The MG ZS EV has gained a new Standard Range variant with a claimed combined range of 198 miles as the new entry point to the line-up.

The new ZS EV Standard Range improves on the 163-mile range offered by the old ZS EV by 35 miles, thanks in part to a 6.6kWh-larger battery, at 51.1kWh.

Prices start from £27,495 after the UK government’s £1500 Plug-in Car Grant has been applied, meaning the ZS EV is one of the cheapest electric SUVs on sale.

It’s beaten by only the Mazda CX-30, which offers 124 miles of range from a diminutive 35.5kWh battery.

The ZS EV Long Range, meanwhile, offers 273 miles of range from a 73kWh battery and is priced from £29,495.

“MG is already the go-to choice for customers looking to buy a great quality, well-equipped and terrific-value electric car, but the new Standard Range ZS EV takes that offering to new levels,” said MG commercial director Guy Pigounakis.

“The Plug-in Car Grant may have been reduced, but MGs commitment to delivering great-value, world-class EVs certainly hasn’t. The ZS EV offers unrivalled specification, range and performance for the money."

MG ZS EV facelift launched (in India) at Rs. 21.99 lakh - Team-BHP​

The MG ZS EV competes with the Hyundai Kona Electric in the Indian electric SUV space.

MG Motor India has launched the updated ZS EV facelift. The electric SUV is available in two variants: Excite and Exclusive, at a price tag of Rs. 21.99 lakh and Rs. 25.99 lakh (ex-showroom), respectively.

The new ZS EV is based on the MG Astor. The styling is similar to the petrol-powered version except for a few details. The EV gets a blanked-off grille which is flanked by reprofiled headlamps. The rear features redesigned LED taillights and the car rides on 17-inch alloy wheels.

Inside, the ZS EV facelift comes equipped with a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a 7-inch digital instrument cluster. The outgoing car had an 8-inch head unit and analogue dials.

Other features offered on the ZS EV facelift include a panoramic sunroof, wireless charging, 6-airbags, 360-degree camera, blind-spot detection, lane change assist, rear cross-traffic alert, hill descent control, ESC and TPMS.

Powering the 2022 ZS EV is a 50.3 kWh battery and an electric motor with an output of 174 BHP and 353 Nm. The battery is said to offer a maximum range of 461 km on a single charge. MG claims a 0-100 km/h time of 8.5 seconds.

MG has launched the ZS EV facelift at Rs. 22.00 lakh for the Excite variant (which will be available from July 2022) and Rs. 25.88 lakh for the Exclusive variant.

Important to note that the MG Astor - which can be seen as the petrol variant of the ZS EV - is priced from Rs. 9.98 lakh to Rs. 17.73 lakh.

Essentially, with the ZS EV, you are paying the premium for electric technology and being an early adopter of the same.

MG ZS EV Cons​

• Expensive! Even after subsidies, EVs carry a huge price premium over ICE cars. You're paying for the tech & being an early adopter
• The very similar & arguably more practical MG Astor is 8 - 12 lakhs cheaper
• Needs a charging point installed at your home parking. This is not doable for many people
• Lack of charging infrastructure & ~350 km range limits long-distance / highway usability
• Firm ride quality means you always feel the road, especially with the recommended 41 PSI tyre pressure
• Long “full tank” charging times in comparison with an ICE car. Overnight charging is best
• Missing features such as ventilated seats, auto-dimming IRVM, steering reach adjustment, ADAS tech (which Astor gets), wireless Android Auto / CarPlay…
• Size & interior quality are more comparable to a Creta than other 28-30 lakh rupee cars
• The rear seat is better suited to 2 adults & a kid, not 3 adults
• 6-speaker sound system is ordinary for the price. Subwoofer conspicuous by its absence
• Lower Excite variant is currently unavailable. It is cheaper by ~4-lakh rupees

MG Astor gets new EX variants with fewer safety features - Team-BHP​

MG Motor India has launched four new EX variants based on existing trims. The new variants get fewer safety features and are priced below the regular variants.

The Astor EX variants miss out on features like ESC, traction control, hill hold control and hill descent control.

The Sharp EX trim does not get Blind Spot Detection, Lane Change Assist and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert features.

The MG Astor EX trims are only available with the 1.5-litre petrol engine paired with a 6-speed manual transmission. This engine makes 108 BHP and 144 Nm.

The regular variants of the SUV are also available with a 1.5-litre petrol engine paired with an 8-speed CVT and a 1.3-litre turbo-petrol mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission.

What’s the best electric vehicle for cheap range?

Want to go as far as you can for the smallest RRP? Then the glamorous MG ZS EV is just for you

We love a good sports car at Top Gear, of course we do, but even we sometimes have to admit the allure of a good basic car that does the job well. Similarly with electric cars, you can get ones that are fancy and fast, but they’ll cost you to get them on your drive. What if you just wanted a decent family electric SUV that will do a load of miles without costing too much?

Realistically – and slightly horrifyingly for a car journalist to consider – that’s about as much thought as many buyers will put into their new car. As if to prove the notion, the most recent new car sales figures from UK industry body the SMMT showed that MG has outsold some auspicious brands in the year to August – Renault, Skoda, Seat, Honda, Fiat, Dacia and Citroen. Not altogether, obviously. Things aren’t that bad.

And so the MG ZS SUV makes a case for itself as a vaguely decent electric car for a vaguely decent price. No sniggering at the back there. You can connect your phone and there’s a steering wheel, what more could you want from a car? It’ll seat five people inside, though it might not do wonders for their self-esteem.
