Should I buy one?

You’re unlikely to find an SUV that’s better fun to drive – and just so generally amusing to be around – than this. On the move it has the ability to make a Porsche Macan Turbo seem po-faced and at the kerbside it makes a BMW X5M look like a tragic try-hard.

Were it not so dynamically adept you might see those bonnet vents and mark the Stelvio QV down as some sort of caricature or parody - and yet the Stelvio QV handles with a fizz you would never associate with such a heavy beast. Moreover, in this country its combination of agility and security will hold huge appeal. An upcoming twin-test with the Macan will be a fascinating contest.

The question you really need to ask yourself is how desperately you need the extra ride-height, because however broad your smile becomes at the wheel of this hottest Stelvio, you’re bound to wonder how much broader it might have been in the sensational Giulia.

The 2.0T Super Q4 retails for R805 000, which includes a 3-year/100 000 km and a very competitive 6-year/100 000 km maintenance plan. Apart from the usual array of airbags and integral braking and stability assistance systems, standard safety equipment on the Alfa Romeo includes forward collision warning, autonomous emergency brake, lane departure warning and hill descent control.

There are notable extra cost options, such as self-dimming interior mirror, electric (and heated) front seats, full-grain leather, sports steering wheel with shift paddles, panoramic sunroof, blind spot assist and active cruise control and either a Sound Theatre- or Sound by Harman/Kardon Pack. Oh yes, and roof rails.

Verdict

There is much to like about the Stelvio 2.0T Super Q4. It might sound as if we’re damning Alfa Romeo’s admirable contribution to the Executive SUV segment with faint praise, but its design, packaging and – most notably – execution renders it a conventional rival, as opposed to a left-field alternative, to the volume sellers in the market. From the way it looks, feels and drives, to its benchmark 6-year/100 000 km maintenance plan, the Italian compares favourably with its peers.

Alfa Romeo Has Recalled Thousands Of 2018 Stelvios Over Water Leaks

Alfa Romeos are known, chiefly, for their reliability. So it’s unfortunate that, in recent weeks, Alfa Romeo was forced to issue two recalls affecting thousands of Stelvios.

One recall addresses the lift-gate, which may pop open unexpectedly; the other has to do with corrosion that may cause windshield wipers and head lamps to stop working.

Let’s start with the lift-gate, described here in a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration document, which says that 12,595 Stelvios are affected:

"Certain 2018 MY Alfa Romeo Stelvio vehicles built from March 20, 2017, through February 14, 2018, may experience water intrusion and subsequent corrosion in wiring connectors in the rear lift-gate wiring harness and the lift-gate-opening switches."

"Similar vehicles not included in the recall were built after February 14, 2018 and utilise an ergonomically improved application process for the sealant, protective tape and shrink tube to seal water leak paths and provide additional protection to affected connectors."

"An unintended activation and opening of the rear lift-gate door may result in a loss of unrestrained cargo. Lost cargo may create a road hazard and could cause a following vehicle to crash without prior warning."

Alfa first learned of the potential issue in January after a warranty claim, confirming it a couple months later and finally determining that it needed to issue the recall on March 23.

The second recall is somewhat similar, and affects the same number of Stelvios, though this leak is at the other end of the car:

"Certain 2018 MY Alfa Romeo Stelvio vehicles built from March 20, 2017, through February 14, 2018, may experience water intrusion and subsequent corrosion in the body control module A-pillar connector and/or the body control module."

"Similar vehicles not included in the recall were built after February 14, 2018 and contain additional body sealer, an improved gasket crimping process, additional shielding to the body control module and sealing tape between the plenum and body sheet metal to prevent water intrusion onto the A-pillar connector and body control module."

"In certain conditions, loss of windshield wiper function and/or exterior lighting may reduce driver visibility and could result in a vehicle crash without warning."

The NHTSA documents indicate that Alfa had known about this problem for significantly longer than the first, hearing of it originally in September as part of a warranty claim.

Months of testing ensued, and, by late March, Alfa determined it needed a recall for this leak as well. That timing isn’t necessarily problematic, since recalls are expensive and automakers like to be certain there’s a problem before sounding the siren. Still!

What percentage of Stelvios are affected in total?

Well, according to goodcarbadcar, Alfa has sold somewhere approaching that number of Stelvios in the U.S. in total, meaning that if 12,595 isn’t every Stelvio on the streets of America, it’s pretty close.

The recalls are the third and fourth recalls for the 2018 Stelvio, after much smaller recalls in January and March.

The current record holder for SUV’s around the Nurburgring is scheduled to arrive on our shores around August we have the local pricing.

The Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio packs the exclusive aluminium 2.9-litre V6 Biturbo petrol engine, developed with inputs from Ferrari technologies and engineering know-how, which delivers a maximum power of 503 hp(375 kW) and generates a maximum torque of 600 Nm.

This power plant is teamed with the specifically calibrated eight-speed automatic transmission that allows gear shifts in just 150 milliseconds in Race driving mode.

Moreover, to maximise the driving experience, the model is equipped as standard with one-piece aluminium paddle shifters integral with the steering column. Its performance is outstanding with acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h claimed to just be 3.8 seconds* and best-in-class top speed of 283 km/h.
