Toyota South Africa has added a range-topping 1.2T Luxury derivative to its C-HR compact family car range. Here are the specs and prices of the consolidated line-up.
The C-HR was launched in our market in early 2017 and the distinctively styled crossover has proven quite popular among fashion-conscious urbanites. For 2018, Toyota South Africa has introduced a flagship version that boasts more equipment and safety features as standard.
Visually, the 1.2T Luxury derivative is distinguishable by a two-tone paint finish, but the key changes feature in the newcomer's interior. Additional standard equipment includes leather trim, push-button start, seat-back pockets, heated seats, LED headlamps, LED front fog lights and tail light clusters, colour-coded auto-folding and heated side mirrors, park distance control and intelligent park assist. The safety spec has improved too... Whereas other C-HR derivatives have only two airbags, the 1.2T Luxury comes equipped with driver-, passenger-, side-, curtain- and knee airbags.
The powertrain remains unchanged. The 2018 Toyota C-HR 1.2T Luxury is powered by a 1.2-litre 4-cylinder turbopetrol motor that produces 85 kW and 185 Nm; it drives the front wheels via a continuously variable (automatic) transmission. Fuel economy is claimed to be 6.4 L/100 km.

New Luxury model tops Toyota CH-R range
Toyota has given its C-HR crossover an extra ‘touch of class’ in the shape of an additional range-topping derivative loaded with comfort, convenience and safety features.
It’s called (no surprise here) the Luxury model, and you’ll know it by its distinctive two-tone colour finish, with a black roof, pillars and side-mirrors over pearl white, metallic red, smoked silver or solid bluer lower body - or you can opt for a black body with a white roof.
It also comes with special smoked tail-light lenses and full-LED head and fog-lights, including daytime running lights, and shares the 18-inch alloy wheels of the Plus model.
New features include keyless entry and push-button start, self-folding mirrors, soft-touch leather trim with contrast stitching on the upper dashboard and textured leather seating with heated squabs for the front seats and electrically adjustable lumbar support for the driver.
And heading the list of gizmotronics is a new self-parking system that uses the standard-across-the-range parking sensors, together with a new intelligent parking assist routine, to find an open parking spot, measure it to make sure your CH-R will fit and then steer you neatly into the bay.
The Luxury has the same 1.2-litre direct-injection DOHC turbopetrol four as the rest of the CH-R range, rated for 85kW and 185Nm from 1500-4000rpm - but is only available with continuously variable transmission.
This also has a Manual mode with seven pre-defined ratios, and even provides a modicum of engine braking on the overrun, which conventional CVT transmissions can’t. Performance is quoted as 0-100 in 10.9 seconds and 190km/h flat out.
In addition to the active safety features found in all CH-Rs, the Luxury model also boasts a total of nine airbags - front, driver knee, side and curtain - in place of the lower-specced versions’ basic two front airbags.

Verdict
This C-HR makes a strong case for itself by offering compelling styling and a raft of useful comfort and convenience features. However, these changes come at a cost and with a price tag of just below R430 000, the C-HR 1.2T Luxury is a pricey option in this segment, especially when one considers that there are more practical and spacious products on offer for less money. If your budget can’t stretch that far, then it’s best to consider more affordable options in the C-HR range such as the 1.2T Plus derivative priced at R369 200 or opt for something more practical in the form of the Honda HR-V.
Nonetheless, keen-eyed fashion conscious buyers will argue that none of the C-HR rivals looks quite as good as the 1.2T Luxury and, in a world where looks matter a lot, that counts for something. Toyota’s reputation for reliability and a widespread dealer network also needs to be factored into your decision.

Toyota launches China-only electric C-HR
China's first electric Toyota shares a platform with the Corolla and will go on sale in 2020
Toyota has revealed an electric variant of its C-HR compact SUV exclusively for the Chinese market.
Unveiled at the Shanghai motor show alongside the identical Izoa, which will be produced by Chinese company FAW, the C-HR EV will go on sale in 2020.
The new model, first announced at the Beijing motor show last year, is the first electric Toyota to become available in China, and the first to use the firm’s new TNGA platform as featured on the new Corolla.
Performance and powertrain details are unconfirmed, but subtle styling revisions such as the absence of a front grille differentiate the new EV from its conventionally fuelled sibling.
The unveiling is the first step in Toyota’s plan to introduce 10 electrified models in China over the next five years, in line with Chinese government requirements for manufacturers to electrify a percentage of their line-ups.
The C-HR is sold in the UK with conventional petrol and petrol-electric hybrid powertrains.
Last month Toyota unveiled Chinese-market plug-in hybrid variants of the Corolla and FAW-built Levin, which joined the electric C-HR on Toyota’s Shanghai stand, alongside the Rhombus - a futuristic EV urban EV designed by Chinese firm TMEC.

A fresh report out of Europe suggests Toyota is developing a new small SUV to slot in below the C-HR crossover.
The folks over at CarAdvice spotted the single line in an Automotive News Europe report claiming the Japanese brand plans to expand its crossover range with a new entry-level model.
The report claims the firm will produce the newcomer “at its plant in Valenciennes, France, either this year or early next [2020]”.
Currently, Toyota builds the European-spec Yaris in France, with the hatchback expected to move into its fourth generation either towards the end of 2019 or early in 2020. This timing suggests the rumoured baby SUV could share much with the next-generation Yaris.

What's changed?
Toyota’s designers have reshaped the C-HR’s LED headlights, with a reorientation of the individual light diode pattern. Below the new headlights, there's a remoulded front bumper.
Around the rear, C-HR gains a similar reoriented LED light pattern, with a black styling line connecting the taillights. The C-HR also rolls on a new blacked-out alloy wheel design, as an option on the high-trim variants.
The most significant upgrade for new C-HR, is inside. Toyota has finally responded to customer requests for better Smartphone integration, with an improved 8-inch infotainment system which features Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, offering complete Smartphone function mirroring.
Toyota will include a hybrid powertrain option for C-HR, using a petrol-electric version of the company's 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine, which is good for 91kW and claimed to average 4.3l/100km.

Refreshed Toyota C-HR handed the GR Sport treatment in Japan
Toyota has handed its recently facelifted C-HR the GR Sport treatment in Japan, adding some visual and mechanical spice to the little crossover.
From what we understand, Toyota plans to offer the new C-HR GR Sport exclusively in its home market of Japan ... for the time being, at least.
So, what sets the GR-branded model apart from the cooking variants? Well, while nothing’s changed under the bonnet – the C-HR retains its 85 kW/185 N.m turbocharged 1,2-litre four-cylinder petrol engine (along with the choice of a 1,8-litre hybrid powertrain in Japan) and six-speed manual gearbox – a handful of sporty bits have been added.
There’s a new centre brace for increased body rigidity, a revised steering set-up and updates to various suspension components (such as the coil springs, shock absorbers and stabilisers).

Well, while nothing’s changed under the bonnet – the C-HR retains its 85 kW/185 N.m turbocharged 1,2-litre four-cylinder petrol engine (along with the choice of a 1,8-litre hybrid powertrain in Japan) and six-speed manual gearbox – a handful of sporty bits have been added.
There’s a new centre brace for increased body rigidity, a revised steering set-up and updates to various suspension components (such as the coil springs, shock absorbers and stabilisers).

Toyota C-HR GR Sport Revealed
Now that the Gazoo Racing brand is almost established, it's keen to start tinkering with Toyota's lineup. The next model to get the GR treatment is the C-HR and the C-HR GR Sport is now official.
As you can see, it's gained quite the visual upgrade. There are also changes to the chassis to liven up the driving experience. There's a new bumper up front with a large grill, with GR Sport badges on the grille, front fenders and tailgate. Also thrown in are these attractive 19-inch dual-tone alloy wheels wrapped in 225/45 R19 rubber. Toyota says its new C-HR GR is available in 11 colours, including 5 2-tone schemes with black roof.
