Mostly agree.

On the whole it's very competent but locally it's failing a bit.

There are 2 things Toyota SA needs to to stir up some sales:

- R15k price drop across the board.
- At least another engine option with ideally another spec option.
 
Toyota Corolla GR to use Yaris GR Motor

Toyota has filed a GR patent for its Corolla, fuelling rumours that the high-performance hatchback will be put into production.

The patent was filed in Australia as GR Corolla and it's likely that the rival for the Volkswagen Golf GTI, Hyundai i30N and Renault Megane RS280 will be produced. Many online pundits say it's some way away from the light of day, with an estimated reveal and launch in 2023.

The big question which everyone is asking, is what engine will it have? Given Toyota's efficiency and thriftiness, we're expecting to see a shared engine. Toyota's new TNGA platform is already shared by many products like the Corolla, RAV4 and Yaris, and we've praised it for its refinement and handling characteristics. Even in base-spec, the manual gearbox and 1.2-litre turbo Corolla hatch is generally good to pilot, so there's certainly potential.

Auto Express is reporting the engine earmarked for the hot GR Corolla is none other than the turbocharged 1.6-litre 3-cylinder petrol engine found in the GR Yaris. It packs 200 kW and 370 Nm, with power going to all 4 wheels via a 6-speed manual gearbox. Whether the GR Corolla adopts the same all-wheel-drive strategy or switch to a front-wheel-drive strategy is yet to be seen, but it's going to take some cleverness to channel all that shove through the front wheels. Torque steer, anyone?

New Toyota GR Corolla: social media post seemingly confirms hot hatch

While it wasn’t a particularly well-kept secret, Toyota has now seemingly confirmed it will indeed build a GR Corolla hot hatch.

On both Twitter and its website, the Japanese firm’s North American division said “while GR Yaris isn't coming to the US, perhaps it's time the US got a Toyota hot hatch to call its own”.

Sure, Toyota didn’t explicitly name the GR Corolla as that hot hatch but considering the only other hatchback besides the Yaris the company offers in North America wears the Corolla badge, it’s almost certainly talking about the long-rumoured VW Golf GTI rival.

Of course, rumours of a GR Corolla hot hatch have been circulating for some time. In March 2020, Toyota filed an application to trademark the “GR Corolla” badge in Australia.

Toyota South Africa Motors has announced a handful of specification upgrades for its Corolla Hatch “in line with market requests”.

So, what’s new for the hatchback? Well, the flagship Xr trim level upsizes to fresh 18-inch alloy wheels wrapped in 225/40/R18 tyres, along with a space-saver spare wheel. Xs derivatives, meanwhile, retain the 16-inch alloy wheels (with 205/55/R16 rubber) and a full-size spare.

Both trim levels, however, gain the Japanese firm’s “new-generation” infotainment system, which incorporates Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. While the Xr range-topper gained the “Toyota Safety Sense” pack back in March, the system has now been expanded with the addition of rear cross traffic alert.

Toyota has also made some changes to the colour palette, adding “Graphite Grey” and “Caribbean Blue” to the mix and replacing “Scarlet Metallic” with “Fierce Red”. As before, a black roof is offered in conjunction with “Satin Silver” and “Caribbean Blue” as well as “Fierce Red” and the newly added “Platinum White Pearl”.

This car has so much potential, why Toyota is busy with Yaris performance that no one would buy they should be doing something with this instead.

A digital artist over at Auto Bild created the render you see above, handing the imagined hot hatch suitably more aggressive styling cues than those displayed by the standard model.

While the rear end gains a cheeky spoiler, it’s up from the digital artist made the most drastic changes, lending the GR-branded Corolla hatch a squared-off grille and side air-inlets clearly inspired by those of the smaller, SA-bound GR Yaris.

Of course, the long-rumoured GR Corolla is expected to employ the same G16E-GTS turbocharged 1,6-litre, three-cylinder petrol mill as the aforementioned GR Yaris, likely with slightly higher peak outputs (for the record, the JDM-spec GR Yaris makes 200 kW and 370 N.m). All-wheel drive seems likely as well, as does a six-speed manual gearbox. Whether Toyota will offer a self-shifting option remains to be seen.

New Toyota GR Corolla to be offered in wagon form, too – report

While rumours of a Toyota GR Corolla hot hatch have been circulating for some time, a fresh report now claims the Japanese firm will offer a performance wagon version, too.

According to Japanese publication BestCarWeb, the long-awaited GR Corolla hot hatch will debut as early as September 2021 (perhaps as part of a facelifted range), although a GR Corolla Touring is now also reportedly on the cards.

A long-bodied Corolla wearing the "Touring Sports" badge is already available in some markets in standard form (as well as a crossover-inspired Trek variant) and in GR Sport guise with model-specific styling (but no powertrain upgrades).

The report claims the performance versions of both body styles will employ the same turbocharged 1,6-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine as the SA-bound GR Yaris, which boasts 200 kW and 370 N.m in JDM-spec guise. The all-wheel-drive system and six-speed manual gearbox will seemingly carry over as well.

200kW is already pushing the 1. 6l, 3cyl to the max, I don't know where more power is going to come from, the awd will surely add some weight, in short there is a good they will need to dig deep to challenge the GTI.

A fresh report out of Japan claims the long-rumoured GR Corolla hot hatch will be more road-biased than the rally-bred GR Yaris.

According to BestCarWeb, the new GR Corolla will be available in both five-door hatchback and wagon form, offering more practicality than the smaller, three-door GR Yaris.

The Japanese publication claims the GR Corolla will thus offer improved “rear-seat comfort” and a “large” luggage compartment.

The biggest departure from the GR Yaris formula, however, is expected to come in the form of chassis tuning. BestCarWeb says the hot Corolla will be positioned as a “more casual” hatchback than the GR Yaris, with an emphasis on “on-road” (rather than rally-like) performance.

Still, the GR Corolla looks likely to inherit the turbocharged 1,6-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine from the GR Yaris, which boasts 200 kW and 370 N.m in JDM-spec guise. The all-wheel-drive system and six-speed manual gearbox will seemingly carry over as well.

New information surrounding the Toyota GR Corolla has surfaced regarding its powertrain and performance numbers. The hot hatch will be the performance arm’s fourth product that uses the GR badge but it seems as if it’ll be the first with a hybrid powertrain.

Based on information sourced by Car Sensor, due to the GR Yaris’s impressive output of 200 kW, Toyota GR has set the bar for its upcoming Corolla in the 220 kW region using a naturally aspirated 2,0-litre four-cylinder petrol hybrid-electric system connected to a six-speed manual transmission with automated rev-matching. It’ll also use an upgraded version of the GR Yaris’s all-wheel drive system that switches the front-rear torque distribution on demand.

Despite the power output being higher than the GR Yaris, the Toyota GR Corolla looks to be inferior in terms of numbers based on in-house tests that the Japanese publication has sourced. In fact, it’s suggested that the GR Corolla could even be priced lower than its smaller sibling.

Like many others, I was so taken with the Corolla Hatch when it launched because, let’s be honest, Corolla/Auris models of the not-so-distant past were synonymous with reliability, sure, but dullness. Another example of the world’s largest carmaker playing to type, opting for sensible over sexy. Now the updated hatch is so much more than just a prudent purchase. It looks sharp – particularly in top-spec XR guise with 18-inch wheels – and possesses a sweet chassis that’s every bit on par with the C-segmenters out there. It boasts a great amount of standard equipment, impressive levels of refinement and sufficient performance to keep owners entertained. In one fell swoop, the Toyota has dispatched decades of tedium synonymous with the Corolla moniker.

Toyota GR Corolla for 2022?​

Following a previous GR patent filing for its Corolla, the most recent rumours suggest that Toyota will unleash a GR Corolla hatchback in 2022. ​

The latest rumour regarding the forthcoming GR Corolla suggests that we could see the potent hot hatch come to market toward the end of 2022. The Forbes report also makes mention that Toyota plans to introduce a hydrogen-powered Corolla and Prius in 2023.

Previously, Best Car Web Japan reported that the all-new Toyota Corolla GRMN will be featuring the 1.6-litre turbocharged 3-cylinder motor as well as the all-wheel drivetrain. The source notes it will be revealed in September 2021 along with a Corolla GRMN Touring version.*
