Tata Tiago Review - We drive one of SA's most affordable cars

In this video review David Taylor gets behind the wheel of one of South Africa's most affordable vehicles, the Tata Tiago. He assesses the engine performance, fuel efficiency, value for money, cabin space and features.

Dave also looks at what else you can buy for the money and tries to answer the important question of whether you buy an entry-level vehicle brand new, or go for a low-mileage, year-old demo model which offers more space, performance and features?

Anyone know where is Ciro? Have not seen a review from him in a while. Did they fire him at cars.co.za? He was basically the only reason to tolerate that YouTube channel.

Tata Motors has launched the heavily revised next-gen Tiago. The entry-level hatchback comes in a brand-new design and several advanced features. Prices start at Rs 4.69 lakh (ex-showroom).

The new Tiago gets a redesigned front fascia, a new bumper and sharper-looking LED headlamps with integrated LED DRLs and LED fog lamps. In the rear, the car gets slim, connected LED taillights, a reworked bumper, a roof spoiler and a shark-fin antenna.

The Tiago is now equipped with new 15-inch dual-tone alloy wheels.

Interior & features:

Tata designers have completely reworked the interior of the Tiago to give it a more modern and cleaner look. The car comes with a new 2-spoke steering wheel and a digital instrument cluster. It has a freestanding 10.25-inch touchscreen in the centre, redesigned AC vents and centre console.

The Tiago offers features like automatic climate control with rear AC vents, a 4-speaker sound system, a cooled glove box, and wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

It comes with several advanced safety features, including a 360-degree camera, cruise control, ESC, and ABS with EBD.

Engine & transmissions:

Powering the new Tiago is the same 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine as before. This unit produces 85 BHP and 113 Nm and is paired with either a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT.

The Tiago i-CNG uses the same 1.2-litre engine. It delivers 74 BHP in CNG mode and is available with both a 5-speed manual and AMT gearbox. The AMT version gets paddle shifters.

Colours:

The 2026 Tata Tiago is available in six colour options: Daytona Grey, Pangong Pulse, Pristine White, Pure Grey, Sobo Surge, and Varanasi Vibrance.

Tata Tiago CNG to get AMT option with paddle shifters - Team-BHP

Tata Motors has shared fresh details of the new-gen Tiago i-CNG. The latest video reveals a couple of segment-first features that will be offered in the CNG variant.

The Tiago i-CNG will feature Tata’s twin CNG cylinder tech, which uses two smaller cylinders instead of a single large one. The cylinders are integrated into the boot floor, leaving a relatively large usable luggage space.

But that’s not the highlight of the new Tiago i-CNG. The car will be offered with an automated manual transmission, which can be controlled via a new rotary drive mode selector. What’s more interesting is that the AMT gearbox comes with paddle shifters.

Besides a fresh exterior design, the new Tiago also features a brand-new cabin. It gets a new dashboard with a free-standing touchscreen in the centre, a fully digital instrument cluster and a 2-spoke steering wheel.

The car will be loaded with features such as automatic climate control with rear AC vents, a wireless charging pad, a front centre armrest and more.

The next-gen Tiago is expected to be mechanically unchanged. It will carry forward the same 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, paired with either a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT gearbox.

2026 Tata Tiago 'Facelift' Review - Team-BHP

Tata Tiago Pros

Smart looks matched to solid build quality. Many interesting colours available too
• Superbly priced for what it offers; undercuts its direct competitors
• Nice, modern interiors. Lots of storage and a useful 242-litre boot too
• Petrol and CNG powerplants offer good drivability. AMT available with both motors
• Suspension offers excellent ride comfort by segment standards, with neutral handling too
• Economy hatchback that's loaded with features such as keyless entry & go, cruise control, 10.25-inch touchscreen head-unit, paddle-shifters for the AMT variants, wireless charging, climate control, cooled glovebox, Android Auto & Apple CarPlay connectivity, connected car features, auto LED headlamps and tail-lamps, rain-sensing wipers and more
• Safety kit includes 6 airbags, ESP + ABS + EBD & CSC, 3-point seatbelts for all, ISOFIX child seat mounts, 360-degree camera, blind view monitor, hill hold, iTPMS, etc.

Tata Tiago Cons

• Mediocre 3-cylinder naturally-aspirated engine lags behind the competition. Slow by current standards, and the NVH is sub-par
• We feel that Tata should have offered the 1.2L turbo-charged motor in this all-new Tiago (it's already used in the Punch)
• AMT is jerky and slow to respond
• Poor fit & finish levels. There is no comparison to the Japanese and Korean competitors
• Rear seat is suitable for 2 adults, not 3
• Some missing / deleted features such as boot lamp (was there in the previous gen), glovebox illumination, tweeters, centre armrest for rear seat, driving modes (offered in the previous gen), full size spare wheel, etc.
• Tata's after-sales service quality is a hit or miss. Remains a gamble

2026 Tata Tiago.ev Review - Team-BHP

Tata Tiago.ev Pros

• Smart looks matched to solid build quality. Many interesting colours available too
• A well-rounded EV package at a 7-lakh rupee starting price (top variant is 9.99L). Total value-for-money
• Nice, modern interiors. Lots of storage and a useful 240-litre boot too
• Zero emissions, lower running costs, no gears, light controls and compact size make it an ideal city car
• Real-world range of ~200 km is adequate for city commutes & urban dwellers
• Peppy behaviour in "S" mode! "D" mode is rather tame though
• Sorted road manners due to the lower centre of gravity & firmer suspension
• Economy hatchback that's loaded with features such as keyless entry & go, cruise control, 10.25-inch touchscreen head-unit, adjustable regen, climate control, cooled glovebox, Android Auto & Apple CarPlay, connected car features, auto LED headlamps and tail-lamps, rain-sensing wipers, drive modes and more
• Safety kit includes 6 airbags, ESP + ABS + EBD & CSC, 3-point seatbelts for all, ISOFIX child seat mounts, i-High Beam Alert, 360-degree camera, blind view monitor, hill hold, TPMS, etc.
• Lifetime battery warranty on the 24 kWh variants
• BaaS (Battery as a Service) option is available

Tata Tiago.ev Cons

• A stiff 2-3 lakh rupees more expensive than the Tiago Petrol AMT
• ~200 km range means this is strictly a city car. No long highway runs
• Stiffer suspension than the regular Tiago means you feel more of the road. Bad roads are felt
• Power tapers off after 100 km/h; top speed of just 120 km/h
• No spare tyre, you'll have to make do with a puncture repair kit!! We suggest buying a spare at extra cost (note: car doesn't have a spare wheel well)
• Some misses such as "P" mode on the shifter, one-pedal driving, alloy wheels, wireless charging, tweeters, etc.
• Rear seat is suitable for 2 adults, not 3
• Poor fit & finish levels. There is no comparison to Japanese and Korean cars at similar price-points
• Tata's after-sales service quality is a hit or miss. Remains a gamble
• The usual EV challenges (charging infrastructure, highway range anxiety, etc.)
