Genesis Gave the G70 a Manual Transmission Even Though It Knew Barely Anybody Would Buy One

When it comes to new vehicles with manual transmissions, at least in this bleak segment of the global car market we call America, things aren’t great—even the holdouts are shedding their third pedals, and barren sales justify it. But Genesis knew its manual G70 sedan would barely sell, and brought it here anyway.

CarBuzz wrote on Thursday that, in the spirit of the trend of asking automakers their (often low) percentage of manual sales recently, it also asked Genesis how many of its G70 luxury sport sedans get purchased with numbers on the shifter instead of letters. Genesis told CarBuzz manual sales are low, basically:

The manual transmission actually comes as its own trim level, which also includes a limited-slip differential, summer tires, and Brembo brakes. With the manual, the G70 takes 6.6 seconds to reach 60 mph, which is brisk but not rapid.

Speaking to CarBuzz, Genesis Senior Group Manager Kevin Smith said, “looking at just the portion of manual sales across our G70 2.0T variants, because the manual is not available on our 3.3T variants, the 2019 year-to-date manual sales percentage is 4%.”

The 2019 G70 has two engine options that both come with either rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive: a turbocharged, 2.0-liter four-cylinder that makes a rated 252 horsepower, along with a 365-HP turbocharged V6—but only offers a manual on the RWD four-cylinder. That’s why, the Genesis representative said, the 4-percent sales numbers are only in regards to its four-cylinder option.

New Genesis G70 estate tests ahead of brand's Europe launch

Hyundai's luxury arm is adding a Shooting Brake version of its BMW 3 Series rival, which could come to UK

Hyundai’s luxury brand, Genesis, is testing a new estate version of its G70 executive saloon on European roads ahead of the brand’s long-awaited debut in the region.

The G70 was launched in its current form in 2017 as a rival to the Audi A4 and BMW 3 Series and will gain a new Shooting Brake version as part of its facelift next year.

This sighting suggests that the G70 will be one of the first Genesis models to be sold in Europe when the brand expands outside of its current Asian, Russian and US markets.

The current G70 is available with a choice of either a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine, a 2.2-litre diesel or a 3.3-litre 365bhp twin-turbocharged petrol V6, as used in the Kia Stinger GT S performance fastback.

Why Are There So Many Used Red Genesis G70s With Under 100 Miles?

As Jalopnik’s resident car buying expert and professional car shopper, I get emails. Lots of emails. I’ve decided to pick a few questions and try to help out. This week we are discussing the strange number of used ultra-low-mile, red G70s, and the best strategy to think about buying or leasing a car while the pandemic impacts the markets.

First, what’s up with all these used, red Genesis G70s with hardly any miles on them?

I was looking at used Genesis G70's on AutoTrader. I noticed (very obvious) that there are a lot of G70's listed as “red, used, and 30-70 miles”. Those listings also have no pictures. What gives? Are these scams or is a ship load of red cars being sold off?

These are no scams. I actually encountered this situation with a customer who was shopping for a new G70 and was getting frustrated at the lack of responsiveness and deals on the new models. Like you, I found a used red one with surprisingly low miles. According to the dealership, there was a defect with the red paint and Genesis bought back a large number of red cars. The paint was fixed at the factory then the cars were wholesaled back to the dealerships so they can be resold as used models. A number of these cars are even Genesis Certified, and the one my client bought even retained the concierge-style service.

A quick look at Autotrader, reveals about 50 red Genesis units with under 100 miles on them. I would say these cars are pretty excellent values as you get essentially a new car with substantial savings off the MSRP and possibly a longer warranty.

Redesigned Genesis G70 unveiled with new look and tech upgrade

Jaguar XE rival shown ahead of Korean sales starting next month; brand's European debut expected soon

The Hyundai Group’s luxury brand, Genesis, has updated its smallest model, the G70 saloon, with an substantial visual redesign and technology enhancements.

It comes as bosses prepare for an imminent (but still unconfirmed) introduction into select European markets, expected to include the UK.

The G70, a direct competitor to the Audi A4 and BMW 3 Series, made its debut in the US in 2017 and has now undergone a mid-life redesign. External tweaks are most significant at the front end, where a new hexagonal grille combines with slim LED quad-headlight strips, replacing more conventional clusters.

Furthering the “athletic” visual overhaul is a new side profile in which the L-shaped chrome wing trim is replaced by a more purposeful air duct closer to the front wheel.

At the rear, the single-unit lights are replaced by two LED strips on either side, mirroring the front. A new combination mesh-and-body-colour diffuser-style rear bumper completes the overhaul, along with new wheel designs.

The Manual Genesis G70 Sedan That Almost Broke Jalopnik

Genesis recently announced that it would cease production and sale of its Genesis G70 compact luxury sedan equipped with a manual transmission due to poor sales. Considering this is a car that was highly championed by this website and its audience, it’s only right we try to learn something from its failure.

Full disclosure: Last year, Jalopnik received a Genesis G70 with a six-speed manual transmission to review during our stay in Detroit for the local auto show. I think four of us ended up driving it, none of us for any substantial amount of time, and after two meetings and three partially-drafted reviews, we gave up on publishing about the car. At least until now.

Why? Well, we’d already written about it, for one. But also, I think because it’s just impossible to categorize it in a modern context. In a world so pointed towards automation, speeding things up and simplifying experiences, Genesis was pitching us all a car from a different age.

We all may be nostalgic for a time when many regular sedans came equipped with a stick because manual cars were cheaper, or perceived to be more efficient, and simply just more common decades ago. If you wanted an automatic transmission, something far more complicated involving computers and more electronics and higher reliability risk, you also had to pay more money. It was a luxury, and marketing it that way made the feature very desirable. Technology has naturally progressed away from human dependency and toward automation.

Think about it: In an older sedan with a manual, you would not have had a GPS informing you exactly how long your route would take, and the density of the traffic on the way there. You wouldn’t have that comfort. You may not have even had air conditioning.

Genesis G70

Genesis debuted the new G70, which updates the award-winning sport sedan with a fresh design and enriched technology. These changes further align G70's visual signature with the latest iteration of the brand's "Athletic Elegance" design language, as seen on the all-new G80 sedan and first-ever GV80 SUV. Likewise, the new Genesis G70 benefits from the incorporation of the brand's latest advanced-safety and driver-assistance technology, further elevating the ownership experience.

Comprehensive Style Update for the Most Athletic Genesis Sports Sedan

The most athletic sports sedan offered by Genesis, the award winning G70 receives a performance and styling update.

Up front, the new Genesis G70 gains the brand's signature Quad Lamps, featuring super thin LED lamps which stretch outward like the wings of the Genesis emblem. The low-slung Crest Grille evokes an aggressive stance that emphasizes the G70's performance character.

Viewed from the side, the new G70's profile retains the familiar long hood and short front overhang, communicating its agility even when parked. Four all-new wheel designs further enhance its presence, and a new air extractor positioned aft of the front wheel designed to optimize airflow efficiency. The Parabolic Line adds an elegant touch over the muscular surfaces, just a like a tailored suit for a world class athlete.

At the rear, Genesis' signature Quad Lamp taillights and prominent Genesis text over the clean of the surface of the trunk lid shows an unmistakable Genesis identity. Dual exhaust tips and a body-colored diffuser add the finishing touches to the sport sedan's updates.
