The updated NX.

The Lexus NX was destined for success when it was introduced in 2014, for it offered crossover-luxury-vehicle customers exactly what they had long been desiring―a stylish and spacious compact with exciting driving dynamics and excellent fuel efficiency―but not even Lexus could have predicted that it would become a worldwide sensation: The Lexus NX dramatically outperformed sales forecasts in every one of its markets around the world, including North America, Europe and China. For the 2018 model, Lexus intends to keep the proverbial wheel rolling with an updated model that the brand introduced at the 2017 Shanghai Motor Show.

Bold New Exterior Styling Refinements

For the 2018 NX, Lexus designers thoroughly enhanced the design essence of the original model, which has garnered universal praise for being one of the best-looking vehicles in its segment. The entire front fascia of the new NX has been refreshed, with the upper portion of the grille and the front bumpers redesigned to more fluidly blend into the hood and front doors, resulting in a sleeker overall shape and excellent aerodynamics. The new NX's available AHS-equipped headlamps and triple projectors are similar to those equipped on the LC luxury coupe and help give the NX's face a sportier aura. Also of note, satin and smoked chrome trim elements have been applied to the grille treatment in addition to new vertical elements added to the grille's inner portion.

Lexus reveals updated NX ... and kills off 200t badge

Lexus has revealed the facelifted NX in Shanghai, dropping the 200t badge from its range.

But the turbocharged 2,0-litre four-cylinder mill remains and the NX300h, too, continues with its 2,5-litre petrol engine and pair of electric motors.

So, why has the NX200t badge has been killed off (in favour of the new NX300 moniker)? Well, Lexus says the “t” designation has been removed “because turbocharged engines have been adopted by other models” in its line-up, adding that it will be rolling out this change to other forced induction variants in the coming months.

The updated luxury crossover boasts a refreshed front facia, with new treatment for the upper portion of the grille and the front bumpers. Lexus says the facelifted NX’s headlamps and triple projectors are similar to those first seen on the LC coupé. In addition, satin and smoked chrome-effect trim elements have been applied to the grille, along with new vertical elements.

The foglamps have been relocated to the corners of the front bumpers, separating them from the ducts, and helping to bring about what Lexus describes as a more “aggressive presence”.

Round back, the lower rear bumper now involves elements of the grille’s spindle motif and has been suitably broadened. In addition, the NX’s revised taillamps have been elongated, and their black garnish revised. Larger chrome-tipped exhaust exits integrated into the vehicle’s revised bumper design also make an appearance, along with a new faux-diffuser design. Two new 18-inch alloy wheel designs have furthermore been added to the mix.

Inside, Toyota’s luxury arm says it has “slightly reworked” the cabin, adding a larger display and simplifying the HVAC control panel. Rear passengers will now be able to set the temperature in their own compartment via a switch on the rear console.

The (slightly enlarged) analogue clock features a simpler design than before and now includes satellite control, which automatically sets the time in different time zones. Lexus says that nearly all controls and switches inside the updated NX, including the drive mode selector, shift knob and door handles, now bear a metallic satin finish.

The controversial remote touch interface pad, meanwhile, has been enlarged and again redesigned, while the wireless charger tray has also grown in size to accommodate larger devices.

The automaker also reveals that both models now offer “a richer, sportier engine sound and exhaust note”, albeit reproduced through the speakers. The brand furthermore claims that “significant improvements” have been made to the vehicle’s suspension tuning to enhance ride and handling. Interestingly, the automaker’s adaptive variable suspension system has also been adopted.

Facelifted Lexus NX Shown in Shanghai

Lexus has shown a facelifted version of its sharply styled NX SUV in Shanghai. Here are the details.

The first Lexus SUV has come in for a refresh with Lexus stating that the SUV has sold incredibly well. So well, that it has outperformed sales targets in every market it was sold in. Sound promising, but sales targets must not have been very high in SA if that's the case.

Starting at the front, Lexus has reshaped the huge front grille slightly. The LED lighting signature has also been updated and has more visual appeal now. The rear bumper has been modified to provide a wider and lower visual appearance. The chrome tips of the exhaust are larger and are also housed within the new rear bumper design.

Improvements inside have been made to the infotainment screen, which has been enlarged from 7-inches to 10.3-inches. The controls of the system have also been simplified, so hopefully, this improves the usability of the system. Many of the touch surfaces of the interior now have a metallic satin finish that Lexus says, enhances the premium look and feel of the cabin.

Pandering to the tech savvy buyer, Lexus has enlarged the wireless charging dock to suit the modern Smartphone. The USB ports have been repositioned and the amperage has been increased so that device can be charged faster.

The engines remain the same with a 2.0-litre turbopetrol - which will now be called the NX 300 (ex 200t) and the 2.5-litre 4-cylinder hybrid unit that will remain the NX 300h. Lexus will be removing the 't' designation from its other models in the future.

Gains have been made in the suspension department to improve the ride and handling. The introduction of adaptive variable suspension is entirely new for the NX range and was first used on the LC 500 we drove in 2016.

Sound proofing and vibration deletion have always been a strong suit of Lexus' models and it appears to have made further improvements in this department with the NX.

The facelifted NX is set to go on sale later this year but local introduction dates are not available yet.

The 2017 Lexus NX200T Does Compact Luxury Right Even If It Isn't Fast

Verdict

The Lexus NX200T is a bit more than some trendy compact luxury crossover put on the market for affluent millennials to flaunt their recent social statuses.

Its quality, refinement, and luxury don’t take a hit to its more affordable pricing. Its radical “check me out” styling doesn’t hinder its cargo and occupant space too much, and it favors everyday comfort over acceleration times and levels of cornering grip – elements that make more sense in this segment.

Like the Toyota RAV4 on which it’s based, the 2017 Lexus NX 200T is boring and not all that inspiring to drive, but it works for the duties of your everyday lives and won’t do you shame when you’ll pull up to your next office cocktail party in one.

As far as this silly crossover trend goes, this one simply works

Refreshed Lexus NX arrives: Nip and tuck for urban SUV, more affordable 2WD for SA

Lexus has refreshed its NX in South Africa. The NX is available in a more affordable 2WD version with a saving of R24 000.

Did you know the Lexus headquarters in Japan houses 7700 employees of which 19 are takumi (master craftsman). These takumi (with about 25 years experience) must be able to fold an origami cat with their non-dominant hand in less than 90 seconds...

All Lexus models from 1989 to 2005 were marketed under Toyota until the brand finally came into its own.

The LS was the car which gave the company prominence in the luxury market and the NX was Lexus’ first foray into the compact premium SUV market.

The refreshed NX - which stands for nimble crossover - features an angular design language, with strong body lines and prominent contouring. Underpinned by the iconic Lexus spindle grille, the NX is a prominent member within the Lexus family, and is the automaker's best-selling vehicle even here in South Africa.

The 2017 NX has undergone some minor upgrades including cosmetic styling and some tweaking of its standard specification. The latest NX models are set to reach Lexus dealerships in January 2018.

New naming convention

Lexus says as part of the brand's global strategy, the ‘200t’ moniker (signifying a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine) has been replaced by ‘300’.

"The 300 badging bears reference to offering an equivalent power output to that of a 3.0-litre powerplant – this has been adopted to achieve parity between the petrol - and hybrid engine models’ badging convention," says Lexus.

The badging has been changed to NX 300 in E, EX and F Sport versions respectively.

Styling

All models in the range receive styling refinements, with new headlights, a bold new grille with a chromed frame, a redesigned side grille, bumper and lower bumper elements.

At the rear, there are new LED combination lights. The rear bumper and license plate garnish have also been tweaked to give the NX a more athletic stance.

So what's new in the range?

The entry E-grade model now adopts a 2WD drivetrain, delivering power to the front wheels via a 6-speed automatic transmission. The change to 2WD from AWD (all-wheel drive) brings with it, a reduction in fuel consumption and vehicle weight, as well as R24 000 cheaper compared to the entry-level model in the previous range.

The EX and F Sport derivatives retain the AWD configuration and 6-speed automatic transmissions.

The established 2.0-litre turbocharged ‘4-pot’ engine remains intact (on NX300 variations), delivering 175kW/350Nm between 1650 and 4000rpm.

Lexus reckons the engine utilises a combination of port – and direct injection (known as D-4ST) along with Variable Valve Timing intelligent Wide (VVTi-W), to optimise combustion in the pursuit of both power and efficiency.

The Hybrid-powered NX300h, uses a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor. The petrol plus electric coupling delivers a total system output of 150kW.

What's it like to drive?

I experienced the NX 300 on a rouete from King Shaka International Airport to Karkloof Safari Villas just outside Pietermaritzburg. I also drove the F Sport variant while returning to the airport.

Both cars are unbelievably comfortable behind the wheel, the major difference however are their respective kit.

If you're not careful, you'd think you're cruising along the highway at 60km/h when you're going at a steady 120km/h. Whether you're driving twisty bends, long distances on the highway or driving on the beaten track, the NX remains consistent in its performance and agility.

Even when in the NX E grade model, it comes standard with loads of bells and whistles such as a wireless charger, 6-way adjustable seats, back guide monitor and enough driver assistant systems.

The F Sport version adds heatable and ventilated seats, 18" sport wheels, 8-way seats, power tailgate, Lane chaange assist and blind spot monitor and a panaramic roof.

F Sport

In F Sport guise the spindle-grille frame is finished in a ‘black chrome’ effect which compliments the dark F-mesh grille.

The brushed-aluminium lower apron which runs the full length of the front, creates a sporty appearance with the graphite-coloured vent trim on the edges of the bumper accentuate the powerful stance and F Sport identity.

The F Sport features a Drive Mode Select with Eco, Normal, Sport, Sport + and newly-added Custom modes. Sport + interfaces with the Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) to increase dampening and allow for more dynamic handling.

The custom mode, says Lexus, allows drivers to personalise the powertrain, electric power steering, AVS and air conditioning settings.

Specifications

E-grade variants now feature rain-sensing wipers, auto-levelling headlights (halogen with LED daytime running lights) and a reverse camera (displayed in the infotainment system).

The mid-grade EX variants add on roof rails and the range-topping F Sport gets Dynamic headlight levelling, chrome steering switch accents, and aluminium detailing on the instrument cluster.

The inside door handle trim has been changed from silver to satin finish on all NX models.

A key feature is the new 10.3" display audio screen (previous 7") with enhanced graphics and clarity - employed on EX and F Sport models equipped with satnav. The NX interior overhaul saw special attention paid to the centre cluster, with the navigation display enlarged to 10.3", climate control panel refreshed and the number of switches reduced, for ease of operation.

Button design has been revised and the analogue clock redesigned with increased contrast between the hands and background for ease of viewing. The clock is now larger and linked to the GPS function.

Airconwitches have been grouped according to operations, while the overall panel layout has been made cleaner, by resizing the switches.

Safety

The NX comes standard with a total of eight airbags on all models. Active safety systems include ABS, EBD, Brake Assist, Traction Control, Enhanced VSC, Hill-start Assist and Trailer Sway Control.

The F Sport model adds on Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) and Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA).

What's coming in 2018?

Lexus SA says there'll be a new RX longwheel base version arriving next year along with the new generation LS 500. The LS is a vital car for the automaker and it looks forward to reigniting the spark which established the company.

There was also a hint of a brand new model which will be added to the model range later in 2018.

Warranty and Service

All Lexus NX models come with a 3-year or 100 000km warranty. E-grade versions receive a Lexus Distance Plan service plan, EX models - Distance Plan Plus (includes brake components) and F Sport – Distance Plan Complete (full maintenance plan).

In addition customers can upgrade or extend their service/maintenance plan packages via the Lexus dealer network.

Lexus SA updates NX and cuts range’s starting price

Lexus South Africa has announced pricing for its facelifted NX range – due to arrive in dealerships in January 2018 – with the base, front-wheel-drive derivative now some R31 600 cheaper than before.

Back in April, Toyota’s luxury division revealed the updated NX in Shanghai, giving the crossover new headlamps, a redesigned grille (now with a chrome frame) and refreshed front bumper elements. Round back, all models now benefit from new LED combination lamps, while the rear bumper and numberplate garnish have likewise been freshened up.

Lexus says it has also “refined” the NX’s suspension, while a new 10,3-inch display is available inside on EX and F Sport variants equipped with sat-nav.

As we have previously reported, Lexus is in the process of phasing out its “200t” badge (which signified the presence of a 2,0-litre turbocharged engine), replacing it with a simple “300” instead. The four-derivative local range thus now comprises the NX300 in E, EX and F Sport trim levels, along with the NX300h hybrid variant.

The base NX300 E employs an unchanged 2,0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, sending 175 kW with 350 N.m to the front wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission. The EX and F Sport derivatives, meanwhile, add all-wheel drive, while the hybrid-powered NX300h uses a 2,5-litre four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor.

While the base model is now cheaper, pricing for the NX300 EX and NX300h EX is unchanged. The F Sport variant, meanwhile, is R3 100 more expensive than before.

Pricing:

Lexus NX300 E: R599 900
Lexus NX300 EX: R677 300
Lexus NX300 F Sport: R789 700
Lexus NX300h EX: R746 700

Lexus NX gets sexy new looks, new kit, new names

Lexus’ NX compact SUV has been updated, botoxed, re-specced and renamed for 2018, adopting the German convention of naming the model, not according to actual engine capacity but to the capacity of a naturally aspirated engine that would produce about the same power.

Thus the NX200t becomes the NX300, since both the turbocharged two-litre variants (175kW and 350Nm from 1650-4000rpm) and the 2.5-litre petrol/electric hybrid version (150kW total) are comparable with a conventional three-litre petrol four.

There’s also a new front treatment with new headlight clusters, a chromed frame for the signature spindle grille, and a completely new front apron with revised air intakes and bumper.

On the F Sport the spindle frame is finished in black chrome to match the dark F-mesh grille, with dark grey vent trim and a full-width brushed aluminium-effect lower apron.

At the rear, all models get new LED tail-light clusters and revised bumpers.

Motorvation

More fundamentally, the base model NX200 E is now front-wheel drive only (via a six-speed automatic transmission) in search of reduced weight and lower fuel-consumption, while the EX and F Sport stay with all-wheel drive, also with six-speed self-shifters.

The rear anti-roll bar has been stiffened by 19 percent on turbo variants, and 22 percent on the hybrids, to reduce body roll and improve turn-in, while the adaptive suspension on the F Sport has been updated to include a Custom mode that lets you personalise powertrain, steering, suspension and air conditioning settings.

Classier cabin

The flight deck has been updated with a 26cm centre screen (up from 18cm) on EX and F Sport models fitted with satellite navigation, and revised switchgear layout with metal trim on the switches. The analogue clock gets a new, more legible face and, on models with GPS, now automatically adjusts itself when crossing time zones.

Entry-level E models have been upgraded with the addition of rain-sensing wipers, self-levelling halogen headlights with LED daytime running lights) and a reversing camera.

Mid-grade EX variants now come with roof rails whilst the range-topping F Sport gets LED headlights with dynamic levelling, a panoramic view monitor, aluminium instrument cluster detailing and chrome trim on the steering-wheel controls.

The upgraded NX300 range will be on Lexus showroom floors from January 2018.

PRICES

Lexus NX300h 2018 review

Should I buy one?

It depends on your priorities. The hybrid powertrain is going to feel recalcitrant to keen drivers familiar with a traditional setup and, despite its accuracy, the artificial feel through the steering won’t be welcomed either. An Alfa Romeo Stelvio is in another universe in terms of involvement.

Not that such things will necessarily bother those of more steady-state driving habits, be it motorway cruising or a congested commute. In either scenario the electric share of its powertrain means the NX300h is quiet and refined, even if the low-speed ride does sometimes fire shockwaves into the cabin.

And that’s the big compromise, because it means the NX300h has a very narrow operational bandwidth – smooth roads at a cruise, basically – where it really impresses. As such it’s difficult to recommend the Lexus against the butter-smooth Audi Q5 or the more dynamically appealing BMW X3, charismatic as the Japanese SUV is.

The NX300h’s trump card is its efficiency. Carbon dioxide emissions are rated at just 121g/km, which betters even similarly powerful diesel rivals and means benefit-in-kind rates are low. For many, that, the indulgence of the interior and the unusual design will be enough.
