2017 VW Tiguan (2nd Generation)

This is the all-new Tiguan; it's a looker.

"Volkswagen is presenting the newly developed VW Tiguan at the 2015 IAA. In this case, "new" means completely new - revolution instead of evolution. That is because the second generation Tiguan is the first Volkswagen Group SUV whose design is based on the MQB platform, which is future oriented in all of its aspects."

Top TSI petrol has the 162kw GTI motor & top TDI the new Passat 176kw Biturbo motor.

Spy Shots: Volkswagen Tiguan R Coming Soon?

Our spy photographers have captured images of a Tiguan R prototype in the snowy wilds of Sweden. Here’s what you can…

SUVs with credible performance are becoming increasingly popular. The standard Tiguan has been selling strongly in South Africa and there may very well be a case to be made for a performance-orientated Tiguan R.

These latest spy images show a Tiguan R prototype testing with very little camouflage which is an indication that a production model is not too far off. The Tiguan R prototype reportedly previews the facelifted Tiguan which is also expected soon. As you would expect, the Tiguan R will feature a sportier bumper with larger air intakes and a quad exhaust system will set this derivative apart from the rest of the range.

Volkswagen Tiguan R Spied Testing In The Snow

The Tiguan R has been seen testing for quite some time now but now that the reveal of the facelift is imminent it seems we may actually get a high-performance compact crossover from Volkswagen.

A new batch of spy shots from Sweden has surfaced not only showing that it is the facelifted variant but also appears to show that the production version of the Tiguan R will join the refreshed model lineup.

Long-anticipated Cupra Ateca rival resurfaces, showing off a new front end design and quad exhausts

New spy images show what appears to be an R performance variant of the Volkswagen Tiguan, nearly a year since prototypes were last spotted.

While initially appearing to be an example of the high-end Tiguan R-Line, tell-tale signs that this is something more special include a visible intercooler behind the lower air intake, larger brakes and, most notably, the same quad tailpipes as the Golf R hatchback.

Volkswagen Tiguan handed power hike to (nearly) match outgoing Golf R

Remember that report from 2019 suggesting the Volkswagen Tiguan R would be released only in 2021? It seems the wait is too long for the folks at O.CT, with the Swiss tuner handing the 2,0-litre variant near-Golf R levels of power.

As standard, the Tiguan in 2,0-litre turbopetrol guise churns out 162 kW and 350 N.m of torque. But thanks to some tweaks made to its electronic control unit, the midsize SUV’s four-pot now sends 221 kW and 440 N.m to both axles via the Wolfsburg-based automaker’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive setup. That’s a mere 7 kW less than VW’s hottest hatchback (in SA-spec Golf 7 R form, anyway). However, the O.CT-tuned Tiguan boasts 40 N.m more than the R-badged Golf.

Volkswagen's most-built vehicle in 2019 wasn’t the Golf or Polo

The Volkswagen brand has released its production figures for 2019, with some 6 184 146 VW-badged units built (a hefty chunk by vehicle-producing joint ventures in China) during the year.

The Wolfsburg-based firm revealed the information during the VW Group’s annual media conference.

Interestingly, the Tiguan is at the very top of the pile, with a whopping 910 926 units produced in 2019. VW says the five-millionth Tiguan rolled off the assembly line at its Wolfsburg plant during the year (the vehicle is also manufactured at factories in China, Mexico and Russia).

Volkswagen Readies Tiguan + Arteon Plug In Hybrids

Volkswagen has announced plug-in hybrid versions of its Tiguan and Arteon to be released in 2020.

Volkswagen is making good on its electric mobility plans and while the all-electric ID.3 has been delayed, the brand is expanding its portfolio with an array of plug-in hybrids. Volkswagen claims the demand for some form of electrification has increased considerably in its domestic market of Germany with 1 in 2 Volkswagen Up! units is for the electric model, while 1 in 7 Passats sold is the plug-in hybrid.

Is this slammed VW Tiguan the future of tuning?

Because what are the tuners meant to do if everyone only buys crossovers?

You don’t need us to tell you, but we… will. Crossovers have taken over the world. Forget estates, we’ve all decided that these jacked-up things are the perfect family cars.

However, young parents these days would have grown up in the madcap Max Power era of the 1990s, so what happens when you’ve taken the plunge on a child-transporter but the urge to modify still remains?

Well, you can see the answer above – a slammed, widebody Volkswagen Tiguan R-Line courtesy of UK-based wrappers (not that kind) Vinyl Image. .

VW Tayron X is a Tiguan Coupe

New roof and tailgate for Tiguan platform as VW begins to chase the SUV coupe craze.

VW has revealed images of its latest coupe – and obviously it is based on one of the brand’s popular SUVs.

The Tayron X is a sloping roofline version of VW’s Tiguan platform and the design logic is to harvest the surging tide of demand for anything with elevated ride height and a curvy roof section.

Like the Tiguan, it rides on VW’s proven MQB platform - which runs anything from a Polo to a Caddy to a Q3. Bumper-to-bumper the Tayron X measures 4.62 m, which places it between a standard Tiguan and a Tiguan Allspace.

Height is the dimension where Tayron X expectedly differs from a conventional Tiguan. Measured from the road surface to its roof, the Tayron X stands 1.66 m tall, which is slightly lower than a Tiguan, at 1.67m.

An interesting design detail applied to the Tayron X, for VW brand fans, is its rear illumination. The taillights have an X-shaped LED illumination profile which is different from anything seen on the current Tiguan. There is a possibility of those lights being a clue to what the next Tiguan upgrade could entail, in terms of rear styling.

2020 Volkswagen Tiguan R prototype previews SUV's facelift

Long-anticipated Cupra Ateca rival resurfaces, showing off a new front end design and quad exhausts

New spy images show what appears to be an R performance variant of the Volkswagen Tiguan testing at the Nurburgring.

While initially appearing to be an example of the high-end Tiguan R-Line, tell-tale signs that this is something more special include a visible intercooler behind the lower air intake, larger brakes and, most notably, the same quad tailpipes as the Golf R hatchback.

A subtly reworked front end and other styling tweaks compared with previous Tiguan R prototypes indicate that it will likely make its official debut when the standard Tiguan is facelifted later this year. The Tiguan will be the third model in Volkswagen's range to receive the R treatment, sitting above the newly launched T-Roc R and below the forthcoming plug-in hybrid Touareg R.

Speaking to Autocar recently, R division boss Jost Capito spoke candidly about the idea of a Tiguan R. “I can see a place for a Tiguan R,” he said. “We’ve seen the good things that can be achieved with the T-Roc, but the Tiguan would be a different kind of car. It would have to be more of an everyday model, like the Touareg.”

Volkswagen Tiguan facelift: first teaser image drops (with initial details)!

Volkswagen has released the first teaser image depicting its facelifted Tiguan, while also revealing initial details about the updated crossover.

The Wolfsburg-based firm first showed the teaser sketch during a Skype presentation attended by CARmag.co.za and various other publications, discussing the global success of the Tiguan and Tiguan Allspace (the nameplate was VW's most-built globally in 2019, beating the Polo and Golf).

Dr. Hendrik Muth, head of product marketing for the brand, said the refreshed Tiguan would receive a “totally new front” allowing for a “more dynamic and masculine” overall design.

Judging by the teaser sketch, the Tiguan’s facia will be brought neatly in line with those of its younger crossover siblings, such as the T-Cross and T-Roc. Muth added a “very expressive” R-Line version would again be available.

New Tiguan en route to SA - How Volkswagen's Tiguan acquired global domination in just one decade

In case you were not aware, SUVs and compact crossovers have been on the rise for the last two decades. The demand for these vehicles was so immense that manufacturers have at least one such car in their product portfolio.

Volkswagen, too, is no different and does it boast with four (T-Cross, Tiguan, Tiguan AllSpace, Touareg) of these vehicles.

But it's the Tiguan that's garnered the most interest as of late because, since its global introduction in 2007, it's been on an upward trajectory that has no intention of slowing down. In 2016, the second-generation was introduced, which garnered even more success than the model preceding it. In 2017, the Tiguan AllSpace (7-seater) joined the range.

Come 2020, and Volkswagen is on the eve of showcasing its updated Tiguan to the world. The automaker is excited about the prospect of having its new SUV build forth on the success of its forebears.

A global success

The path the Tiguan came along is one worth celebrating. During 2007's latter half, VW managed to sell 16 272 units, globally. Fair enough, it was only over the closing months of the year. In 2008, however, it increased exponentially to 150 416 units. This was big for Volkswagen because it proved that their market research was accurate.

But what Volkswagen perhaps did not envision was that the Tiguan would go on to become its top-selling vehicle. In 2017 and 2018, Tiguan sales stood on 770 000 and 861 000 units, respectively, which pushed global since in its 11-year existence to over five million units!

In 2019, however, the Tiguan's success grew even more, and by the end of the year, 911 000 units were sold globally! It's fair to say, then, that there’s a new sales leader in the Volkswagen stable.

Volkswagen identifies two reasons for the Tiguan's success: the global demand for compact SUVs, and serving that demand. The segment the Tiguan competes in is the largest and fastest-growing worldwide, and having two wheelbase options (normal and long) serve that need is an integral part of its success.

Volkswagen confirms ‘performance’ Tiguan; says it's coming 'very soon'

A Volkswagen executive has confirmed the German firm will offer a “performance” version of the soon-to-be-facelifted Tiguan “very soon”.

Dr. Hendrik Muth, head of product marketing for the VW brand, told journalists during a Skype presentation attended by CARmag.co.za that a go-faster Tiguan is on the cards.

“We are going to do something on the performance side. We want to tease and wait a little bit,” Muth said, opting not to confirm whether the new model would indeed wear the “R” badge.

“It will come very soon and very early in the lifecycle. But what exactly our performance version will be, we will announce at a later time,” he said, adding fans should be “be prepared” and “be excited”.

Wait, what? Volkswagen Tiguan to get GTI badge in US, claims report

A fresh report out of North America suggests Volkswagen will use the GTI badge on a performance version of the soon-to-be-facelifted Tiguan, though it will likely be restricted to that market.

According to CarBuzz, the rumoured Tiguan R is not on the cards for the United States (the country receives only the long-wheelbase body style we know as the Tiguan Allspace, after all), although VW is still planning some sort of “performance version” for the US.
