2017 Audi A3 range (8V Facelift)

Audi A3 three-door and Volkswagen Scirocco axed in UK

Three-door hatchbacks at the Volkswagen Group are in the firing line as sales of the Audi A3 and Volkswagen Scirocco end

Order books have now closed for three-door versions of the Audi A3, as the motor industry moves away from three-door hatchbacks. Construction of the Volkswagen Scirocco has also ended.

This means that the A3 variants now available are the Sportback, Convertible and Saloon. Orders have closed for the three-door, but the current cars on order mean that the A3 three-door will officially exit production in November.

The Volkswagen Group, as well as the wider industry, is abandoning sportier three-door hatchbacks in favour of quicker-selling five-door variants, favoured by buyers for their increased practicality and resale prospects. The Scirocco’s demise was previously hinted at by VW Group executives, as was the Beetle hardtop's, although this model remains.

The A3 was one of only a few three-door hatchbacks left in the VW Group stable, leaving just the three-door Volkswagen Golf, the Seat Leon SC, the Volkswagen Beetle and the Volkswagen Up, Skoda Citigo and Seat Mii city cars.

A more rakish liftback variant is slated to replace the three-door A3 in the car’s next generation, which will hit the road in 2019. No replacement is yet in the pipeline for the Scirocco, although an eventual hot electric ID hatchback is likely to indirectly fill the gap.

Official word is that the T-Roc small SUV is likely to absorb some of the Scirocco’s sales and that, unofficially, a hot T-Roc R variant will indirectly replace the Scirocco R.

The only Sciroccos now available are the remaining UK stock, numbering only a few hundred.

3 Reasons Why Audi A3 is #CarsAwards Finalist

What makes the Audi A3 2.0T FSI Sportback S Line automatic a strong contender in the Premium Hatchback category of the 2017/18 Cars.co.za Consumer Awards – powered by WesBank? We investigate…

The Audi A3 2.0T FSI Sportback in S Line guise offers attractive styling and performance ability while blending luxury, comfort and refinement in a compact premium hatchback package. This A3 derivative therefore makes a strong case for itself in the Premium Hatchback category of the #CarsAwards.

3 Reasons Why Audi A3 2.0T FSI Sportback S Line Auto is a #CarsAwards finalist

1. Refined performer

This A3 Sportback derivative is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-litre engine and mated with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. With outputs of 140 kW and 320 Nm, this Audi A3 certainly has a performance bent to it and can sprint from zero to 100 kph in 6.8 seconds.

With the car set in comfort driving mode, shifts are geared towards fuel efficiency with Audi claiming a fuel consumption figure of 5.7 L/100km. This A3 offers a good balance between performance and economy.

2. Smart infotainment system

The A3 Sportback is fitted with a dashboard-mounted infotainment system that, at the push of a button, disappears gracefully into the dashboard. The system is easily controlled using the MMI rotary dial in the centre console. The system offers Bluetooth and USB/Aux support. Navigation is offered as an option as is Audi’s Virtual Cockpit and Bang and Olufsen sound system - all features worth the additional spend.

3. Handling ability and safety

The A3 Sportback offers excellent handling ability and with the standard chassis, it delivers a composed and comfortable ride, but with a dynamic feel.

It’s also fitted with comprehensive safety features including 7 airbags, ABS with EBD, brake assist and stability control with traction control as standard. A number of additional safety features are also optionally available.

Audi A3 Sportback Black Edition 1.5 TFSI 150 S tronic

Should I buy one?

Audi spends millions on quality, setting panel gaps with tenth of a millimetre accuracy, scrutinising the clicking sound an air vent makes when you close it and it even has a laboratory which focuses on the smell of each individual material. That detail isn’t obvious but the all-pervading feeling of quality when you step into any Audi model is.

The A3 Sportback is no exception, with an immaculately finished interior and wide range of driver assistance features, crisp handling and that smooth, 1.5 TFSI engine. If you want a practical family car with a little more room than a standard hatch offers, five doors and crisp handling and steering, the flagship Sportback could be it, as long as your budget can stretch to it.

What pushed the price that high? Extras? That's what a 2.0 TFSI Quattro goes for.

Above mentioned is my next car for sure.
