2018 Lexus NX

Lexus NX review

WHAT'S THE VERDICT?

“Lexus presents a hybrid alternative to the standard premium-crossover fare”

This NX is a solid cash cow for Lexus, so it’s going to be more of the same from a brand-new version. Hence the smooth evolution. And it’s a successful one, too – the car provides a suave alternative to the usual fare and helps Lexus to stop haemorrhaging company car sales to other carmakers offering bigger-batteried plug-ins. The full-hybrid or PHEV drive definitely saves fuel and tax, but does still make an odd noise. And the NX is still an SUV, so forgive us if we don’t get too excited.

Hybrid derivatives added to the range in May 2022

The freshly added hybrid derivatives are the NX 350h EX, NX 350h SE and NX 350h F Sport. The latest hybrid arrangement is build around Toyota’s familiar naturally aspirated 2.5-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine. With the help of an electric motor, total system power is pegged at 179 kW.

Lexus claims a combined fuel consumption figure of 5.0 L/100 km, along with a 0-100 kph sprint time of 7.7 seconds and a top speed of 200 kph. The company says the hybrid system design has been “improved” thanks to a new front transaxle and a compact lithium-ion battery.

Lexus NX In-Depth Review 2022 - Most Refined Hybrid SUV? - OSV

With this second generation NX, Lexus has brought us a strikingly styled premium mid-sized SUV that's unafraid to go its own way when it comes to cars of this kind.

It's still one of the only models in its class that can't be ordered in diesel form, offering instead a beautifully refined and highly efficient petrol/electric hybrid powertrain, now available in PHEV Plug-in as well as self-charging forms.

If you're choosing in this segment, most of the magazines will tell you to buy something German. But if this revitalised NX appeals, you may well feel that you know better. And you could be right.

The 2022 Lexus NX450h+ Is a Good, But Expensive Bridge to Electrification

Lexus’ plug-in hybrid crossover is great for people not yet ready for a full EV. But its high price may make it hard to justify.

Verdict

The NX450h+ is an impressive plug-in effort from a company known for its hybrid excellence. But it may end up being a tough sell to some. For starters, the NX450h+ isn’t cheap. While a regular NX250 starts at a rather reasonable $38,850, you’re looking at well-equipped RX money for the 450h Plus: $57,705. With nearly every option box checked, including a $1,075 destination charge, my orange NX450h Plus costs $62,090.

Now, remember when I said that the NX is mechanically related to the RAV4? The NX450h+ uses the same drivetrain setup as the Toyota RAV4 Prime, which is over $15,000 cheaper. Yes, the Lexus is a little nicer inside, but that’s a big jump in price for effectively the same experience.

None of this is to say that the NX450h Plus is bad. It’s actually very good. But having to drop nearly $60,000 on a compact crossover just for the ability to drive 40 miles on electricity alone is a hard sell, especially when the exact same setup can be had for less money.

Sleek new Lexus NX lands in South Africa: pricing and specifications announced

The new-generation Lexus NX has landed on local shores, ushering in a new design language for the Japanese premium brand.

Buyers can choose from five derivatives, within three powertrain choices and they’re priced between R968 000 and R1 211 900 - see the full price list below.

Built around the Lexus Global Architecture (GA-K), the new NX boasts a 20mm-lower centre of gravity, while overall length grows by 20mm, with an additional 30mm going into the wheelbase, and width increases by 20mm.

Design-wise, Lexus took the new model in a more “mature” direction, with a subtler framed spindle grille, while the long bonnet, wheels of up to 20-inches and ‘blade’ taillights add a muscular demeanour.

Different as they are, new Lexus NX and LX both elevate the brand’s SUV game

Lexus recently gave us an opportunity to get behind the wheel of their new NX and LX models and as we’ve come to expect from the luxury brand, it’s all rather top notch.

The two models are on opposite ends of the scale and are a bit of a David and Goliath but provide owners a very pleasant driving experience each in its own way.

Both models have new engines under the bonnet and in the case of the LX the well-known 5.7-litre V8 has been replaced with twin turbocharged motors, one a petrol and the other a diesel, both producing more power than the mill they replace, and paired to a new 10-speed Direct Shift automatic transmission fitted with a new torque converter with a multi-plate lock-up clutch..
