It's official: Nissan has made a Nismo-fettled Leaf...

The new Nissan Leaf, revealed just under a month ago, is the second-generation version of the Japanese manufacturer’s electric hatchback. If it isn’t quite visually edgy enough for your tastes, you’re in luck…

Why? Well, Nismo, Nissan’s in-house performance division, has just revealed its take on the new electric vehicle, and it’s called the Nissan Leaf Nismo Concept.

Naturally, the styling is a lot more aggressive thanks to a redesigned front bumper with LED foglamps, chunky side skirts and a revised rear bumper, complete with a diffuser. In addition, the concept features a set of Nismo-branded wheels and an in-your-face red, black and white colour scheme.

Changes made to the interior, meanwhile, are far less extreme; all you get here is red accenting on the air vents, start button, seats and steering wheel.

Nismo has also revealed that this special Leaf gains a revised suspension setup, Continental ContiSportContact tyres and a “custom-tuned computer that delivers instant acceleration”. No word yet on performance figures.

Of course, at this stage, the Leaf Nismo is merely a concept (and one that will be on display at the Tokyo Motor Show later this month), but there’s always a chance that it will go into production as Nissan seeks to both expand its Nismo range and broaden the appeal of the Leaf.

This mildly tweaked second-generation Leaf concept is important because it’s Nissan performance arm Nismo’s first attempt at a hot (well, warm, anyway) version of an electric car.

The Leaf Nismo concept will premiere at the Tokyo motor show on 25 October; it has the same front-mounted 110kW/320Nm electric motor and 40kWh battery as the standard Leaf 2.0, revealed at the Frankfurt motor show in September - but with its computer software reconfigured to deliver instant acceleration at all speeds.

Which is likely to reduce its range significantly if used over-enthusiastically but will certainly up the Fun Factor…

The concept also features sports-tuned suspension and high-performance tyres to make the added zip more usable, and an aero kit which, according to Nismo, reduces lift without adversely affecting the Leaf’s drag coefficient.

The sporty all-black interior trim features Nismo’s signature red accents, while the electronics suite has all the new Leaf’s hi-tech ProPilot features, including lane-keeping assist, fully automated parking and the rather oddball e-Pedal, which uses a single rocking pedal to start, accelerate, decelerate, stop and hold the car.

OK, there’s a real brake pedal as well, for use in what Nissan politely calls “aggressive braking situations”, but the idea is, as far as possible to conserve energy whenever possible by using it to charge the battery, rather than wasting it as heat in conventional braking.

Nissan has promised that there will be a production version of the Leaf Nismo 'eventually', but there's no word as to when.

Nissan Leaf Nismo Concept

Launched in September 2017, the new Nissan LEAF comes with the latest iteration of Nissan's ProPILOT single-lane autonomous driving technology. 5 Reasons Why New Nissan Leaf is Important

1. There is considerable demand for a pioneering product

We recently attended the global reveal of the new, 2nd-generation Nissan Leaf plug-in electric vehicle (EV), which will be sold in over 60 markets worldwide (including South Africa). Even though the Leaf hasn't sold in huge numbers in Mzansi, we believe the next-generation hatchback is of particular significance – here's why...

The very fact that Nissan has developed and released the 2nd-generation of the all-electric Leaf is, in itself, an important development. Large car manufacturers are extremely careful with how and where they spend their vast R&D budgets, and the Leaf must have justified itself as a viable product worthy of Nissan’s time and finances.

Quite simply, this means there’s demand out there. Nissan will initially sell the second generation Leaf in 49 markets across the globe, adding more, such as South Africa, in due course. Nissan sold just under 300 000 units of the first generation Leaf globally; which is an admirable number given that when it went on sale in 2010, it was the first mass-produced electric vehicle in any market. Essentially, the Leaf had to carve out a niche for itself. In an ultra-competitive motoring landscape, with more choice for the buyer than ever before, this was no mean feat.

The practically packaged, user-friendly Leaf has done for EVs what the Toyota Prius has done for petrol-electric hybrid vehicles.

2. It should cost as much to buy as its predecessor

An essential factor in the wider adoption and success of all-electric vehicles will be the price point at which they enter the marketplace. Most buyers, who even at the best of times remain sceptical of trading in their petrol-burners for what is essentially a smartphone with wheels, will be making a very simple calculation: is the price of an EV comparable to a traditional internal-combustion vehicle?

Nissan has a very positive reply to that answer: in Japan at least, the new Leaf will go on sale for roughly the same price as the model it replaces. This is a huge achievement, given the massive advancement in terms of range and features over the outgoing model.

The first generation Leaf was on sale in South Africa for a list price of R500 000. Currently, there is no confirmation from Nissan South Africa of the Leaf’s introduction to the local market, but they are seriously considering it, and one can only hope that the pricing remains similar.

However, there is still some way to go here. The new Leaf is about the size of a current generation Volkswagen Golf and with prices for that vehicle starting at under R300 000, it remains a tall order asking the average car buyer, the majority of which are already stretching their budgets, to opt for a more expensive electric vehicle.

3. A feat of manufacturing

The Leaf is a triumph of modern-day manufacturing, most importantly because it is built on exactly the same production line as four other Nissan vehicles. The factory, outside Tokyo in Japan, required minimal re-tooling and can produce upwards of 140 Leafs every single day.

This development was critical to lowering the manufacture costs and therefore market price of the Leaf. Additionally, the process can easily be replicated in other countries where Nissan factories are based, which means that, potentially, the Leaf can be manufactured in various locations around the world, which will help with shipping costs and would create favourable tax incentives from local governments with protectionist import policies, such as South Africa.

4. Improved operating range

Besides the purchase price, range anxiety is most likely the greatest hurdle to the wider adoption of electric vehicles. Motorists have been spoilt by the convenience of pulling into a fuel station and filling up in minutes.

However, the new Nissan Leaf claims double the range of the outgoing model, at 400 km (according to the official Japanese testing process). Small improvements have been made to ensure the Leaf travels further than ever on a single charge. For instance, the air-conditioner and heater had to be completely redeveloped as this seemingly trivial but important feature, which we use everyday, places a fair amount of strain on the battery.

Even if the claimed amount is out by 25%, that’s still a usable range of 300 km. If the average motorist lives 20km from his or her place of work, that equates to just over 7 round trips, which means that the owner would likely have to charge their vehicle once a week.

The Leaf’s only competition in South Africa, the BMW i3, will travel a claimed 315 km on a full charge. The Leaf’s range compares favourably to the brand new Tesla Model 3, for which Tesla claims a range of 350 km, although it is important to bear in mind that the Japanese testing cycle and US testing cycle are different and potentially produce incomparable results.

Additionally, the Leaf can charge to 80% capacity in 40 minutes using a supercharger. In Japan, there are over 7000 charging points. In cities like Yokohama, it is now mandatory for new commercial developments to feature a minimum number of charging points, ensuring an ever-growing network of convenient charging points. Of course, South Africa has just a fraction of that number, but that is changing.

5. The Nissan-BMW alliance

Locally, Nissan and BMW are the only two manufacturers selling fully electric vehicles in South Africa. However, the rivals have joined forces with the Growthpoint group of property developers to roll out charging infrastructure across South Africa. This is a win-win for everyone; the faster the rollout, the faster the adoption of electric motoring, the more EV’s both companies are likely to sell.

Between BMW and Nissan, the manufacturers offer 68 fast-charging locations across South Africa.

Charging points are available at selected Nissan and BMW dealers. BMW currently has 54 charging points while Nissan has 14. In a further bid to help foster the market, all charging points offer connections for all types of electric vehicles; a Leaf owner can happily charge at a BMW dealership and vice versa.

But, more importantly, they have started popping up at shopping malls and other public spaces, notably the V&A Waterfront and Constantia village shopping centres... This represents incredible convenience to the electric-vehicle motorist. Plug in your vehicle, grab your groceries and return to an 80% battery charge in 40 minutes. This is utterly essential to fostering the fledgling EV market and we hope to see more and more charging points put in place across the country.

Summary

At Cars.co.za we are encouraged by the developments in this corner of the motoring industry. Electric motoring is a burgeoning segment and it is positive to see brands working together to speed up wider adoption of electric vehicles.

One of the biggest hurdles to making the asking price of the Leaf competitive is to lower the manufacturing cost of a low-volume model.

When taking into account the established economic trends of new technology, in which wider adoption, improved manufacturing techniques and large-scale manufacturing all tend to drive prices down for the end-consumer, one has to assume that the prices of EVs will follow the same trajectory, making these vehicles more and more appealing to the average motorist.

Electric motoring ultimately represents a cleaner, cheaper way of commuting, and is likely to be an important part of any future transport infrastructure of modern cities. The Nissan Leaf is expected to arrive in South Africa later in 2018. We will keep you updated as soon as local specification and pricing details are revealed.

What I'm not seeing is a definite commitment from Nissan SA that they will be bringing Leaf 2 to this country. Right now BMW seems much more committed to supplying electric cars to South Africa. There are NO unsold Leaf 1 models left in the country (believe me, I checked), so how much can it hurt for them to say, "Yes. we remain committed".

But what this doesn't mention is that they use different connectors. A BMW cannot connect to ChaDeMO, and a Nissan can't charge from a CCS/SA socket. Yes, there are dongles, if you don't mind importing them from the UK or USA. BY the way, only some high-end places have both connectors ATM - see plugshare.com if you don't believe me. And "fast-charging" is a relative concept. Faster than charging from your 3-pin socket at home is about it. Only very few have DC-powered 30-minute top-ups. Most are the Level 2 AC four-hour variety. The good news is that most South Africans in a position to buy an electric car will have a garage or carport of sorts with power points. We generally don't park on the street overnight like much of Europe. So charging overnight at home will be the way most people will cope for the foreseeable future.

I am ready to go electric. Right now it looks like there is a BMW i3 in my future. If Nissan SA wants to change my mind, they'd better be quick about it.

Should I buy one?

The price structure for the Leaf range will remain similar to the current car; £26,000 for the first UK cars in a special Launch Edition specification.

Currently, the Leaf is getting long in the tooth, and lags behind some rivals. The new model, which is deliberately more subtly styled, addresses these points comprehensively.

It's driving attributes will also be comprehensively addressed if Nissan carries out all of the changes as promised to the cars heading for the UK. So this is a relatively subdued verdict, pending Nissan’s pledged tweaks. If they’re implemented, the new Leaf will be not just a formidable electric vehicle, but an incredibly decent car full stop.

Chances are that the Leading Electric Affordable Family car will continue to be just that. The competition’s ramping up though, so the Leaf might not be alone at the top of the class for long.

New Nissan Leaf priced from £21,990 in UK

Revamped version of world's best-selling electric car comes with 80-mile range boost from new 40kWh battery

The second-generation Nissan Leaf electric car can now be ordered in Britain, with prices starting from £21,990 for the entry Visia model.

That price includes the UK Government's £4500 grant for zero emission vehicles, as does the £24,290 for a the Acenta and £25,990 for the higher specced N-Connecta model. Top of the range is Tekna, which starts from £27,490 once the grant is applied.

Also available with the new Leaf is a limited-run Zero model, which is priced from £26,490 (including the government grant) and is only available in 1500 units.

UK reservations opened on 1 January soon after the order total in Europe surpassed more than 10,000 cars. First UK deliveries are due in February.

The Leaf is already the world’s best-selling all-electric car, with the previous model having been produced in more than 283,000 units. But Nissan has heavily reworked its new model to take on increasing competition in the fast-growing EV sector. It is powered by a 147bhp motor – 40bhp more than the outgoing car – that produces 199lb ft. It can achieve 0-62mph in around eight seconds, just over three seconds faster than the current car.

The new Leaf is fitted with a floor-mounted 40kWh lithium-ion battery, compared with a choice of 24kWh and 30kWh in the old car, and Nissan says it has a New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) range of 235 miles on a single charge. That’s 80 miles more than the outgoing range-topping 30kWh battery and 111 miles more than the entry-level Leaf.

Due to feedback that the old Leaf’s distinctive style wasn’t popular with some buyers, Nissan has given the latest model a substantial makeover that echoes the new Micra. The exterior design has been refined in a wind tunnel to reduce wind resistance and increase efficiency.

Should I buy one?

If you think you’re ready for an EV, few would make a better route in. Those who decide to will continue to do so for rational reasons: because the Leaf’s better-priced than its opponents, better-supported by relevant public fast-charging infrastructure, more practical – and because it now has the battery range to be more usable than it ever used to be.

At an ‘NEDC’-certified 235 miles, the new Leaf’s cruising range beats that of every rival save the priciest Renault Zoe (250 miles) and the Opel Ampera-e (323 miles, though it’s still denied to UK buyers). Our test drive suggested you should expect more like 160- to 170 miles from this car between charges, in mixed real-world use. Relative to the claim, that may sound like a con - but it’s actually quite impressive for what remains one of the juvenile EV class’ value champions.

Should I buy one?

Perhaps the most ground-breaking thing about the new Nissan Leaf is, conversely, it it isn’t all that ground-breaking. At a time when many car firms are aiming to push the electric car market into the future with giant leaps, Nissan has made a car for the present, taking small but significant strides. It takes everything that’s good about the previous Leaf, and improves on it in every area that matters. It’s not hard to imagine that a lot of early buyers will be existing Leaf owners seeking an upgrade.

Notably, the areas of improvement include price. This is a car that has more battery range, motor power, torque and space than its predecessor and yet, depending on trim level, is up to £1500 cheaper.

It’s also here – and right now. The many bold, potentially game-changing models being developed by other car firms aren’t - and many are still years away. And, when they do arrive, they're likely to be expensive. For those whose lifestyle fits a small electric hatchback, few machines on the market at the moment offer as compelling an argument in terms of price, available charging infrastructure and practicality.
