Audi's facelifted A3 is being launched in South Africa this week, sporting a redesigned face and a brand new range of engines, while fans of Audi's Virtual Cockpit will be pleased to know that this option is now available in the A3.

All change under the bonnet

The bottom end of the range embraces the downsizing trend with the previous 1.2-litre four-cylinder TFSI turbopetrol making way for a new 1-litre, three-cylinder TFSI unit. The new motor produces 85kW and 200Nm, up 8kW and 25Nm on the 1.2 and according to Audi the new derivative will accelerate from 0-100km/h in 9.7 seconds.

Next up is a more powerful 1.4-litre TFSI featuring fuel-saving cylinder-on-demand technology and pushing 110kW and 250Nm (up 18kW and 50Nm on the previous 1.4). There's a bit of upsizing going on further up in the range, where the 132kW/250Nm 1.8 TFSI makes way for Audi's new 140kW/320Nm 2-litre unit, first seen in the new-generation A4. This one will take you to 100 in a claimed 6.7 seconds, versus 8.1s in the case of the 1.4.

But the most potent of all is the new S3, good for a 4.5s sprint thanks to its more powerful 2-litre TFSI that produces 228kW and 400Nm, up 22kW and 20Nm. As before it is fitted with a seven-speed S-Tronic dual-clutch gearbox and Quattro all-wheel drive.

The range continues to cater for diesel-heads too, with a 105kW/340Nm 2.0 TDI, which loses 5kW to its predecessor, but gains 20Nm. Audi's seven-speed S-Tronic, optional in the 1.0, 1.4 and 2.0 petrol models, is standard on the diesel.

Subtle facelift

The external design changes to the A3 are somewhat less radical than those beneath the bonnet, but the new frontal design is rather distinct with its jagged-edged headlights and new grille design. Bi-xenon headlights are part of the deal, but buyers can opt for LED or Matrix LED lights, both featuring Audi's so-called dynamic turn signals. Design changes at the back end are limited to new taillights and a reshaped diffuser.

Changes to the A3's gorgeous interior are limited, although the trendy Virtual Cockpit digital instrument cluster, offering two different view themes, joins the range as an option. Furthermore, buyers can now choose between two versions of the optional MMI Navigation system, with Audi offering what it calls a more 'basic' version and a more advanced variant. Also available among the 'Audi Connect' features are Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Google Street View.

Standard features

A3 range: 16-inch alloy wheels (17" wheels on Cabrio), Bi-xenon headlights, MMI radio plus with 18cm screen and Bluetooth connectivity, cruise control, auto lights and windscreen wipers and a leather-covered sports steering wheel.

S3 range: 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights and taillights, sports suspension, partial leather seat trim (sports seat design up front), flat-bottomed multi-function steering wheel, MMI radio plus and automatic climate control.

As before, the A3 and S3 line-up is available in three-door and five-door hatchback, four-door sedan and cabriolet body styles.

Facelifted Audi A3 arrives in SA: pricing and details

The facelifted Audi A3 range has been launched in South Africa, combining fresh technology, new engines and subtly updated styling.

As before, the updated A3 is available as a three-door hatchback, five-door Sportback, sedan and cabriolet. Refreshed versions of the S3 are also on offer, while the RS3 Sedan and RS3 Sportback will be added to the local range in 2017.

Besides the updated styling – which includes the likes of new headlight and taillight designs, a fresh front bumper, a redesigned grille and a reshaped rear diffuser – the latest A3 is also now available with LED and Matrix LED headlights, which offer nifty dynamic turn signals.

The new engine range includes five powerplants, with outputs ranging from 85 kW to 228 kW.

New to the line-up is the 1,0 TFSI, the first three-cylinder engine to be offered in the Audi A3 range. This little mill makes 85 kW and 200 N.m, with Audi claiming a consumption figure of 4,5 L/100 km. It propels the front-wheel-drive A3 from zero to 100 km/h in a claimed 9,7 seconds.

Then there’s the new 1,4 TFSI engine, which boasts cylinder-on-demand technology, switching off two cylinders when extra power is not required. Outputs stand at 110 kW and 250 N.m, with claimed consumption mirroring that of the 1,0-litre mill.

Meanwhile, a newly developed 2,0 TFSI is worth 140 kW and 320 N.m. The sprint to three figures takes a claimed 6,7 seconds, before puff runs out at 244 km/h. This engine is mated to a new seven-speed (wet) dual-clutch transmission.

A 2,0-litre four-cylinder TDI engine making 105 kW and 340 N.m will also be offered, married exclusively to the S tronic transmission. Again, claimed fuel consumption comes in at 4,5 L/100 km.

The S3, meanwhile, now has an additional 18 kW and 20 N.m for a total of 228 kW and 400 N.m. Mated to the new seven-speed transmission, claimed consumption falls to 6,4 L/100 km. The dash to three figures takes 4,5 seconds in the hatch, 4,6 seconds in the Sportback and the Sedan, and 5,1 seconds in the cabriolet.

Inside, Audi’s nifty Virtual Cockpit can now be optionally specified, which adds a 12,3-inch TFT screen to the equation.

Those prices. Wow. I shudder to think what a fully kitted A3 would cost.

Standard spec is fairly healthy...

The facelifted Audi A3 is launching in South Africa today! Take a look at specification and pricing for the refreshed A3 range...
The Audi A3 is the Ingolstadt-based firm’s most popular model in South Africa and following the new model's introduction in 2013, the car has received a number of technology, engine and styling updates. Let's take a look at what you can expect from the refreshed premium hatchback.

The facelifted A3 is available as a three-door hatchback, five-door Sportback, Sedan or Cabriolet. There are turbopetrol and turbodiesel engines on offer and you can opt for either a manual or an S-tronic transmission. The performance-orientated Audi RS3 Sportback and RS3 sedan will be introduced locally in 2017.

Exterior changes
The appearance of the A3 has changed somewhat and the most noticeable revisions are the redesigned headlights and taillights. Xenon-plus headlights are fitted as standard across the range, while LED headlights and Matrix LED headlights are optional. Meanwhile, the grille has been broadened and features sharpened contours, giving the facelifted A3 a more refined appearance and the rear diffuser has also been revised. A total of 12 exterior finish colours are available, of which 5 hues are new: Ara Blue, Cosmic Blue, Nano Gray, Tango Red and Vegas Yellow.

Sixteen-inch wheels as standard and Design or Sport derivatives will be fitted with 17-inch examples. New wheel designs will also be available on the optional 18 and 19-inch wheels.

Interior changes
The now familiar Audi Virtual Cockpit can be specified on the facelifted A3; it transforms the instrument clusters into a 12.3-inch diagonal TFT screen. The 7-inch MMI radio plus will be fitted as standard while MMI navigation and MMI navigation plus with MMI touch are optional.

In terms of safety technology, active lane assist, and Audi pre sense (with predictive pedestrian protection) can be specified. The optional traffic jam assist will also makes its way into the A3 and works in conjunction with the adaptive cruise control and Stop&Go feature to manage the distance between the vehicle and traffic up ahead at speeds up to 65 kph. The A3 will also benefit from Emergency Assist, which will bring the Audi to a stop if no steering activity is detected. Furthermore, rear cross-traffic assist will warn the driver if cars are approaching while reversing out of a parking bay.

Engine Choice
A total of 5 engine choices are available to buyers, including three petrol and one diesel engine. The A3 range will be powered by a 3-cylinder 1.0-litre turbopetrol engine for the first time, offering outputs of 85 kW and 200 Nm of torque. Fuel consumption for this engine is rated at 4.5 L/100 km.

A new cylinder-on-demand (COD) 1.4-litre turbopetrol engine is also on offer with 110 kW and 250 Nm of torque with a claimed fuel consumption figure of 4.5 L/100 km when mated to a 6-speed manual transmission.

If you want more power, you may want to consider the newly developed 2.0-litre turbopetrol engine with 140 kW and 320 Nm of torque on tap. This engine is mated to an all-new 7-speed dual-clutch transmission and returns a claimed fuel consumption figure of 5.5 L/100 km. In the S3, this same engine has received a power upgrade with outputs of 228 kW and 400 Nm of torque. Claimed fuel consumption for the S3 is rated at 6.4 L/100 km.

The only diesel engine in the A3 range is the 2.0 turbodiesel engine with 105 kW and 340 Nm and it's mated to an S tronic transmission with a claimed fuel consumption figure of 4.5 L/100 km.
