.

This means that Renault could be preparing the Mégane to reclaim its front-wheel-drive Nürburgring lap record from the Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport S, which set a time of 7min 49.21sec. The previous Mégane RS 275 Trophy’s record time of 7min 54sec was originally smashed by the 7min 50sec achieved by the Honda Civic Type R.

Despite the car’s practical five-door set-up and front-wheel drive, van der Acker is also confident that the Mégane RS would have more than 300bhp, which puts it firmly in the realm of the Honda. We expect this to be squeezed from a turbocharged 2.0-litre engine, as is the norm for cars of its type.

The current hot Mégane, the RS 275 Cup-S, reaches 62mph in 5.8sec and on to 158mph with ‘only’ 271bhp, so with 30bhp-plus on tap, there should be a comfortable improvement.

With the car still some two years away, Renault couldn’t give us any further details on what would feature on the Mégane RS. The four-wheel steering on the Mégane GT may be carried over to its sporting sibling along with the ‘RS vision’ lights, as seen on the facelifted Clio RS.

So far, the only details about the car’s timing Renault could reveal is that it’s coming some time in 2018. As with the facelifted Clio, we expect a small increase in price over the current Mégane RS, so a starting price of around £24,000 is likely.

2018 Renault Mégane RS to get 300bhp and EDC auto option

The 2018 Renault Mégane RS will produce more than 300bhp and be available in both manual and automatic guises.

The future hot hatch, spotted here testing under a Mégane GT body, will also get four-wheel steering and benefit from the larger platform of the latest Mégane, making it a contender to steal the Nürburgring front-wheel-drive lap record from current champion, the Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport S.

Under the bonnet of the hottest fourth-generation Mégane will be a turbocharged 2.0-litre engine. The unit will produce more than 300bhp, making it at least 29bhp more potent than the most powerful version of the old car’s engine.

It will drive the car’s front wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox, but a six-speed EDC dual-clutch automatic will almost certainly offered for the first time. While European markets are expected to prefer the manual, markets in Asia will likely have more demand more EDCs.

Due to the lower and longer five-door only platform of the new Mégane, which sits 25mm lower and is 28mm longer than the old car, plus the use of wider tracks, the next Mégane RS is expected to have significantly more mechanical grip.

The use of four-wheel steering will also help to make it more agile at speed while improving the car’s turning circle and enabling Renault Sport to make the steering more alert.

The hottest version of the outgoing Mégane RS, the 275 Cup S, reaches 62mph from rest in 5.8sec. Expect the next Mégane to trim several tenths off that sprint time, making it quicker than the Honda Civic Type R, which takes 5.7sec, and close to the four-wheel-drive Audi S3, which needs 5.2sec.

The car’s sporting design is expected to take influence from the details of the latest Clio RS. The test mule wears a cut-up version of the Mégane GT’s body, with only wheel arch add-ons and a centrally mounted twin-exit exhaust system giving away the true identity of what lies beneath.

Renault has remained tight-lipped about its next hot Mégane, but the brand has at least hinted that the car's arrival date will be some time in 2018. As with the facelifted Clio, expect a small increase in price over that of the current Mégane RS, so a starting price of around £24,000 is likely.

This significantly undercuts the Honda Civic Type R, which starts at £30,000, and ranks the Mégane RS above the less hardcore Ford Focus ST, which starts at £22,750.
