We’ve uncovered local pricing for the facelifted Kia Picanto line-up ahead of the refreshed hatchback’s official launch in South Africa. Here’s how much you’ll pay…
The facelifted Kia Picanto is scheduled to launch in South Africa soon. Now, ahead of the updated A-segment hatchback’s official market introduction, Cars.co.za can confirm local pricing for what remains the Korean firm’s most affordable model in Mzansi.
Interestingly, the refreshed 3rd-generation Picanto line-up has shrunk slightly – at launch, at least – compared with the pre-facelift portfolio. While the outgoing roster featured as many as 10 derivatives (including a trio of Runner-badged panel-van models), the facelifted range comprises 6 derivatives at launch.
In addition, Kia South Africa has brought the revised JA-series Picanto’s trim-level naming strategy in line with much of the rest of the Kia range, ditching the old Start, Street and Style grades in favour of the LX, EX and EX+ trim levels (suffixes similar to those used on the 2nd-gen Picanto).
Furthermore, the previously range-topping X-Line derivatives have fallen away, while there’s no sign of the sporty GT-Line specification shown at the global reveal back in July 2023. For the record, the outgoing 10-strong Picanto line-up ran from R240 995 to R304 995, while the facelifted 6-derivative range is priced from R260 995 to R325 995.
As before, however, the SA-spec Picanto is available with a choice of naturally aspirated petrol engines: a 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder motor and a 1.2-litre, 4-cylinder unit. The smaller powerplant offers an unchanged 49 kW and 95 Nm, while the 4-pot now generates 62 kW (up a single unit) and 122 Nm (the same as before). Drive is again delivered to the front axle via either a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 4-speed automatic transmission (the latter effectively an option on each grade).

Lmao, For R270K you can get a 2023 Hyundai i20 1.0T fluid Demo. Who the hell is paying R260k for a Picanto, base spec picanto no less.
Also WTF , cruise control on a NA 1.OL 3 cylinder? Goodluck with that.

Tiggo4 pricing is at Suzuki Fronx level. Suzuki generally has the benefits of good fuel consumption, reliability and long-term presence in SA.
Couple weeks back I saw a reviewer on Twitter with an Omega that had the entire dashboard display switch off. Nee fok, let the Chinese improve for a few years like the Koreans in the early 2000s.

Summary
Having driven (a manual) 2024 Picanto I can confirm that it still does precisely what it is meant to do – with aplomb. It’s a cheeky little city car that feels big and comfy on the inside but can fit into the tightest of spaces when you need it to. I’m not sure if people still remember what a Tardis is, but this is like that.
A phone box (dear Gen Z and younger, it doesn’t mean what you probably think it does) with all the mod cons you could desire, so long as you don’t mind the fact that travelling far distances will take some time.

Beneath the bonnet, the Kia Picanto employs the same line-up of engines: a 1.0-litre three-cylinder mill which produces 49kW and 95Nm of torque, and a 1.2-litre engine which is good for 62kW and 122Nm of torque. Two transmission options are on offer: a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed automatic.
Down in the Mother City, the former engine which we sampled felt every bit sufficient in the hustle and bustle of the city centre. The manual transmission was smooth shifting, and with the compact size of the Picanto, we were able to navigate through the streets of the city quite easily.
What does it cost?
When it comes to pricing, the 2024 Kia Picanto is no longer a ‘starter pack’ as we used to know it. With a starting price of R260,995 for the entry level LX manual model, it’s by no means a ‘cheap’ car.
With fierce competition and alternatives at a similar price point, the Picanto nameplate may have its work cut out for it in the local market.
