The world of good value crossovers goes electric. Who's leading the charge?
Remember that while an EV costs more to buy, most of the charging is done at home so it’s much cheaper to run, as well as cleaner. Objectively speaking, the Peugeot is an easy winner. It’s highly imaginative in design and the best to drive. But it’s also the most expensive, although there are deals to be done. The Kia is an engaging alternative, similarly priced and armed with a bigger battery, though it has less on-road finesse. The MG’s big play is its value for money, which automatically admits a whole new audience into the world of electric mobility. For this we salute it, but we’d recommend spending a bit more if you can for a more polished end product. We’d go Peugeot.

MG Motor has pulled the wraps off the New MG ZS EV, which arrives in the brand's UK dealerships in November 2021.
The renewed model builds on the success of the existing ZS EV, which is the brand's best-selling pure electric model and a consistent fixture among the UK's top 10 best-selling EVs. The revised model makes the MG ZS EV even better and is characterised by a modernised design, improved performance, a significantly longer range, and even more technology.
It introduces a fresh 72kWh battery pack delivering a substantial range increase, as well as a new iSMART connectivity system, which brings state-of-the-art infotainment to the latest model.
In styling terms, the New MG ZS EV gets a new electric-only front end, with a stamped-effect grille to improve aerodynamics and a new side-opening charging port. The bold new face is set off by LED headlights and distinctive daytime running lights. It also gets a redesigned rear bumper and new wheels.

Alongside the debut of its new Marvel-R flagship, MG has revealed the updated versions of its ZS EV and 5 SW EV.
Headed for UK dealerships in November, the lightly restyled and upgraded duo have received a series of tweaks to their powertrains and interiors with a view to strengthening the Chinese brand's position in Europe, where it's established in 15 markets and is ramping up its presence in three more.
Each car has been subject to a light visual refresh that removes their front grilles to more obviously mark them out as electric – but it's the ZS EV that receives the most extensive technical changes.
The crossover is now available with a 72kWh Long Range battery that offers a range of 273 miles per charge, compared with the 163 miles offered by the current car's 44.5kWh pack.
That range brings the ZS EV more into line with its closest rivals, the Kia e-Niro and Nissan Leaf, but a starting price of just €34,990 (£29,770) means it maintains its status as one of the cheapest electric SUVs on sale.
An even cheaper version, equipped with a 51kWh battery for a range of 199 miles, will arrive shortly, priced from €30,990 (£26,370). Precise UK prices will be confirmed closer to its market launch.
Along with the improved range, the ZS EV now comes with MG's latest iSmart infotainment system (as seen in the Marvel-R), which brings a raft of new features.
The 5's revisions are more subtle, given that the estate only recently received the option of a larger battery, but a restyled front end and the addition of the iSmart system marks it out from the current car. It continues to offer 61kWh and 51kWh battery packs, yielding ranges of 295 and 199 miles respectively.

It’ll arrive in UK dealerships next month, and there’s a smaller 51kWh alternative coming next year too: that’ll return a very respectable 198 miles on paper, no doubt offering a cut-price route into a car that’s already cheaper than chips.
The design of the ZS EV has also been overhauled, with the most noticeable change being the real grille swapped out for a fake, stamped-effect one. Better for aero, apparently, and it houses a new charging port which itself contains a four-stage lighting system so you can check charging progress at a glance.
LED headlights, daytime running lights, a new rear bumper and fresh wheels are the other headline alterations.
Both Type 2 and CCS charging are supported. Plug in at home and you’ll max out at 7kW, delivering a full charge in ten-and-a-half hours. Find a service station with a rapid, DC supply and you’ll be capped at 76kW, enough to get you on your way again in 42 minutes.

MG has revealed prices and specification details for the refreshed, electric ZS EV as the model goes on sale this month with extended range and subtle design tweaks.
Three specification levels will be available, with prices for the entry-level SE Long Range model starting from £30,995, or £28,495 with the government's £2500 plug-in car grant (PiCG) applied.
The Kia e-Niro rival will gain a long-range 72kWh battery with a range of up to 273 miles, a big improvement over 163 miles on offer from the out-going model.
Entry-level SE models are equipped with a 10.1-inch touchscreen, sat nav and USB charging ports, along with automatic air conditioning, LED headlights, keyless entry and adaptive cruise control. All models receive assist systems including active emergency braking, lane assist, and pedestrian and cyclist detection.
The next level Trophy specification level starts from £30,995 after the PiCG and adds a panoramic roof and roof rails, heated, electric leather seats, automatic wipers and wireless phone charging.

The new ZS battery is 68.3kWh net. An even cheaper 49kWh option comes next year, btw. Round figures, my test mileage was 50-30-10 motorway-rural-city. The range worked out at 230 miles, which is the same as I'd have got on this sort of chilly day from the Kia Soul we had as a long-term-test car. The Soul, and similarly endowed e-Niro and Hyundai Kona, have a smaller battery but go just as far because they're more efficient.
