Stylish French chic!

DS 7 Crossback is a stylish vehicle that features a wide range of attributes. Taking the first step towards autonomous driving, innovative technologies such as DS ACTIVE LED VISION, DS CONNECTED PILOT and DS DRIVER ATTENTION ASSIST increase safety, comfort and peace of mind for both the driver and the passengers. For the exterior, a new diamond-effect grille, horizontal chrome DS Wings and LED rotating headlamps create dynamic lines on the body front, while the interior is available with a choice of four DS Inspiration ambiences reflecting the DS concept of even more personalisation options.

With its LED light signatures, unique interior stitching techniques, and the motorised watch by B.R.M placed on the dashboard, as featured on DS E-TENSE concept, DS 7 Crossback represents the brand's vision for the future. The SUV will be available with a plug-in hybrid petrol drivetrain with 300hp and 4WD, a new latest-generation Efficient Automatic Transmission with 8-speeds, a THP S&S 225hp engine and two electric motors.

An SUV with strong personality

"At all stages of the design process, the guiding aim for DS 7 Crossback was to express refinement, excellence and the best know-how implemented to the highest standards. The result is there to see, with an ideally proportioned car brimming with personality. It's a perfect alchemy of strength and style." Thierry Metroz, Director of Style, DS Automobiles

Charismatic, powerful and engaging, DS 7 Crossback immediately reveals its unique personality and beautifully proportioned design.

The horizontal chrome DS WINGS on the front conveys a sense of prestige with their strong, balanced lines. The DS emblem, redesigned for this new era, takes up a prominent stance in the centre of the new diamond-effect grille, resembling a coat of arms. The bonnet features subtle ribbing in the centre and the bi-ton mirrors emphasize the length and solidity of DS 7 Crossback. The sharp edges of the front and rear wings sculpt the sides to enhance the muscular beauty of this SUV. The wraparound tailgate showcases an imposing rear design, and emphasises the distinctive rear lights, designed with illuminated scales, and featuring scrolling directional indicators. This remarkable SUV stands apart for its presence and an interior optimised for all occupants, conveying an immediate sense of sumptuous comfort and space.

DS 7 Crossback kickstarts new model blitz for brand

DS plans Audi Q2 and Q7 rivals which could be called the DS 3 Crossback and DS 9 Crossback respectively

The new DS 7 Crossback will kickstart a new model blitz by the upmarket French brand, during which it will launch a new car every 12 months for the next six years, including a family of SUVs.

Speculation suggests that the DS 7 Crossback, which goes into production early in 2018, will be followed by the launch of a DS 3 Crossback, to rival the Audi Q2. A larger Audi Q7 rival is then said to be under consideration if the current trend for booming SUV sales continues and could be badged DS 9 Crossback.

The SUV family will likely be complimented by a replacement for the DS 3 supermini, and more traditional medium and large saloons, potentially named DS 5 and DS 9. However, the latter is highly dependent on how the Chinese market's tastes develop with its traditional hunger for large, chauffeur-driven saloons waning.

While declining to be drawn on specifics, while talking about the potential for a small SUV DS UK boss Arnaud Leclerc said: "What's clear is that we need to find a way to keep DS 3 customers with the brand and offer them something as they move up. It's also true that the segment for small SUVs is growing. But nothing is decided."

DS vice president of marketing Arnaud Ribault added: "It's true that to develop we will need a family of SUVs and a family of saloons. But where that takes us in terms of sizes and the order of our launches is less clear. The DS 7 represents a start; tradition may dictate we follow it with one smaller and one larger SUV - why not? - but we haven't announced this."

The DS 7 SUV will be built and sold in China, alongside the smaller China-only DS6 model which has been sold there since 2014. The latter car is based on older PSA Group technology and as such cannot be sold in other markets as it doesn't meet safety requirements.

Meet the first ever DS SUV, the DS 7

New DS will compete with the Audi Q3 and Mercedes GLA. We've even had a ride

What you’re looking at here is, of course, the inaugural DS SUV. It’s called the DS 7 Crossback, and it’s the first car developed as a DS from the get go (the DS 3, 4 and 5 were Citroens first).

The headlines are thus: it sits on the same EMP2 platform as the Peugeot 3008 and 5008, and its technical specification will broadly mirror those cars. This means familiar petrol and diesel engines, including the three-cylinder PureTech turbo petrol, and popular 1.6 and 2.0-litre diesels. Some will have the new eight-speed auto, others a six-speed manual and some a choice between the two.

A plug-in hybrid will follow in 2019, a year after the car’s launch ten months from now. DS is the first PSA brand to get this (and most other) tech. It combines a 196bhp four-cylinder petrol with two 80kW electric motors – one for each axle giving all-wheel drive. DS are claiming an electric-only range of 37miles and a combined 296bhp.

Most PHEVs sandwich the electric motor between the combustion engine and gearbox, but in the DS the e-motor is downstream of the gearbox. This means greater efficiency because the e-motor doesn’t have to run through the eight-speed auto. Clever. A recharge takes four hours from a normal plug, but it also regens while you’re braking or coasting.

Then there’s DS Active Scan Suspension. Basically, predictive damping via a camera mounted behind the rear-view mirror that spies potholes in the road and gives the suspension a heads-up. It’s a bit like Mercedes’ Magic Body Control, only that system uses active springs as well as adaptive dampers. Andre Louis, Deputy Director of the DS 7 project, tells us the fact DS has “no active springs, only dampers” is quite on purpose.

“The S-Class has active springs with a hydraulic piston, but we don’t want that because they are trying to make the car flat everywhere,” he says.

“This is not our target, because we want to be smooth. Very comfortable. I think your body feels the road, and the car continues to go flat. It’s very strange for the body. I prefer to have a car that follows the road – not with big movements, but it follows the road.” At the moment, the S-Class is the only other car with this kind of system.

We have had a quick ride in the 7, although the predictive system was deactivated (we get to try it in May, Andre promises us) and the adaptive dampers locked in normal mode. There’s plainly work left to be done. Comfort’s the aim, and once the jiggle the of the pre-prod is dialled out, it should ride fairly well. Although having said that, Britain’s roads are uniquely terrible, so there’s no knowing for certain until it lands for real. What we can tell you is that the seats are comfy, and that even in the camo’d pre-prod, wind and tyre roar is pretty well contained. Eight-speed auto seems smooth, too.

Related content

While we’re being technical, the headlights are worth a mention. They aren’t matrix ones like everyone else does (where specific LEDs are blocked or deactivated to create a dark patch around a car you’re following, or one coming the other way) because DS wants a more “homogenous” light pattern (its words), and they’re not linked to the GPS like Audi’s because DS says that has its disadvantages too. But DS is, nonetheless, very proud of them.

They’re made up of a one main and three subsidiary modules. When you unlock the car, those three modules rotate through 180 degrees and light-up purple. Cool, if completely useless. Night vision à la Audi, Mercedes and similar is a first for the segment, too. Other tech on offer includes adaptive cruise and lane-keeping, semi-autonomous parking and a pretty serious FOCAL stereo. All contribute to the ‘Lounge’ effect DS is going for with the 7 – dynamic serenity, they’re calling it.

Though it’s more or less the same size as the Audi Q5 and Mercedes GLC, DS says it’s with the Q3, GLA and BMW X1 that the DS 7 will be priced to compete. In the flesh it looks (and feels) way bigger than those cars, which no doubt has its appeal. And the design is more conventional than we’ve come to expect from DS – more closely resembling the restrained Audis, VWs and Mercedes of this world than the origami mentalness of the Lexus NX, or wilful oddness of the old DS 5.

The brand has a history of doing things a bit differently, and though there are some interesting little details dotted about – the taillights are especially cool – from afar the 7 could as easily be an Audi as a DS. This is clearly deliberate, and while the result is mostly successful, we will miss DS’s more radical style.

Inside the digital dials (from the 3008) and 12in centre screen are pretty cool and slick enough in their operation (we sampled a pre-prod car. Bit laggy, though the fundamentals are there), as with the exterior there are some neat details (the revolving BRM clock, for example) but again the broader design isn’t anything massively outrageous. Peugeot and even Citroen’s interiors are, probably, more distinctive.

Materials should be better in the DS, though. There’s leather everywhere, or you can have Alcantara if you go for the Performance Line ‘Inspiration’ (trim…). Granted the cars we had a play with were very early prototypes, but if DS is putting half as much effort in as it says it is, the 7’s cabin should feel pretty solid. We’re hoping the materials, functionality and space on offer (there’s a lot of that last one) should make up for any residual disappointment potentially generated by those me-too looks.

We’ll see the DS 7 in the metal, again, at next week’s Geneva Motor Show.

DS 7 Crossback makes public debut - with French president on board

New French president Emmanuel Macron driven to inauguration in special edition DS 7 Crossback, featuring opening roof, gold detailed 20in wheels, flag holders and ‘Black Art’ leather interior

The DS 7 Crossback had its first public outing yesterday - with new French president Emmanuel Macron on board at his inauguration on Sunday.

As the long-standing car manufacturer of choice amongst French presidents, DS created a specially modified version for the new president's traditional drive down the Champ Elysees during his inauguration ceremony.

The brand’s first SUV for the European market was unveiled at this year’s Geneva motor show. A team of DS engineers and craftsmen worked for seven months to create the Presidential DS 7 Crossback. The uniquely spec’d model boasts custom-made opening roof to facilitate crowd waving, 20in gold detailed wheels, ‘Black Art interior’ and unique Ink Blue paint finish.

Customer deliveries of the DS 7 Crossback will begin in January 2018, but the closest you’ll get to Presidential is the high specification La Premiere which is Limited Edition and only available to order in 2017.

The Presidential DS 7 Crossback is currently displayed for the public at DS World, Paris.

Correction, he wasn't driven to the inauguration in the DS7 since he arrived in a Renault Espace http://www.caradisiac.com/passation...ult-espace-hollande-repart-en-ds-5-114300.htm

After the inauguration and as it is the tradition, he got up the Champs Elysées in a Renault military vehicle. http://m.huffingtonpost.fr/2017/05/...l-macron-na-pas-change-de-voiture_a_22085633/

And then he got back to the presidential palace in a DS7 Crossback.

However, it's not Macron's official car since it is now displayed at the DS showroom. Apparently it's considered too small to be the presidential car, French journalists speculate on the Talisman or Koleos.

2017 DS 7 Crossback on sale in La Premiere edition from £42,650

The 7 Crossback SUV advances DS’s upmarket push with new technology and a premium design; top trim model kicks off sales

The DS 7 Crossback, the French brand's first European-market SUV, is on sale now exclusively in limited edition La Première guise.

The model, which is priced from £42,650 and was previewed with a special Presidential version used by new French president Emmanuel Macron, and comes with all of the 7 Crossback's highest-spec features.

It's the only model that customers can buy at the moment and will go off sale on 31 December. The rest of the range (an example of which is pictured below) is due on sale later this year, priced from less than £30,000.

The La Première's extended list of features includes 20in alloy wheels, a 12in instrument display and a 12in infotainment touchscreen and dark red Nappa leather upholstery, and it comes in just three colours: Cumulus Grey metallic, Pearl White or Perla Nera Black.

It gets DS's latest driver assist systems including lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control and adaptive headlights.

DS's active suspension scanning system is also fitted as standard; it uses a high-mounted camera near the top of the car's windscreen to ‘read’ the surface of the road as it approaches, pre-setting the stiffness of the electronically variable dampers (which will be also be standard on other high trim versions) to prepare for larger bumps and compressions as they arrive.

DS claims Active Scan will be a segment first, although Mercedes-Benz does already offers a similar Magic Body Control system on its pricier models.

The most potent petrol and diesel engines are offered with the La Première. Both are turbocharged 1.6-litres, offering 221bhp and 178bhp respectively. They come mated to a new eight-speed automatic transmission.

When the rest of the range goes on sale, a wider selection of powertrains will be offered with the DS 7. Added to the aforementioned units will be a 128bhp 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol and the 1.6-litre petrol in 178bhp guise. A new ultra-frugal 1.5-litre diesel engine, named DVR, will be the second diesel option.

The 1.5 diesel and 1.2 petrol will have a six-speed manual gearbox. All other engines will come with the eight-speed 'box, which will also be an option on the 1.5 diesel.

For now the DS 7 will be offered with front-wheel-drive only. PSA engineers have confirmed that there are no plans for a four-wheel-drive 7 Crossback with a mechanical system.

The only model with a powered rear end will be the range-topping hybrid version, which is due to arrive a year after the rest of the range, in 2019. This hybrid model will have two 107bhp electric motors working in conjunction with a 197bhp version of the 1.6-litre turbo petrol, giving a total output of 296bhp.

DS says all models (not just the La Première) will have upmarket materials in their interiors, as well as potential for customisation that’s unprecedented for a PSA car. The amount of passenger space in the 7 Crossback is generous in both the front and rear, and plusher versions are set to get electrically tilting rear seats.

DS is keen to market the 7 Crossback as a technology leader, so even the entry-level version will get active LED headlights with three powered moving elements. These turn to give a ‘welcoming animation’ as the car is unlocked and allow different lighting modes, with longer-range beam projection at higher speeds and corner illumination (something Citroën effectively invented on its DS saloon in 1967).

Elaborate tail-lights, each with 42 LEDs, will also be standard and an infrared-based night vision system capable of identifying pedestrians and animals will be offered as an option. DS has also confirmed plans to offer the 7 Crossback with a semi-autonomous Connected Pilot driving system. A state-of-the-art Focal Electra audio system will be on offer, too.

Six new DS models planned by 2023

Plug-in hybrid DS 7 Crossback E-Tense is the first car in the brand's product offensive, with plans for 33% of total sales to be electrified by 2025

DS will launch one model a year until at least 2023, with a target of 33% of sales to be hybrids or electric vehicles by the middle of the next decade.

Each of the six confirmed models will have an electrified version, which the brand claims will benefit from its EV know-how honed in its involvement in the Formula E championship.

The first of these is the recently revealed DS 7 Crossback - the brand’s answer to the BMW X3 - which will get an E-Tense petrol-electric plug-in hybrid variant with 296bhp and an electric-only range of 60 miles. The E-Tense will get an eight-speed automatic 'box, and will be available from spring 2019.

There’s no cap on where the brand’s one-model-per-year strategy will end, but six models are planned at the moment. More will come later.

The six confirmed launches will be a mixture of all-new market entries for the brand, as well as replacements for existing models. Some of these will be indirect replacements, explained a DS spokesman, where the model name would be carried over, but the car would be different to its predecessor, and wouldn’t necessarily occupy the same market.

Despite the high power output of the DS 7 Crossback E-Tense and subsequent plug-in hybrid models, the DS Performance badge will not be discontinued; the two will coexist. It’s not yet known if the Performance badge will spread to larger models than the brand’s entry-level DS 3, though.

The use of the E-Tense name for variants on more mass-market friendly models somewhat undermines the possibility of an E-Tense supercar under the brand; the spokesman said that such a model is not a priority, but didn’t rule out the now more distant possibility of a halo car in the future.

Promoted: Introducing the DS 7 Crossback La Premiere

Standout styling, advanced technology and painstaking detail, effortlessly blending with unique, original design

The French invented the term avant garde to describe new, experimental ideas in modern culture.

In the La Premiere Limited Edition of its upcoming DS 7 Crossback premium SUV, Paris-born DS Automobiles is reviving the shamelessly opulent avant garde tradition of French ‘grande luxe’ motoring.

Standout styling, advanced technology and painstaking detail effortlessly blend with unique, original design. Rotating headlamps, night vision and two 12in HD touchscreens sit comfortably with a revolving dash-mounted BRM R180 timepiece and Art Rubis-coloured Nappa leather.

Early reservations are being taken now, but you’ll have to wait until March 2018 for your personal presentation. Like all the best things from France, it will surely be worth the wait.

PSA Group semi-autonomous cars arrive this year; full autonomy in 2020

The PSA Group has revealed details of its autonomous vehicle technology plans for the next decade and beyond

The PSA Group’s first fully-autonomous cars will reach market in 2020, after semi-autonomous systems are offered on the DS 7 Crossback next year.

The first PSA car with ‘hands-off’ Level 2 autonomous system will be the DS 7 Crossback SUV, which is due for launch early in 2018. The Citroën C5 Aircross will follow suit in the second half of 2018 after launching in China at the end of this year.

Equipped with a Level 2 system called Connected Pilot, the 7 Crossback will be capable of maintaining lane and choosing station to the left or right of the lane to allow cycles or motorcycles to pass. It will also be equipped with self-parking without any intervention by the driver, initiated by pressing a button on the centre console. This is in addition and to a suite of the usual advanced driver assistance systems.

PSA will phase in Level 3 ‘eyes-off’ autonomous cars from 2020, with two systems called Traffic Jam Chauffeur and Highway Chauffeur. PSA has a fleet of 12 prototypes most of which are Level 3 Citroën C4 Picassos and Peugeot 3008 GTs with automatic transmissions.

PSA is the first company licensed to drive autonomous cars on French roads, provided they have special registration plates to identify them. The company plans to phase in fully autonomous Level 4 ‘mind-off’ cars from 2025 with Level 5, completely driverless cars beyond 2030.

The Peugeot 3008 GT Autocar sampled from the passenger seat was equipped with five cameras, five lidar sensors, four short-range radar sensors and three log range radar sensors, giving 360deg coverage around the car. The 3008 was able to cope with busy motorway traffic, overtaking and moving back into lane, keeping station behind other vehicles and braking to maintain distances even when traffic came to a halt.

In production, cars will only allow hands-free autonomous driving on designated sections of roads free of pedestrians and cyclists, which it identifies through its embedded mapping system. The car handed back control to the driver at the end of the motorway, warning the driver with audio and visual prompts and braking if the driver didn’t respond within 10sec.

PSA's autonomous car programme is being launched under the banner of Autonomous Vehicles For All. The company plans to eventually roll out autonomous features on all cars across its three brands starting with the premium models that are based on the larger EMP2 platform, such as the 7 Crossback. Eventually, the technology will filter down to smaller cars on the new CMP platform due next year. Trials began in March 2017 with non-expert drivers, to gauge the reaction of customers to the technology.

DS’s timing is on par with rivals such as Audi, whose A8 flagship saloon, due for reveal next month, will feature hands-off driving capability. Audi is also working with tech company Nvidia to bring a fully autonomous car to market in 2020 - the same timescale as DS.

PSA says the the legal framework in Europe still need to evolve to support fully autonomous cars. Today, the Vienna Convention supports Level 1 and 2 cars, but Levels 3, 4 and 5 will require changes to the law to be allowed on the roads.

Legal and insurance liability is also under scrutiny. Under the current framework, drivers are responsible in the event of an accident, even if the car is in a hands-off or eyes-off autonomous mode at the time.
