Be still thine beating hearts: the new MG ZS Hybrid+ is here and it's available in two trim levels! The MG ZS SUV ‘SE’ starts from £21,995, with the ‘Trophy’ kicking off from £24,495. Both get a 193bhp output courtesy of a 1.5-litre petrol engine and electric motor duo.
It means 62mph is achieved in around 8.7s, which isn't keen, though keen mpg enthusiasts will of course be drawn to the MG's tiny 1.83kW battery and corresponding 45kW generator, which helps it achieve a claimed 55.4mpg on the WLTP cycle. Frugal.
Moving inside, the facelift gets a 12.3in infotainment and 7in virtual driver display pairing, while the safety suite comprises technologies like active emergency braking, rear cross-traffic alert and blind spot detection. There’s even something called ‘traffic jam assist’ - likely a useful asset for Londoners.
If you opt for the extra £2.5k Trophy car, the cabin gets tinted rear windows and leather upholstery atop the heated, lumbar-supported seats. You’ll also get a slightly funkier steering wheel, 18in ‘Sabre’ alloys outside and… that’s about it. Hope you weren’t expecting an Alcantara-coated fridge

The MG ZS arrives in South Africa as the freshly relaunched brand’s most affordable crossover, kicking off at under R300k. Is this MG’s answer to the Chery Tiggo 4 Pro?
MG has officially returned to South Africa and its volume driver is expected to be this: the MG ZS. So, how much does this compact crossover cost in Mzansi?
Well, before we take a look at local pricing, it’s worth pointing out the ZS available at launch in South Africa is the 1st-generation model, which has been in production since 2017. The 2nd-gen version, however, is tipped to arrive in the opening half of 2025, likely wearing the “ZS Pro” badge and positioned above the older model (which we expect to soldier on as the “ZS Core”).
With that out of the way, back to the topic at hand. In South Africa, the original ZS launches in 2 flavours: the MG ZS 1.5 Comfort 4AT for R289 900 and the MG ZS 1.5 Luxury 4AT for R309 900. That sees this model debut with a foot in the highly competitive sub-R300k segment and the other just outside it.
So, where does this model fit into Mzansi’s broader crossover market? Well, measuring 4 314 mm from snout to rump, it’s very similar in length to the popular Chery Tiggo 4 Pro(which currently runs from R269 900 to R415 900). Though it interestingly undercuts the slightly larger Haval Jolion (currently priced from R345 950), it also finds itself competing with a throng of smaller Indian-built crossovers, based on price alone.

Summary
There is a lot to like about the MG ZS Pro. Like its siblings, it will come with a competitive warranty (5 years/200 000 km vehicle & 7 years/unlimited km on the engine), plus a 5-year/60 000 km service plan. Pricing will be revealed shortly before launch (to reiterate, at some point before the middle of 2025), but MG Motor SA knows the ZS Pro will need to be keenly priced to be competitive in this cutthroat segment.
The compact family car/small crossover market is massive – and bristles with talent. MG enters the local market when Western brands are struggling to do business, and new models from China and India have proliferated. I can’t pretend to imagine how different our roads will look in 2 years purely in terms of what cars will survive, but it wouldn’t surprise me if the MG ZS (Core and especially, -Pro) thrives.

Locally, the MG ZS Pro will be available in two trim lines: Comfort and Luxury – the former and latter priced from R397 600 and R431 500, respectively.

This model’s turbocharged petrol unit produces 125 kW and 275 N.m of torque. (As a reminder, the naturally aspirated 1.5-litre employed by the non-Pro ZS, which we’ve evaluated for a road test in April 2025, churns out 81 kW and 150 N.m.) Exclusively equipped with a CVT (compared to the ZS’s five-speed manual and four-speed automatic), the newcomer has a claimed average fuel consumption of 6.9 L/100 km.

In terms of positioning, the ZS Pro slots above the standard, 1st-generation ZS – which seemingly soldiers on locally as something of a prolonged-lifecycle model – but below the larger HS.
In Mzansi, the ZS Pro line-up comprises 2 derivatives at launch, each powered by the automaker’s turbocharged 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine. In this application, the 4-pot delivers 125 kW and 275 Nm to the front wheels via a continuously variable transmission (CVT).
So, what does the newcomer – which was revealed approximately a year ago and is sold as the 2nd-generation ZS in many markets – cost? Well, the 1.5T Comfort CVT is priced at R397 600, while the 1.5T Luxury CVT costs R431 500. For context, the 2 derivatives in standard ZS range (each featuring a naturally aspirated engine) cost R289 900 and R309 900.

MG now covers a much wider spectrum of the South African market, following the recent introduction of the MG3 hatchback and the announcement this week of the new MG ZS Pro compact SUV.
The MG ZS Pro doesn’t replace the current ZS model, which soldiers on as a value leader with its starting price of R289,900. Instead it slots between the older model and the more premium HS SUV, which starts at R499,900.
So how much for the new model? MG Motor announced at the Festival of Motoring on Thursday that the ZS Pro will be available in two variants, with the 1.5T Comfort retailing at R397,600 and the 1.5T Luxury coming in at R431,500.
The ZS Pro is significantly larger than the ZS, with overall length having grown from 4,314mm to 4,430mm, making it larger than the Chery Tiggo Cross but marginally smaller than the Toyota Corolla Cross and Haval Jolion. MG claims a boot volume of 443 litres.
Both ZS Pro models are powered by a 1.5-litre turbopetrol engine that produces 125kW and 275Nm, with power going to the front wheels through a CVT gearbox with ‘stepped’ gear change simulations. A hybrid version is available in overseas markets, but that has not been confirmed for South Africa.
The Comfort base version ships with 17-inch alloy wheels, a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with reverse camera, a 7.0-inch partially digital instrument cluster, cruise control, single-zone climate control, and push-button start. Key safety features include front and side airbags, ESP stability control, and traction control.
