Nearly-new buying guide: Mazda 3

The previous version of Mazda’s Focus rival is a great buy, but dismiss the diesels if you don't do big miles

Given Mazda’s fondness for clever engineering and doing things its own sweet way, any new model from the Japanese car maker is always worth getting excited about. And so it was with the Mazda 3 of 2014. It has just been replaced by an all-new model, but as late as last year the outgoing car was still getting the better of fresher rivals.

In this magazine it found itself in the final four of an eight-car group test battling the Skoda Octavia, Volkswagen Golf and new Ford Focus for top honours. It came third, but Matt Saunders was moved enough to say that he couldn’t have picked a tougher dynamic test for the Focus than to compare it with the Mazda 3.

He was referring to the hatchback version, by the way. There’s also a saloon, called the Fastback, but the hatch is easily the more popular and the one we’re interested in here.

The model has only just been replaced, so you can still pick up 2019/19-registered cars with a couple of thousand miles from around £16,000. At this money, many are high-spec 2.2d SE-L Nav and Sport Nav models.

If you’re a high-mileage driver or just like the idea of 60mpg without trying, these 148bhp 2.2-litre diesel versions are a good choice – and decent performers. There’s a 104bhp 1.5 diesel, too, introduced in 2016, but it’s weedy and rare. If you must, you can pick up a 2018/18 SE-L Nav with 5000 miles for £14,000.

Really, because there are more to choose from and they suit the Mazda 3’s light-footed nature better, it’s the petrols you want to focus on. At various times the model was offered with a choice of three petrol engines: a 1.5 with a lowly 99bhp (it was dropped in 2016) and a pair of 2.0s, one making 118bhp and the other with a healthy 163bhp.

I am looking at these 2 cars: 1). 2017 Hatchback Mazda3 2.0 Individual Auto, with 46 000 km on the clock and it goes for R220 000
2) 2018 Mazda2 1.5 Individual Plus Auto, with 23 000 km on the clock for R235 000
Both of these cars are sold by two different Mazda Dealerships.

I drive about 120 km every day to work from Boksburg to Pretoria. I test drove the Mazda 2 today and hopefully tomorrow it be the Mazda 3. I currently drive a 2014 1.6 Peugeot 208 (turbo-diesel) and I want to trade it in. The Mazda 2 drives well and it looks and feels premium compared to the Peugeot 208. My mind says the Mazda 3 is the best deal however, I would like to hear from any owners of these cars (Mazda 2 and 3).

By the way, my wife drives a 2008 1.4 Peugeot 207 which surprisingly feels more balanced and sturdy in terms of driving dynamics and to some degree better finished inside as well, it does not feel cheap. And, I never had to change shocks on the peugeot 207 ever since it was bought new in 2008 but strangely one had to on the Peugeot 208 last year.

In any case, which car do you think is worth one's hard earned cash?

Personally like for the like 3er easily. The fact it's the top line 2L model with great spec.

120km commute is a moerse daily distance for a Cape Town oke, the 3 easily imo.

I would say the Mazda 2, since the Mazda 3 is the last gen. More tech and feature for your long daily drive.

Have a look into the Opel Astra as well, I think they would be similarily priced.

I would say go for the Mazda 3. It's a bigger and more grownup car.

This commute can be very exhausting; I am just waiting for an opportunity to leave the city. Anyway, hopefully I will test drive it today if it is still available or if I am able to.

They do. I have a Mazda CX-3 now. Had a Mazda 2 before. They drive really well and I've never had mechanical issues.
 
Well, I went to Mazda Bruma yesterday and I was told the car had just been taken to Mazda Head Office. Part of me did not believe their story, and I was told by the sale guy that he will send it to PTA the following which has not happened. With regards to the Mazda 2, I do think it would be a bit small since I have a 2 plus year old son. The positive is that I can just wait until I pay off the Peugeot 208 in 2021 and probably get something better. By the way, in 2021 we will also be paying off our 2014 Honda Civic 1.6 Dtec (I love this car).

This also caught my attention:

It is a 2017 Kia Cerato 2.0 Exec for R189 000.
