Hyundai's new 3-Series rival. Looks smart.

Genesis G70

A new era dawned as Genesis officially presented the highly anticipated Genesis G70 luxury performance sedan at the Hyundai·Genesis Design Center in Namyang.

Dr. Woong-Chul Yang, Vice Chairman of the Hyundai Motor Group's R&D Division, key Genesis brand officials, and approximately 300 international automotive journalists participated in the activities. The G70 goes on sale in Korea on September 20th, with timing for its rollout in other markets to be announced soon.

"The Genesis G70 is the latest demonstration of our dedication to delivering innovative, customer-oriented vehicles," said Vice Chairman Yang. "We will continue to focus our R&D efforts on the development and expansion of the Genesis brand. It is a great point of pride to have Genesis showcase what a true luxury brand of Korean origin can present to our discerning customers."

The Genesis G70 is an athletic sedan characterized by its graceful and dynamic exterior styling; elegant and intuitively designed interior; choice of three different powertrains. Customers will be able to select between a turbocharged 3.3-liter gasoline V6, a 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline I4, and a 2.2-liter I4 diesel models.

The Genesis G70 also incorporates numerous advanced driver assist systems such as Highway Driving Assist (HDA), best-in-class safety with nine standard airbags and active hood function, and a high level of connectivity with server-based voice recognition technology, using Kakao Corp's artificial intelligence platform.

Hot stamping methods and extended use of structural adhesives have been employed to enhance torsional rigidity and improve overall body stiffness.

"G70 Seoul 2017"

To commemorate this important moment, 15,000 people will celebrate the official unveiling of the G70 at "G70·Seoul 2017," a global launch festival held on September 15th, 2017 in Seoul's Olympic Park.

"The launch of the Genesis G70 is an important milestone for our brand," said Manfred Fitzgerald, Head of Genesis Division. "We deliberately chose Seoul, as this is our place of origin. This is where we are coming together with our customers and friends in the music industry to celebrate as a people's festival."

"G70 Seoul 2017" is a brand celebration of Genesis and the new G70, featuring global music superstars Gwen Stefani, Andra Day and CL. While attendance is capped at 15,000, more than 80,000 people expressed interest in being part of the festivities.

Completing the Genesis sedan lineup

The G70 completes the Genesis brand's sedan lineup, along with the G90 flagship and mid-luxury G80. The arrival of G70 further strengthens the Genesis brand's presence in the global luxury market.

In November 2015, Genesis launched and set out to compete with the world's top luxury automakers as a Korean brand. To differentiate itself in the luxury segment, Genesis strives to make a positive impact in the lifestyles of its discerning customers through a progressive and innovative approach to performance and design excellence.

Genesis launched the flagship G90 sedan in December 2015, followed by the G80 sedan in July 2016 in Korea. Since the brand's inception, Genesis has sold more than 150,000 units, with strong performances in both Korea and the U.S.

Genesis has also received many accolades, most recently, ranking highest among premium automakers in the J.D. Power 2017 U.S. Initial Quality Study (IQS), topping all 13 brands in the premium segment.

The Genesis G70 marks the completion of Genesis sedan line-up and the brand will now start strengthening its lineup with SUVs and alternative powertrains. Genesis plans to roll out new products to expand its presence and coverage across the global market and six models are expected in its product portfolio by 2021.

Driving Character -- Agile Yet Safe, Dynamic Yet Quiet

The Genesis G70 offers three powertrains - a 3.3-liter V6 gasoline turbo, 2.0-liter I4 gasoline turbo and a 2.2-liter I4 diesel. The 3.3-liter V6 turbo is the backbone of the enthusiast-focused "G70 Sport."

The Genesis G70 Sport is equipped with the Lambda II 3.3-liter V6 turbo GDI engine, with 370 PS and maximum torque of 52.0kgf·m.

Genesis G70 Sport is a dynamic and powerful performer with 0 to 100 kph (62.5 mph) acceleration in 4.7 seconds and a top speed of 270 kph (167/168 mph). Variable-ratio steering and electronically controlled suspension are standard to provide agile steering response and an optimal ride-and-handling experience.

The Genesis G70 2.0 turbo gasoline model is equipped with the Theta-II 2.0-liter turbo GDI engine, with 252 PS and maximum torque of 36.0kgf·m. (Sports package: 255 PS)

The Genesis G70 2.2 diesel model is equipped with the R 2.2 VGT engine with 202 PS horsepower and maximum torque of 45.0kgf·m.

Hyundai's 3 Series rival unveiled: meet Genesis G70...

Hyundai has officially taken the wraps off its new Genesis G70 saloon, with the Korean automaker describing it as a “luxury performance sedan”.

Set to go on sale in Korea later this month – with planned introductions to other markets (with North America, Russia and the Middle East already confirmed) to be announced at a later stage – the G70 is essentially the automaker’s take on a competitor for the likes of the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class.

It slots in below the G80 sedan and G90 flagship, measuring 4 685 mm long with a wheelbase of 2 835 mm (for the sake of comparison, the 3 Series is 4 633 mm long with some 2 810 mm between its axles).

There will be a choice of three powertrains: a 3,3-litre turbocharged V6 petrol engine, a 2,0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder (185 kW/353 N.m) petrol unit and a 2,2-litre turbodiesel four-pot (149 kW/441 N.m).

The range-topping G70 Sport employs the 272 kW/510 N.m V6 (yes, the same unit used by the hottest Kia Stinger), which Hyundai’s luxury division says is capable of seeing off the obligatory 0-100 km/h sprint in 4,7 seconds, before topping out at 270 km/h. Interestingly, that’s two-tenths quicker than the Stinger.

Genesis says the G70 will boast “numerous advanced driver assist systems” along with “best-in-class safety”, including as many as nine airbags as standard.

Hyundai targets 3 Series with new Genesis G70

Nowhere in its press material does Hyundai mention blue propellers, but a quick look at the engine line-up of its new premium-brand Genesis G70 will tell you it’s aimed at BMW’s 3 Series.

When it goes on sale in Korea next Wednesday, alongside the bigger G90 and G80, customers will be able to choose from a two-litre turbopetrol four rated at 185kW and 350Nm, a 2.2-litre turbodiesel four (148kW and 441Nm) and the G70 Sport with a 3.3-litre turbopetrol V6 kicking out a claimed 272kW and 510Nm, good for a 0-100 launch in 4.7 seconds and 270km/h flat out.

Performance features across the range include rack-mounted, motor-driven power steering, multi-link rear suspension, dynamic torque vectoring and a mechanical limited-slip differential; the Sport the Sport comes with variable-ratio steering and electronically controlled suspension as standard.

The G70’s interpretation of Genesis design language gives it a bold if somewhat clumsy front treatment with prominent LED daytime running lights, but the rest of it is pure ‘power sedan’, with a long bonnet, short front overhang and cabin set well back over a longer rear overhang. The rear treatment is well tucked in with full-LED lighting and, in our eyes at least, more successful than the front.

Cabin trim is distinctly upmarket with aluminum door handles, a leather-trimmed sports steering wheel, quilted leather door panels, metal speaker grills and luxurious soft-touch surfaces and quilted nappa leather sports seats.

It’s available in black, grey, dark red, brown and beige, with two additional options - dark grey and bright red - offered only on the G70 Sport and the highest trim level in the two-litre turbopetrol variant.

A posture control system - first seen in the G90 - uses your body information (which you input; no cheating, now!) to automatically adjust the seat, steering wheel, outside mirror and heads-up display to the optimal position for comfort and minimum stress.

The flight-deck layout is focused on simplicity and intuitive functionality, including an 20cm touchscreen display supporting MirrorLink, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and server-based voice recognition using a new Kakao artificial intelligence platform.

The driver aids package includes semi-autonomous highway driving assist, launch control, a forward collision avoidance system that recognises cyclists as well as pedestrians, blind spot monitoring and driver awareness warning.

Product specifications for export markets including North America, Russia and the Middle East will be announced in early 2018; G90 and G80 are already sold in the United States, where Genesis topped the premium segment in the 2017 JD Power initial quality survey.

Genesis also plans to widen its range with SUVs and alternative powertrains; six new models are expected to join the lineup by 2021.

Genesis G70 rear-wheel-drive saloon guns for luxury German brands

Korean rival to Mercedes-Benz C-Class should make it to Britain by 2021

Genesis has unveiled its latest model, the G70, in a move that will see Hyundai's nascent upmarket brand further challenge Audi, BMW, Infiniti, Jaguar, Lexus and Mercedes-Benz for premium sales in selected markets from late 2017.

But while the UK will initially be denied the distinctively styled saloon, Autocar can confirm that Genesis is working to introduce various models to European markets, including the UK, by the end of 2021.

“We’re aware of the potential of the UK market, but the focus right now is further establishing the Genesis brand in Korea, the US and China. Our longer-term strategy calls for Genesis to be present in Europe, but it will take a little time before we are ready,” says Soo Kim, head of product planning for the G70.

Conceived as a direct competitor to the A4, 3 Series, Q50, XE, IS and C-Class, the G70 will offer three turbocharged engines when sales begin, including a headlining 3.3-litre V6 petrol and a 2.0-litre four-cylinder direct-injection petrol unit, as well as a 2.2-litre four-cylinder common rail diesel, in both rear and four-wheel drive.

Revealed at a media presentation held in the Korean car maker’s new design studio at its Namyang research and development centre on the outskirts of Seoul, the G70 rides on a newly developed rear-wheel-drive platform, elements of which are shared with the recently introduced Kia Stinger.

In range-topping 3.3-litre V6 petrol guise, which produces 365bhp and 383lb ft of torque, the four-wheel-drive G70 Sport AWD is claimed to outperform the highly regarded BMW 340i xDrive for straight-line speed, with an official 0-62mph time of 4.7sec and a 168mph top speed. The engine channels its power through a standard eight-speed torque converter equipped automatic gearbox.

By comparison, the 340i xDrive uses a turbocharged 3.0-litre in-line six-cylinder petrol engine with 321bhp and 332lb ft of torque. It also uses an eight-speed automatic for an official 0-62mph time of 4.9sec and limited 155mph top speed.

The turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder delivers 252bhp and 265lb ft in standard guise and a more powerful 255bhp with the same 265lb ft when combined with an optional Sport Package – the latter being 3bhp and 7lb ft more than the similar-sized turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol used by the 320i.

Also available in selected markets is a turbocharged 2.2-litre four-cylinder common rail diesel engine. With 202bhp and 332lb ft, it outpunches the smaller turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder common rail diesel used by the BMW 320d by 12bhp and 37lb ft.

However, Genesis boss Manfred Fitzgerald insists the focus for the new model is less about all-out performance and more about delivering first-class customer satisfaction. “Ever since we launched the Genesis brand, we have continued to seek innovation. We want to lead the market as a latecomer; we are working to ensure Genensis’ competitive edge in safety, design, technology and comfort,” he says.

Fitzgerald’s comments are backed up by the latest JD Power Initial Quality Study, which put Genesis at the top of 13 brands in the premium segment.

At 4685mm in length, 1850mm in width and 1400mm in height, the latest Genesis model is 61mm longer, 39mm wider and 31mm lower than the 3 Series sedan.

The G70 also receives a wheelbase that is 25mm longer than its key BMW rival at 2835mm. Buyers can choose between standard rear-wheel drive or optional four-wheel drive, with each of the three engines on offer in the domestic South Korean market.

Like all its key premium rivals, the new Genesis model uses a multi-link rear suspension. It is allied to a mechanical limited-slip differential and, in four-wheel-drive versions, a torque vectoring function. Genesis claims a front-to-rear weight distribution of 50/50.

Genesis is out to disrupt the premium brand status quo with a string of new models planned for launch by 2021. Along with the G70, G80 and G90, the brand is also readying a range of SUV models, the first of which was previewed by the GV80 concept at the New York motor show in April. It is planned to form a three-strong line-up of SUVs that will be followed by the upcoming GV70 and GV90.

While the existing G80 and G90 were conceived within Hyundai’s traditional research and development structure, the G70 is the first to reflect design and engineering input from a hand-picked team, including ex-Bentley design boss Luc Donckerwolke and former BMW M lead engineer Albert Biermann, working under a separate Genesis structure.

Speaking at the unveiling of the G70, vice-chairman of Hyundai Motor Group R&D division Woong-Chul Yang said: “We will continue to focus our efforts on the development and expansion of the Genesis brand.”

Since the introduction of its initial model, the G90, in December 2015 and the launch of its second, the G80, in July 2016, Genesis has sold more than 150,000 cars in both South Korea and the US.

BMW, MERCEDES FOCUS ON ‘STUPID’ TECH – HYUNDAI EXEC

The head of Hyundai’s N division and performance boss of the Genesis luxury sub-brand has called out BMW and Mercedes-Benz for building hype around their vehicles by including “stupid” technology.

Albert Biermann, who headed up BMW’s M division before switching to the Korean automaker, told Drive that much of the complicated technology used in modern German vehicles was included simply for the sake of marketing.

“It’s all marketing, first of all. How many people really buy it later on? Much of this exists for media, to give a hype, to show the technology level. But how many people really buy it later on? If the tech will fail, you’re just adding the burden to the buyer, right?” Biermann said, according to the Australian publication.

Biermann, who made the comments to Drive at the recent launch of the Genesis G70 sedan, made an example using the G90 saloon, which competes against the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and BMW 7 Series in the United States.

“If I want to sell a G90 to a US customer, there are other OEMs that show their flagship car on the racetrack. The car in the luxury car segment, they show all the racetrack talent, but which 2,2-tonne luxury segment car will ever see the racetrack?

“We don’t do this kind of stuff. We work for the customer first of all, and not so much for the media. Of course, we do some stuff for the media, but first of all we do that stuff for the customer, that we think has reasonable value for the money,” he said.

“In our G90, you will not find any air suspension or active roll-bars or active whatever. A camera sensing the road, and this stuff? It’s stupid. We have a solid Hyundai steel platform, tonnes of high-strength steel – okay, it’s a little bit heavier than the other cars – and we have adjustable shock absorbers, and that’s it.

“We still outpace the S-Class in the double-lane-change in the Consumer Reports [test]. We almost beat the BMW, without all the fancy stuff,” Biermann added.

The German, who is based at Namyang in Korea, went on to claim that Hyundai’s testing procedure was also more rigorous than those of its Teutonic rivals.

“Our testing is much more intense. We have 30 000 km test driving in Namyang, with all the bad cobblestones and potholes you cannot imagine. We run our cars there for 30 000 km, and then on top of that we do 10 000 km at the Nürburgring.

“I don’t think anyone else is doing that anymore – maybe Porsche or Ferrari, but all the other guys they’ve stepped down from 10 000 km to 8 000 km or 5 000 km. And some, they do nothing anymore.”

Genesis G70 AWD 2017 review

Should I buy one?

If Genesis is serious about mixing it with the premium class competition in the UK – and all indications suggest that it is - it could do no worse than to build on this American G70 model with a test programme in Britain to integrate changes that would make the saloon suit our conditions better and improve on what it already has to offer.

The G70 shows real promise in many key areas, although I suspect it is still some way from revealing its true ability. All the ingredients required to make it a convincing rival to established contenders are in place. As it stands, it is good enough to worry the likes of Audi, BMW, Jaguar, Infiniti, Lexus and Mercedes-Benz.

The real test will come when Genesis unleashes European specification models in the UK. With a little-known name, it’s going to be a hard sell. But, at the right price, it could very well upset the status quo.

HYUNDAI LURES ANOTHER TOP ENGINEER FROM BMW

The Hyundai Motor group has announced the appointment of Fayez Abdul Rahman as vice president of Genesis architecture development, luring the high-ranking engineer from his position at BMW.

The 58-year-old German national joins former BMW M boss Albert Biermann at the Korean automaker, with the latter currently heading up the brand’s vehicle test and high-performance development division.

In a statement, Hyundai said that Rahman would “lead planning for vehicle specification and performance from the earliest stages of vehicle development”.

His initial focus? Enhancing “performance and quality” for Genesis models, although the automaker added that his development processes would “gradually be applied” to other Hyundai vehicles, “enabling them to directly compete with Europe’s leading premium car manufacturers”.

At BMW, Rahman led concept and platform development for models such as the 7 Series, various X-badged SUVs and even high-performance M vehicles.

“I am very excited to be a part of this dynamic organisation and am impressed by the remarkable progress made by Hyundai Motor Group over the past decade. We want to develop a flexible and future-oriented vehicle architecture that is unique to Hyundai Motor Group, to secure competitiveness, especially in the areas of vehicle performance and quality,” said Rahman.
