2017 VW Tiguan (2nd Generation)

"The Volkswagen Tiguan 1.4 TSI Comfortline R-Line (manual) costs R437 000 and comes backed with a 3-years/120 000 km warranty and 5-years/90 000 km service plan. Service intervals are scheduled for every 15 000 km. For more budget-conscious, practically-minded buyers it may be worth considering the same model, but without the sporty R-Line add-ons. Specified as such, the Tiguan will cost you a somewhat more reasonable R419 000. Interestingly, this model has 17-inch wheels and plumper tyres, so you could end up paying less and enjoying a vehicle with an improved ride quality. Worth considering..."

After looking a several cars over the weekend, including some double cabs, my wife was only convinced about the X-Trail. The others were either too small, too boring or too expensive. The Nissan hit the sweet spot with all of those. We can't wait to take it on a long trip this December...

I don't get your point? If it doesn't have a VW badge it's not good enough, or what? Put it this way: a similar spec Tiguan to the car I got would've been close to R500k, if not more. I paid R380k (excluding trade-in of course) for the 2.5 SE CVT 4x4 with "techno pack" (which adds satnav, 7" touch screen infotainment, lane departure warning, blind spot monitor, 360° cameras with moving object detection and 18" wheels). The car looks great with the 18" wheels and I'm loving the copper blaze colour more every day...

I'm not answering for him and I don't say VW only. The Nissan is good and if you + your wife likes it, who cares? But... for me, it is dual clutch over CVT, having lived with both. It is also small turbocharged over larger naturally aspirated, having lived with both. Then there is an amazing infotainment system, digital dash, VW interior (their good) etc etc etc. Imagine the 2.0TSI AWD. It will be a stunning vehicle and I would pay top dollar for it, if I could afford it. Right now though, I'll stick with my few year old Passat, but I can definitely imagine a Tiguan as my next car.

SA Gen 2 Tiguan ad

Australian television viewers have complained about a Volkswagen Tiguan advert – similar to the one broadcast on South African TV – that makes light of parents seemingly forgetting their child in the vehicle.

The spot shows a couple in a variety of scenes forgetting that their daughter is sitting in the back seat. VW ends the advertisement (which isn’t nearly as strange as this one) with the words: “Easy to forget it’s a family car”.

Angry viewers contacted the watchdog, describing the commercial as “brutally insensitive”, “appalling and disturbing”, “very offensive”, “extremely concerning”, “in poor taste” and “incredibly inappropriate”, considering many children (and pets) had died after being left in hot cars.

Australia’s Advertising Standards Board, however, dismissed the complaints, finding that the commercial was “light-hearted”.

In my opinion, I would take either of the Europeans, even the Frenchie, over the Koreans. The Tucson looks sort of okay from the outside, but for what you get on the inside, it is horribly overpriced.

Do note I said best looking (exterior at least). If it was my money the underated Kadjar would get a top 2/3.

No comment on the circa 2002 infotainment system.

Wow really, how did you come to realise this? Was it the fact that I was the one that typed the post? Interesting....

Obviously, I was just conveying my disagreement. In fact, I disagree with basically everything you've said in this section recently. Also... I thought you were going to ignore me.

Only the pap 81kw model so far?! Not very smart VWSA...

In September this year, Volkswagen introduced the second-generation Tiguan to South Africa, with the line-up at launch comprising three petrol-powered derivatives.

Sales in the Tiguan’s first two months on the market totalled 608 units, despite the lack of a diesel powertrain (the 162 kW 2,0 TSI, meanwhile, snuck onto the price-list in October). But now the local arm of the Wolfsburg automaker is poised to add the first TDI derivative to its range.

The Volkswagen Tiguan 2,0 TDI Comfortline will be priced at R469 500, or R489 500 if you specify the R-Line styling kit. The four-cylinder turbo-diesel makes 81 kW and 250 N.m, with the latter on tap between 1 500 and 3 000 r/min.

Drive is sent to the front wheels via a six-speed manual transmission, with VW claiming an average fuel consumption figure of 5,4 L/100 km.

It’s interesting that only this lower-output derivative (in mid-level Comfortline trim) has found its way onto the official price-list, seeing as Volkswagen SA has expressed an intention to add both 105 kW and 130 kW versions of the same engine – mated to its 4Motion all-wheel-drive system – before the end of the year.

Still, perhaps these mills are on their way. Take note, however, that VW SA has no plans to add the 176 kW bi-turbo diesel (designated BiTDI) to its local line-up.

Check out the latest pricing below to see where the new 81 kW TDI variant slots in…

Volkswagen has added two new diesel models to the Tiguan range, including a high-powered 4Motion model.

The Tiguan range is starting to look complete now that Volkswagen SA has added 3 diesel engines to its model lineup. The turbodiesel models are open for orders but, are only arriving in the country in the new year (2017).

in Comfortline specification (the Tiguan's middle choice of equipment lines) you can have a 2-litre 81 kW/250 Nm unit with a 5-speed manual gearbox. The sporty R-Line kit can also be added to this model at an additional R20k. If you want an automatic (DSG) then you'll have to opt for the 4Motion (all-wheel-drive) models. The 2-litre engine is the DSG is beefed up to produce 105 kW and probably close to 300 Nm of torque (no torque figure listed).

The top-spec turbodiesel model is only available in Highline trim level but, has even more power with 130 kW and 350 Nm as used in the Passat. Again, it will use the 7-speed DSG gearbox and 4Motion.

The new diesels are only likely to be available from the new year as they are still on their way to SA but, VW expects the bulk of its Tiguan sales to be diesel models from then on.
