Volkswagen USA reveals a low-riding Tiguan concept for cycling enthusiasts

An SUV that’s been lowered like a performance hatch makes absolutely zero sense, but then neither do some of the most interesting cars out there. Whether that applies to this modified Volkswagen Tiguan really is a matter of opinion, but it certainly stands out.

Announced as an official concept car by Volkswagen USA, the Tiguan SE R-Line Black RiNo Concept was designed by VW enthusiast and car collector Jamie Orr.

The concept is set apart by numerous components from the aftermarket industry, including an adjustable coilover suspension system that allows it to ride so low, and a set of Rotiform OZR 20-inch alloy wheels shod with 285/35ZR20 tyres. Also included is a Forge Motorsport six-piston modified braking kit and Borla stainless steel exhaust system.

As Orr is an avid cyclist, he also worked with Marin Bikes to pair the Tiguan with the gloss black carbon fiber Alpine Trail 2. Included is a Thule T1 bike rack that mounts to the 680kg-rated receiver so drivers can easily take their bikes on drives with them.

VW Tiguan SE R-Line Black RiNo revealed as one-of-a-kind concept

Volkswagen US has whipped the wraps off a one-of-a-kind Tiguan before the arrival of the updated model. Dubbed the SE R-Line Black RiNo Concept, it’s been put together to showcase the midsize SUV’s “adventurous style, strength and spirit”.

Designed by Volkswagen enthusiast and collector Jamie Orr, to creat a “fast and purposeful” look, the Tiguan SE R-Line Black RiNo Concept is equipped with wider (up by 50 mm to now measure 285/35 in size), Continental SportContact 5P tyres. In addition to the latter, Orr fitted a set of 20-inch matte anthracite Rotiform OZR wheels, replete with black hexagonal centre caps.

The front alloys now house a pair of performance-orientated six-piston brake callipers from Forge Motorsport USA to “control the speed of the Tiguan in a variety of weather and road conditions”. Handing the midsize Volkswagen SUV a purposeful stance, the Tiguan was equipped with Solo-Werks-sourced height-adjustable coilover air-suspension setup.

Two of our favourite all-weather hot hatches have spawned rapid high-rise crossovers, but only one of them truly convinces

While you find yourself with a grudging respect for the Volkswagen, it’s hard not to develop some genuine warmth for the Mercedes. AMG’s Direct Steer is too, er, direct offcentre and there’s almost nothing in the way of feedback, but if anything, the lower-feeling driving position makes the AMG easier to place than the VW. Both cars then ride with surprising fluency with the dampers in their most relaxed settings, but the AMG breathes more with the road. And while its 302bhp engine feels the less potent of the two and resorts to the same sonic fakery as the EA888 in the Tiguan R, the GLB 35 is still an unambiguously fast car and the flavour of made-up engine noise is sweeter. It’s simply a more personable machine and more comfortable in its beefcake seven-seater skin.

So the AMG wins. Its reason for being is clearer, while in the Tiguan R you’d always wonder if it needed to be so big, and how much better the Golf R would be doing things. But that’s strike three, and we’re out.

VW’s updated Tiguan Allspace seven-seater teased

Following the reveal of the facelifted Tiguan five-seater almost a year ago, Volkswagen is finally preparing to pull the covers off the revised seven-seat Tiguan Allspace model.

Set to debut next Wednesday, May 12, the 2021 Tiguan Allspace will receive a number of stylistic and technological updates to see it through until the introduction of the next-generation model.

The design changes are likely to mirror those seen on the regular Tiguan, which received a redesigned front end that bears some resemblance to the T-Cross and T-Roc SUVs.

For the 2022 model year, Volkswagen of America will launch a refreshed model with new styling and technology to elevate its compelling blend of utility and performance.

"The 2022 Tiguan represents a strong refresh for one of our best-selling SUVs," said Hein Schafer, Senior Vice President for Product Marketing and Strategy. "It boasts sportier exterior styling, attainable technology, and competitive driver assistance feature deployment."

On the outside, the Volkswagen Tiguan keeps its iconic look, but sharpens it with a completely revised front end. A distinctive bumper and broad grille are complemented by standard LED headlights and daytime running lights (DRLs), and can be accented further by an available illuminated light line flanking the VW logo. The top two trims feature updated, sporty R-Line® design elements, including bumpers and side sills. The distinctive side profile of the Tiguan remains with its strong character line carrying from the front fender through to the standard LED taillights. Newly centered Tiguan lettering on the rear matches Volkswagen family styling from the Arteon to the all-new Taos. The 2022 Tiguan will be available in eight exterior colors-including new Oryx White and Kings Red Metallic-and every trim level receives new wheels, ranging from 17-inch to 20-inch aluminum-alloy designs.

2021 Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace gains style tweaks and new tech

Seven-seater follows five-seat Tiguan, gains interactive LED lighting, infotainment upgrades and enhanced speakers

Volkswagen has updated the long-wheelbase version of its Tiguan SUV, the Allspace, bringing exterior styling tweaks, enhanced safety technology and improved infotainment.

Like the five-seat standard car, itself substantially updated last year, the Allspace gains a redesigned front end incorporating a more prominent grille with illuminated strips and a redesigned Volkswagen emblem.

Volkswagen has updated the SUV’s headlights, adding new interactive IQ Light LED Lights to follow in the footsteps of the standard Tiguan. First used by Volkswagen in its other, more luxurious SUV, the Touareg, these comprise 24 individual LED diodes that can adjust, partly automatically, to different driving conditions.

The IQ Drive Travel Assist system is also new for the facelifted Tiguan Allspace, providing level two autonomous driving assist functions at speeds of up to 130mph.

While Volkswagen recently introduced a plug-in hybrid variant for the standard Tiguan, as well as a 316bhp high-performance R version, joining the larger Touareg R as part of its performance division’s rapidly expanding line-up, it will not offer either variants for the Allspace.

I like the look of the allspace, the normal tiguan just looks too short/small.
 
Updated Tiguan Allspace Revealed - Coming to SA in 2022

llowing the updated Tiguan, Volkswagen has shown the 7-seater, slightly bigger Allspace, set to go on sale in SA in 2022.

The Tiguan is VW's best-selling car globally, a very important model to say the least. The Allspace variant carries 2 more passengers in the rear, allowing both your kids to now bring friends on holiday if that's your scene.

The Allspace has a redesigned LED lighting setup at the front and a bumper design inspired by the latest Golf 8. The LED lights consist of 24 individual strips that can modulate the brightness of the LED depending on outside conditions. The Allspace body kit will also be available in an R-Line trim for those looking for a sportier exterior. The R-line kit houses the dual exhaust pipes within the rear bumper. New wheel designs have been added to the facelift and the Tiguan badge now sits underneath the VW logo at the rear.

The interior features VW's new IQ travel assist which allows for semi-autonomous driving, although whether this system will come to SA is still to be seen. The updated interior includes new climate control switches which are now touch-sensitive as opposed to the physical buttons of the previous generation. Volkswagen appears to have also teamed up with audio specialists Harmon Kardon to develop an optional high-end sound system. Wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto will also make an appearance in line with the update on the standard Tiguan.

The facelifted Volkswagen Tiguan is set to hit South African showrooms from the beginning of July and we now know how much its costs.

The new Volkswagen Tiguan will be available in four flavours, with the entry-level 1,4 TSI kicking things off at R521 000, and the DSG-equipped 1,4 TSI Life and R-Line models filling out the middle of the range at R587 200 and R644 500 respectively. Topping the line-up is a 2,0 TSI R-Line that retails for R710 000.

There isn’t much of a premium to pay for the facelift, with the base model costing just R5 000 more than the outgoing 1,4 TSI Trendline, while the 2,0 TSI R-Line is actually R1 000 cheaper than before.

For now buyers have just two turbopetrol engine choices in the form of a 1,4-litre unit that produces 110 kW and 250 N.m, and a 2,0-litre motor that’s good for 162 kW and 350 N.m. Interestingly there’s no mention of diesel models in the line-up announced this week, however VWSA did previously indicate that a 2,0 TDI option would form part of the line-up, offering 130 kW and 380 N.m.

All Volkswagen Tiguan models are sold with a five-year or 90 000 km service plan and three-year or 120 000 km warranty.

Volkswagen spruces up its newly-launched Tiguan with special Urban Sport model

• Volkswagen launched a special edition of its Tiguan called the Urban Sport.

• Locally, the Tiguan is priced from R521 700.

• 'Urban Sport' lettering, 18-inch wheels and illuminated door sills are some of the new features.

Fresh from its global launch in 2021, Volkswagen has released a special edition of its updated Tiguan SUV known as the Urban Sport. The Tiguan first debuted locally in 2008, selling over 41 000 units in South Africa, with the current model selling with a starting price of R521 700.

The Urban Sport package is largely cosmetic with a colour-coded rear bumper, a black rear spoiler, a front bumper with high-gloss black accents, black wing mirror casings and an 'Urban Sport' lettering and light projection. The fitment of black, 18-inch Sebring alloy wheels come as standard.

hrm.. wife needs a major upgrade asap. I think the Tiguan is like the one to beat(albeit only a facelift change) with competitors doing major releases i.e.
Hyundai Tucson 2021, Kia Sportage 2021, Mazda Cx-5 2022. Oh and Nissan QuashQuai also this year?

We still deciding given Tucson(She likes hyundai) hasn't launched locally and Cx-5 is next year (hopefully they do something better with that media centre/Apple/Android Play) etc.
