2017 Jeep Compass (2nd Generation)

Yup, so why would people go for the compass with its 2.4 petrol engine and a smaller cabin.

Few factors:

- New vs Used
- All new vehicle vs old GC design
- Smaller size vs bigger, some folks don't want something that big
- Petrol vs Diesel, not everyone prefers Diesel but most do. There will be a group that likes a robust N/A Petrol motor.

True, but I have heard the 3.6 Pentastar Engine in the GC is quite good too.
But the Compass looks exactly like a GC, no one will notice.

Jeep Compass 2.4 4x4 Trailhawk (2019) Review

Fast Facts

Price: R599 990
Engine: 2.4L petrol
Power/Torque: 129 kW/229 Nm
Transmission: 9-speed automatic
Fuel economy: 9.5 L/100 km (claimed)
Load capacity: 438 litres

Pricing & warranty

As of December 2019, the 2.4 4x4 Trailhawk is the only Compass on sale in SA, but other derivatives are expected to arrive in 2020. It costs R599 990 and comes with a 3-year/100 000 km warranty and service plan.

Verdict

The Compass 2.4 4x4 Trailhawk carves out its niche particularly well. There aren’t many true off-roaders at this end of the market that are as refined on- or off-road as Jeep's newcomer. It’s generously equipped, with modern connectivity and comfort features and offers high safety levels. Passengers will undoubtedly enjoy the SUV's ride comfort and generous occupant space, although the smallish load bay may put off some buyers if they're on the proverbial fence.

At its current price, the Jeep's unlikely to be a volume seller, as most buyers that really want to go off-road will opt for the peace of mind that’s offered by bakkie-based adventure SUVs, especially the Toyota Fortuner 2.4GD-6 4x4 auto. While this version of the Compass is a very good off-roader and certainly a much better car on-road than the Fortuner, conservative and brand-conscious buyers are likely to invariably favour the Japanese model.

Only seen 1 (one) on the roads of Cape Town in many months. With a single model going for R600k & very poor marketing by FCA SA I'm *not* surprised.

ROAD TEST: Jeep Compass 2,4 4x4 Trailhawk

TEST SUMMARY

Does the Jeep brand possess the allure it once had? This question kept coming up in the CAR team’s discussions on the Compass. While a new Wrangler performs wonders for the brand’s cachet, there’s little else in the current line-up to excite. The Grand Cherokee is old, likewise the Cherokee (why has the much prettier facelifted version not been launched?). Only the ageing Renegade still draws a small but consistent group of buyers each month.

We debated that initial question when we tried to establish rivals for the Compass. Should it be compared with the likes of the Volvo XC40, BMW X1 and Audi Q3 (challengers that don’t all offer comparable four-wheel-drive options)? It’s certainly not to the standard of the former group should your measure include driving dynamics and perceived quality, although the Jeep is better specced than its European rivals. Nor can it compete with the RAV4 and CX-5 for practicality. So, although the new Compass is a vast improvement, our assessment of that first-generation model rings true for this latest one, too. In a market stuffed to the gills with talent, the Jeep’s flaws are once again simply too numerous and obvious to ignore.

Jeep Compass

The new Jeep Compass is now manufactured in Italy, allowing Jeep to guarantee an average delivery time from the factory of approximately three weeks, while offering a variety of advanced user-friendly technologies that ensure a more efficient, comfortable and connected everyday driving experience.

The growing success of the model, initially produced for Europe at FCA Toluca plant in Mexico, made it possible to bring production, including that of the new 4xe version featuring plug-in hybrid electric technology, directly to Italy. This marks a further step in the implementation of FCA's 5 billion Euro investment plan for Italy, and in the brand's continuous evolution, while also highlighting both the technological innovation and excellence of the Italian factory, one of the most innovative in the world.

The Jeep Compass produced at the FCA Melfi Plant will be powered by a new 1.3-litre petrol engine delivering 130 hp or 150 hp, ensuring customers a smooth and comfortable driving experience, or alternatively by an updated version of the 120 hp 1.6-litre MultiJet II diesel engine with SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction). New features include the new Uconnect Services for improved onboard and off-board connectivity, new styling cues such as six different wheel designs (one specific for each trim and exclusive 19-inch Gloss Black wheels for the Night Eagle model) and a new color palette with five new exterior paints: Ivory Tri-Coat, Colorado Red, Blue Italia, Blue Shade and Techno Green Metallic - all of which can be offered in combination with a black roof. The new tonneau cover is also available on all versions.

Jeep updates Compass with new engine, gearbox and tech

New 1.3 turbo petrol boosts efficiency, with dual-clutch gearbox, chassis tweaks and connectivity improvements also brought in

Jeep has given its Compass SUV a series of upgrades for its 2020 model year, including the introduction of a new 1.3-litre turbo petrol engine.

The new unit, which made its debut on the Fiat 500X crossover, is available in 128bhp form with a six-speed manual gearbox and 148bhp form with a new six-speed dual-clutch automatic. Both units put out 30lb ft more torque than the 1.4 petrol they replace.

Both are also front-wheel drive only, whereas the previous Compass was offered in just 4x4 form with an automatic ’box. Jeep claims a 27% reduction in CO2 emissions and a 30% improvement in fuel economy compared with the old 1.4-litre 4x4 auto models.

Jeep Compass 4xe

The evolution of the Jeep® brand fully reflects its core values of freedom, adventure, authenticity and passion, the pillars of its reputation worldwide. The most recent step of Jeep 's evolutionary journey was taken into the world of electrification. This was done through different stages that paced the brand's approach to a plug-in hybrid propulsion solution capable of enhancing the legendary off-road capability of its line-up of SUVs.

As a brand, Jeep has always pioneered new segments and new technologies. Its legend started in 1941 with the Willys-Overland, the first ever mass-produced 4x4 vehicle and continued in 1949 with the launch of the four-wheel-drive Willys Wagon, which created the Sport Utility Vehicle.

Its world-renowned off-road capability has lasted ever since. Comfort, handling and connectivity have been increased over time, in parallel with the all-terrain performance of Jeep SUVs . Now, the Jeep brand is taking another major evolutionary step towards respecting the environment and reducing the total cost of ownership by introducing the new Renegade 4xe and Compass 4xe plug-in hybrid electric vehicles.

A no-compromise hybrid solution, which integrates the unmatched technical content of each Jeep SUV, will power both the Jeep Renegade 4xe and Jeep Compass 4xe and turn them into vehicles that provide absolute freedom while taking their capability to the next level through some of the most advanced eco-friendly technology. It is 'The Jeep way' to electrification.

Pricing! Jeep Compass range in SA expands with fresh 1,4T variants

Jeep South Africa has quietly expanded its Compass range, adding a pair of front-driven 1,4T variants to its local line-up.

When the second-generation Compass arrived in South Africa late in 2018, the range comprised just a single derivative: the Compass Trailhawk, powered by a naturally aspirated 2,4-litre, four-cylinder “Tigershark” petrol engine sending 129 kW and 229 N.m to all four corners via a nine-speed automatic transmission.

Now, however, the Michigan-based firm’s local arm has rolled out fresh Compass 1,4T Limited and Compass 1,4T Longitude variants, effectively lowering the entry point of the range.

Thanks to our studious friends over at duoporta.com, we know the 1,4T Limited is priced from R468 729 and the 1,4T Longitude from R472 529 (as opposed to R604 705 for the flagship 2,4 Trailhawk 4x4).

Updated Jeep Compass Shown in China

Jeep will be showcasing an updated Compass at the Guangzhou Auto Show in China this week. See what’s changed below…

The styling changes to the latest Jeep Compass are quite subtle and you might need to put your spectacles on spot the changes. The front bumper and grille have been revised and slimmer LED headlights have also been fitted, giving the compass’ design an added dash of sophistication. The taillights design has been revised too but perhaps the most notable changes are to be seen inside!

We reviewed the range-topping Compass 4x4 Trailhawk last year and its interior design does look and feel dated compared with many of its rivals. Jeep, however, has modernised the Compass’ cabin by installing a large, upright 10.1-inch infotainment system as well as a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster. The dashboard and centre console itself also features a new design and Jeep has also thrown in a new steering wheel. All in all, it looks much better!
