ALFA ROMEO STELVIO QV BAGS ‘RING RECORD FOR SUVS!
Alfa Romeo says that its Stelvio Quadrifoglio has claimed the unofficial lap record for production SUVs at the Nürburgring.
The Italian brand says its Stelvio Quadrifoglio lapped the 20,8 km Nordschleife in a time of 7 minutes 51,7 seconds – a whopping eight seconds faster than the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S that held the previous record.
The man behind the wheel was Fabio Francia, the same driver who set the record for the fastest four-door sedan in the world on the Nürburgring with the Giulia Quadrifoglio (7 minutes 32 seconds).
Alfa puts the record down to the Stelvio Quadrifoglio’s “perfect” weight distribution, “segment-leading” torsional rigidity, “class-exclusive” carbon-fibre driveshaft and “the most direct steering available”.
Of course, the Ferrari-developed 2,9-litre twin-turbo V6 under the bonnet – again, shared with the Giulia QV – certainly helped too, delivering 375 kW and 600 N.m all four corners via an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The Alfa Romeo Quadrifoglio has set a new record at the famous Nurburgring to become the fastest production SUV to lap the ‘Green Hell’.
Alfa Romeo’s new Stelvio Quadrifoglio SUV is the fastest production SUV to set tread on the Nurburgring with a lap time of 7:51.7, relegating the previous record holder, the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S (7:59.74).
“We specifically engineered and designed the Stelvio Quadrifoglio to set world-class benchmarks and it did not disappoint with a world-record Nürburgring lap time of 7 minutes and 51.7 seconds,” said Reid Bigland, Head of Alfa Romeo. “We’re proud to now hold two Nürburgring lap time records with the Giulia Quadrifoglio as the fastest four-door production sedan and the Stelvio Quadrifoglio as the fastest production SUV.”
However, Alfa Romeo’s glory might not last very long because the Lamborghini Urus super-SUV will make its debut at the end of 2017 and it will surely have its day for a Nurburgring record attempt in 2018. Lamborghini is confident that the Urus will be the fastest SUV around the ring.
Lamborghini research and development chief Maurizio Reggiani recently commented, “Our SUV will achieve more than 300 kph, because it’s a Lamborghini. It’s our DNA. We will achieve the best lap time for an SUV on Nordschleife—this is a faster SUV”.
For now, the Stelvio Quadrifoglio can bask in its glory. The Stelvio Quadrifoglio is powered by a 2.9-litre twin-turbocharged V6 petrol engine that develops 377 kW and 600 Nm of torque via an 8-speed automatic transmission with power sent to all 4 corners. Alfa Romeo claims a zero to 100 kph sprint time of 3.9 seconds.
The Stelvio is due to arrive in South Africa early in 2018 and order books are open for interested customers. However, the Stelvio will only be offered with a 206 kW / 400 Nm 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine. The potent Stelvio Quadrifoglio has not been confirmed for our market, but we can only hope that it will be offered.

Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio on sale in summer 2018
Long-awaited sports SUV will rival similarly-pitched upcoming rivals like the Jaguar F-Pace SVR and BMW X3 M
Alfa Romeo has confirmed that its first sports SUV - the 503bhp, bi-turbo 2.9-litre V6-engined Stelvio Quadrifoglio, will go on sale in the summer of 2018, around 18 months after it was first shown to the public at the 2016 LA motor show.
No prices or spec details have been revealed ahead of the car's UK launch, but it's expected to cost upwards of £65,000. The Giulia Quadrifoglio is around £23,000 more expensive than the warm Veloce model, so it's expected that a similar price gap will sit between the standard Stelvio and the hot Quadrifoglio model.
The standard, non-Quadrifoglio Stelvio - the first mainstream Alfa Romeo SUV - is priced from £33,990 in entry-level trim; £740 less than the equivalent Jaguar F-Pace.
There are just two engines on sale initially; a 2.2-litre diesel with either 178bhp or 207bhp, with the latter available exclusively in all-wheel drive, or an all-wheel drive petrol with 197bhp or 276bhp. The entry-level engine is the lowest-powered diesel, in rear-wheel drive format.
Like the Giulia saloon, the Stelvio's lineup is divided into four distinct trim levels, separate from the more potent Quadrifoglio; standard 'Stelvio', 'Super', 'Speciale' and 'Milano Edizione'. The entry-level car gets 17in alloys, adaptive cruise control, an 8.8in infotainment system, automatic lights and wipers and two rear USB ports included in its equipment list, in addition to safety tech including automatic emergency braking and lane keep assist. It also undercuts its closest rival, the Jaguar F-Pace, by £740, the Mercedes-Benz GLC by £2435 and the Audi Q5 by £4045, making it one of the cheapest premium small SUVs in the segment.
Topping out the cooking Stelvio range is the 276bhp petrol-engined Milano Edizione, which at £45,390 adds electrically adjustable full leather sports seats, reversing camera, 20in alloys and keyless entry to the Speciale trim, as well as an upgraded speaker system with 10 speakers and a subwoofer. This version hits 62mph from zero in 5.7sec; 0.3sec off the pace of the Audi SQ5.

The last we spoke about the hotted up version of the Stelvio SUV was to let you all know that it is currently the king of the ‘ring in the SUV battle and now it has officially gone on sale.
Thanks to the 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6, this crossover packs a 510 horsepower punch capable of throwing it to 100 km/h in just 3.8 seconds and topping out at 285 km/h.
The order books for the Italian S(UV)tallion opened today (in certain markets) so we reached out to a local dealer to get some indicative pricing and estimated arrival of the beefy crossover in South Africa.
Unfortunately no official pricing is available as of yet but we can expect it to be somewhere in the R1.4 to R1.5 million range with arrival in South Africa estimated to be at the end of the 2nd quarter of 2018.

Of course, the Stelvio Quadrifoglio recently grabbed the unofficial lap record for production SUVs at the Nürburgring, but now the Italian automaker has lifted the veil on a few of its vital statistics.
As we already new, the hottest Stelvio is powered by the same Ferrari-developed 2,9-litre V6 bi-turbo petrol engine used by the Giulia Quadrifoglio, and at 375 kW and 600 N.m its peak outputs are unchanged.
But since this considerable oomph is sent to all four corners (again, via an eight-speed automatic transmission) rather than just the rear rubber, Alfa says the Stelvio Quadrifoglio is actually quicker from standstill to 100 km/h than the rear-wheel-drive Giulia, taking a claimed 3,8 seconds (one-tenth quicker than the Giulia) to complete the obligatory sprint. This despite the fact that the SUV is heavier than the sedan, with a claimed kerb weight of 1 830 kg.
And the top speed of the Stelvio Quadrifoglio? Well, Alfa claims a “best-in-class” 283 km/h…
The brand’s “Q4” all-wheel-drive system sends all of the torque to the rear axle in normal driving situations, but as the tyres approach their grip limit, the system can transmit up to half of the torque to the front axle.

Alfa Romeo's first SUV: New luxury Stelvio arrives in SA
Alfa Romeo’s first utlity vehicle has arrived in South Africa and the automaker aims to upset the local medium-sized, premium SUV market.
Why the Stelvio moniker? The name is derived from the iconic Stelvio Pass; Italy's highest mountain pass and Highway 38, which crosses it, over 20km in length and with more than 75 hairpin bends.
The Stelvio offers the Alfa Romeo Q4 all-wheel drive system, and can be optionally equipped with mechanical locking rear differential. The new SUV measures 4.7m long, 1.7 tall and 2.2 wide.
At the time of launch, the Stelvio will be available in 'Super' guise as well as the limited First Edition with the choice of eleven body colours and three alloy wheels (from 18" to 20"). More on the range, including prices, at the end of this article.
Power
The SUV is powered by a 4-cylinder unit 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol capable of 206kW/400Nm, mated to a 8-speed automatic transmission. The Stelvio, says Alfa, features best-in-class acceleration - 0 to 100km/h in just 5.7 seconds, with a top speed of 230 km/h.
The Stelvio features the new Alfa DNA selector, which modifies the car's dynamic behaviour as selected by the driver: Dynamic, Natural and Advanced Efficiency.
Inside, it have a high level of on-board comfort with the dual-zone climate control, the sophisticated Alfa Connect infotainment system and a fine audio system, with 8, 10 or 14 speakers (in this case by Harman Kardon) depending on version. It has 525 litres of boot space which, says Alfa Romeo, competes with the best in the segment, and has an electronic tailgate.
Stelvio features a number of safety systems, available as standard. Key amongst them is the Integrated Brake System (IBS), Forward Collision Warning and Autonomous Emergency Brake with pedestrian detection, Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) with Rear Cross-Path Detection and Active Cruise Control.
The Super guise offers leather seats available in three colours (black, brown and red), a perfect combination with the dashboard and door panel options. This version can also be equipped with luxury seats upholstered in choice full grain leather (in black, brown or red), sill with metal inserts and two different steering wheels; luxury with superior leather and sports with specific grip and leather wrapping.
Alfa UConnect 3D Nav
Alfa Romeo Stelvio is equipped with the ground-breaking Alfa Connect system – developed in partnership with Magneti Marelli – with a sophisticated set of features, especially the latest-generation HMI interface, with the system controlled from the Rotary Pad and the 8.8”display incorporated in the dashboard design. With a class-leading voice recognition system, the device allows full connectivity with all mobile devices (with Apple iOS and Android operating systems).
The Stelvio Super is equipped as standard with a sophisticated audio system with 8 speakers (4 woofers and 4 tweeters) and the First Edition is equipped with 10 speakers (4 woofers, 4 tweeters, a mid-range and a subwoofer in the boot). The optional Harman Kardon system, features 14 speakers (4 woofers, 4 tweeters, 5 mid-range and a subwoofer).
The range
The Super version features 18" alloy wheels, leather seats in three colours (black, brown and red), and complimentary colours for the dashboard and door panels and sill with steel insert. The Stelvio Super can also be ordered with the optional Luxury Pack which includes seats with electrical adjustment and heating, as well as real wood inserts and aluminium inserts and steel pedal trims.
The First Edition features all the standard equipment of the Super, with the addition of 20” alloy wheels, full grain leather upholstery, 10 speaker sound system, Active Cruise Control (ACC), Blind Spot Monitoring electric sunroof and numerous other customer benefits.
Prices starts from R810 000 for the Super and the First Edition is priced at R946 000.
The new Alfa Romeo Stelvio range is sold with a 3 year or 100 000km Warranty and a 6 year or 100 000km Maintenance plan as standard.

The high-performance Stelvio Quadrifoglio flagship, meanwhile, is scheduled to be launched locally in the third quarter of 2018.

The Q4 all-wheel drive system monitors various parameters to optimise torque distribution between the front and rear axles. In normal driving conditions, 100% torque is sent to the rear axle and as the wheels reach their grip limit, the Stelvio will automatically transfer 50% of the torque to the front axle to ensure maximum traction.

Call it sacrilegious if you will, but SUVs have become cash cows for carmakers and even sporting marques like Alfa Romeo have not resisted the temptation to jump on the bandwagon.
The Stelvio is Alfa Romeo’s first-ever SUV and it’s now available in South Africa, priced from R810 000.
Measuring 4.7 metres in length and 2.2m in width, the Stelvio is slightly larger than a BMW X4 and certainly leans towards the sportier side of the SUV market, and that extends to far more than just the styling.
Based on the Giulia sports sedan, the Stelvio makes generous use of lightweight materials, with many body components hewn from aluminium and plenty of smaller beneath the skin details such as the carbon fibre drive shaft.
It also comes standard with a rear-biased all-wheel-drive system that propels the rear wheels under normal driving conditions, only roping in the front wheels when extra traction is needed and even then only half of the torque can be sent up front. Also helping it slice through the bends is a sophisticated double wishbone suspension system and Alfa claims that the Stelvio’s steering ratio is the most direct in the segment.
For now all local Stelvio models will be powered by Alfa Romeo’s 2-litre direct injection turbopetrol engine, in this guise kicking out 206kW and 400Nm, and it's mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox with alloy paddle shifters.
