2017 VW Tiguan (2nd Generation)

Volkswagen Tiguan R-Line eHybrid

The fleet-friendly Volkswagen Tiguan eHybrid is priced from £35,515 OTR in Life trim. The latest addition to Volkswagen's plug-in hybrid range is a key piece in the company's Way To Zero climate strategy. The newest PHEV model from the brand has a CO2 output from just 38 g/km (WLTP) and fuel economy of up to 176.6 mpg (WLTP, combined), with the capability to travel up to 30 miles purely on electric power from a single full charge.

The eHybrid drivetrain combines a 1.4-litre TSI petrol engine and a powerful electric motor, resulting in peak system output of 245 PS. It is available on value-packed Life, luxury-focused Elegance, and sporty R-Line trims, with respective WLTP CO2 emissions of 38, 43 and 41 g/km. The Life, starting at £35,515 OTR, also boasts a low P11D price of £35,460, and BIK taxation rate from only 11%, while the other trim levels represent similar value, especially to fleet customers, with respective BIK taxation rates of 13% and 11% for the Elegance and R-Line.

so i finally decided to get the new tiguan
i bought tiguan life 1.4 with panoramic sunroof, digital cockpit, few other extras.
the car is nice place to be in but the only thing that wish i did is going for the 2.0 tsi engine.
the 1.4 is good but the 2.0 is way better.
if you can afford the 2.0 tsi go for it

Volkswagen Tiguan eHybrid R-Line 2021 UK review

Should I buy one?

Taken all round, the Tiguan PHEV seems a fine day-to-day all-rounder with economy to burn, and it works especially well for business-based user-choosers, who will benefit hugely from the fact that it attracts benefit-in-kind taxation of only 11%. All those years ago, the Ford Cortina was a darling of the fleets, too.

Volkswagen Tiguan - when options come together to create a compelling package

  • Volkswagen Tiguan proves more premium in feel than its price suggests.
  • Punchy engine and gearbox make it a hoot to drive, but it can be light on fuel.
  • Test car's options prove that you can build a bespoke vehicle and not spend more than you should.
Overall Summary

With enough space in the interior and the trunk to provide peace of mind for families of up to four people and a wonderfully comfortable ride with precise handling in the segment, the Tiguan surprised us. Its styling updates turns heads, and its decent warranty and service plan makes us think that you can enjoy peace of mind motoring for many years to come if you opt for the Tiguan in your garage. The vehicle comes with a three-year or 120 000km warranty and a five-year or 90 000km Service Plan.

Most of the time, we find that the German manufacturers can get carried away with options in vehicles, but this Tiguan proved that you can build a bespoke SUV with attractive features and still come in at a respectable price point. Our car, in base trim, sold for R644 500. The options added another R100 000 to its asking price, but in the greater scheme of things, you come in way less for an SUV that feels premium and makes you feel good every time you drive it.

REVIEW | If you miss your Forester XT, the Tiguan 2.0 TSI R-Line is made for you

  • Range-topping Tiguan R-Line delivers the thrills until the full-fat Tiguan R arrives.
  • Performance on par with hot hatches, with surefooted grip and handling.
  • Packed with standard features, although optional equipment raises its premium feel.
Overall Summary

Priced at R710 00 as standard, the Tiguan R-Line range-topper is an excellent vehicle to consider if you want performance, space, good looks, and modern comfort and safety features. You might end up spending closer to R800 000 for one after you tick a few options boxes, which is by no means cheap, but if you consider the price of larger performance SUVs that start at more than a million bucks, this car is a winner. There's driving modes to help you on gravel or to tighten things up when the road gets twisty and you will quickly get used to the capacitive touch buttons in the interior.

Volkswagen claims a combined fuel consumption figure of 8.3litres/100km, but you won't achieve that if you use its boost like we did as we settled at around 11.0litres/100km after five days of stop-start traffic in the city. On the highway, it's economical and will make for a great holiday getaway vehicle for you and the family.

Very rarely a mid-size SUV comes along with such quirky character that captivates us as much as this Tiguan did, and we think it's a worthwhile consideration for your garage in 2022 and beyond before you move into an electric vehicle like the VW ID.5 in future. The Tiguan R-Line comes with a three-year or 120 000km warranty and a five-year or 90 000km Service Plan. If you miss your Forester XT, and you are in a position to afford this vehicle, take one for a spin and let us know what you think about it here.

Volkswagen Tiguan: What it’s like to live with

Should you buy a Tiguan?

When this generation of the Tiguan arrived in local showrooms in 2016, it was easy to recommend. Simply put, it was the best model in its segment – aided by Volkswagen’s brand reputation and extensive dealer network, the Tiguan won its category in the 2016/17 Cars.co.za Consumer Awards. However, the facelifted model demands an even bigger premium over its rivals than before and that’s before you spec options such as the panoramic roof, wireless app connectivity, parking camera system and semi-autonomous driving tech (including auto emergency braking). As impressive as it is, the Tiguan’s pricey.

What counts in the Tiguan favour, however, is that its rivals are also ageing and none of them is superior to the Volkswagen. New models of the Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage will arrive in Mzansi this year, which could see the VW’s market share decline. Having said that, if Haval continues to offer its H6 at R140k less than the equivalent Tiguan, all the legacy brands’ family SUVs are going to struggle.

ROAD TEST: Volkswagen Tiguan 2,0 TSI 4Motion DSG

TEST SUMMARY

The Tiguan has been a Top 12 winner and deservedly so. It is an all-round SUV that does nearly everything extremely well. It looks great, has an impressive powertrain with the torque of the turbo engine and slick DSG gearbox, resulting in a proper driver’s car. If the budget is constrained, the 1,4 TSI will do nicely and save around R100 000 or more. Low NVH levels and lots of comfort options lead us to question why anyone would need to spend more on anything fancier?

Volkswagen Tiguan vs Hyundai Tucson: Which should you buy?

What to Buy?

Family cars are required to wear many hats (and wear them all well) and both the Tiguan and the Tucson are excellent product offerings in their own right.

The Tiguan, in our opinion, does offer better performance (both engines) and overall it’s a great all-rounder when it comes to technology and practicality. However, it’s impossible to ignore the Tiguan’s steep pricing structure which is exacerbated when you start ticking off those optional extras. With that said, a fully-loaded, range-topping Tiguan will easily cost over R800k! The Tiguan is a pricey proposition and unless you can afford it, you will have to look elsewhere…

And that’s where Hyundai comes in. Yes, the naturally-aspirated Tucson might lack some punch but it makes up for it by offering good standard specification and a palatable pricing structure as well as offering significant peace of mind with a comprehensive warranty and service plan. If you have your heart set on the Tucson, we suggest that you consider the range-topping diesel-powered Elite derivative.

Your buying decision will ultimately depend on what’s more important to you. If you value performance above all else, then go for the Tiguan. If outright practicality and value-for-money are of greater importance to you, then we think the Tucson is a winner.

SUV lasted us just 1 month: Couple told to pay R20k for clutch

A Belhar couple say they have been left stranded after a buying car in Parow that is now standing in the workshop.

Kaashiefah Ederies and her husband Zain, purchased their 2013 Volkswagen Tiguan from BNA Motors but after driving the SUV for only a month, the clutch broke and they were told to pay over R20 000 for the repairs.

“On February 26, my husband and I were going to the mall around the corner from our home when the car started giving problems, so we had to turn around and go home,” says Kaashiefah.

“There was just no power in the car, a mechanic came and said the clutch was broken. I immediately made contact with the dealership and at first they did not reply to me but I kept on till I got a response.

As much as I dislike VW, that sounds pretty reasonable. At the end of 2019 when I started looking for my current car I test drove a 1.4t at Haval in Malmesbury. The car as a 2014 but with close to 150,000km on the clock - they told me they had just done the clutch which would otherwise cost whomever was buying it about R20k.

That's just how things are with manuals that sit in traffic.
