The Swedish carmaker has confirmed a more affordable electric version of its XC40 will be coming to SA soon. Here are some early details.

Volvo SA is expanding on its electrified vehicle portfolio. The product line-up will now included the Volvo XC40 P6 recharge, which is positioned under the P8 Recharge.

The difference is the P8 offers a twin-electric motor setup, with one on each axle, whereas the Volvo XC40 P6 features just the single electric motor driving the front wheels. The P6 has power outputs of 170 kW and 330 Nm, giving it a claimed sprint of 7.4 seconds. The bigger Volvo XC40 P8 Recharge starts from R1 200 000, so we’re expecting this single-motor model to be cheaper.

Of more importance is the battery capacity and range, and Volvo says its 69 kWh lithium-ion battery gives the P6 Recharge a range of 423 km on a single charge. An 11 kW onboard charger ensures the vehicle recharges quickly, and customers can choose from either charging at home or at the ever-increasing number of public chargers.

“Just like the twin-motor version, the Volvo XC40 P6 Recharge serves up tremendous on-road refinement, yet still boasts more than enough power to be exceedingly fun to drive. In addition, its high level of energy efficiency results in a usable range in excess of 400 km, all with the benefits of zero tailpipe emissions,” said Greg Maruszewski, Managing Director at Volvo Car South Africa.

Following hot on the heels of the all-electric Volvo XC40 P8 Recharge that went on sale at the beginning of 2022, the Swedish carmaker is getting ready to unleash the more attainable P6 version.

Just how much less expensive it will be, remains to be seen as Volvo has not released official pricing as yet. However, it will no doubt offer a substantial saving over the P8, which currently retails at R1.2-million.

So what makes it different?

Whereas the XC40 P8 Recharge has two electric motors, one on each axle to offer all-wheel drive capability and 300kW, the P6 Recharge has a single motor that powers the front wheels only.

With one less motor it is of course going to be less powerful, but the T6 still packs an impressive 170kW and 330Nm, allowing for a claimed 0-100km/h sprint time of just 7.4 seconds.

However there are no downgrades or sacrifices when it comes to battery size and driving range.

The P6 is fed by a 69kWh lithium-ion battery that allows the vehicle to cover up to 423km between charges, according to WLTP-based factory claims. Keep in mind that real-world mileage could be lower.

Volvo Car South Africa has confirmed that the pure electric XC40 P6 Recharge will join the brand’s range of electric vehicles in South Africa.

Earlier in 2022, the XC40 P8 Recharge AWD was introduced locally in South Africa earlier in 2022 featuring twin electric motors, one for each axle. The P6, however, features a single, permanently sealed and maintenance free unit with outputs of 170 kW and 330 N.m. The front-wheel drive variant will offer brisk performance and a 0-100 km/h time of 7,4 seconds.

With a range of up to 423 km (WLTP) the XC40 P6 Recharge is fitted with a powerful 11 kW onboard charger as standard, allowing the vehicle to provide competitive and practical charging capabilities whether at home or public charging points. Using a shift-by-wire, single-speed transmission featuring a short gear ratio, the XC40 P6 Recharge features lively off-the-line acceleration, improved hill-climbing ability, and an impressive towing capacity of 1 500 kg braked.

While we were out and about assessing the recently refreshed Volvo Cars line-up of hybridsand the new all-electric XC40 P8 Recharge, we also snuck a test drive in the new XC40 P6 Recharge.

The XC40 P6 Recharge will be Volvo's second all-electric variant for South Africa, ahead of the launch of the C40 Recharge later this year. The P6 model is front-wheel-drive and comes with a single electric motor compared to the P8 Recharge, which is all-wheel-drive and powered by two electric motors (one per axle).

Electric vehicle segment disruptor?

While nothing's official, the P6 Recharge will be priced competitively in the EV segment. The P8 sells for around R1.2 million, and while Volvo Cars South Africa won't admit it, it aims to bring the P6 in for approximately R1 million. That's not cheap, don't get us wrong, but it is an exciting proposition in the premium SUV segment where entry-level diesel SUVs already cost more than a million bucks.

If they nail the pricing and bring it in for a bar, it will undoubtedly accelerate interest in all-electric mobility among the wealthy. After all, it's still an XC40, and it's perfectly capable of working as a respectably sized family car, and the P6 Recharge offers a decent driving range.

VERDICT

The Volvo XC40 P8 Recharge is not flashy in any way and it could easily pass for a regular model, and we like that about it. You’d never say it was a true performance SUV, but it really is. Added to that is a decent range, by electric car standards, and enough practicality to serve as a family car if need be.

If you have R1.26m to spend on an electric car, you’ll find that this vehicle will tick a lot of boxes. Just make sure you have a decent solar set-up at home because there’s no point to a coal-powered car.

Let's face it, electric vehicles are not a priority in South Africa, especially with our dire electricity situation, thanks to Eskom. Besides charging fears, affordability is the next most significant factor. Most South Africans are not in the means to even think of making a mobility switch, even if they wanted to. But, the Swedish automaker is on the right track trying to keep pricing as "low" as possible to try and get more customers to transition into an EV.

Volvo Car South Africa has just announced pricing for its highly-anticipated XC40 P6 Recharge. They've billed their new single-motor model as the local market's most affordable all-electric luxury vehicle. Mini's electric Cooper SE is SA's most affordable electric vehicle with a price tag from R694 600. The realistic range of this EV is also only about 150km - 170km on a fully charged battery; however, this car is not considered a luxury vehicle despite its high price.

Volvo can claim the most affordable luxury title because when comparing its starting price of R1 075 000 to other EVs available in South Africa, these vehicles are all over R1.2million rand and more, including their own XC60 Recharge, which is priced from R1 278 900.

BMW now has a vast electric vehicle line-up, too, with the recent introduction of its iX range with the iX3 starting from R1 290 000. Audi's e-tron model line-up starts from R1.9million; the e-tron Sportback starts from R2.1m, and prices only climb for the rest of the exciting models. The same applies to Porsche's Taycan models - starting prices are more than R2m while the Jaguar i-Pace retails from R2 028 900.

Volvo says order books will officially open on Tuesday, 26 July at 08:00 with the XC40 P6 Recharge available exclusively online through the My Volvo website from a starting price of R1 075 000.

The new XC40 P6 Recharge is Volvo’s latest entrant in our local market and will be open to order from the 26th of July 2022 at 08h00. The single-motor model has been dubbed by Volvo Car South Africa as the most affordable all-electric luxury vehicle on the local market.

So what does the starting price of R1 075 000 get buyers?

Comparatively, a premium SUV powered by a conventional ICE may come in a little bit cheaper but Greg Maruszewski, Managing Director at Volvo Car South Africa, says it was important for the Swedish firm to provide local consumers looking to make the switch away from combustion engines with a viable alternative to the local market’s assortment of far higher-priced electric vehicles. That is where the XC40 P6 Recharge comes in since it is the same level of plush motoring, packaged into a familiar looking model that is driven silently by an electric motor.

Maruszewski further added: “The appetite for electric cars in South Africa is steadily growing, as proven by the popularity of our first battery-powered offering, the twin-motor XC40 P8 Recharge AWD. As with that model, we worked hard to bring in this P6 variant at an attractive price point.”

As far as standard spec goes, the only options are 20-inch alloy wheels, panoramic sunroof and heated seats / steering wheel. Everything else is standard, and you get goodies like wireless smartphone charging, front/rear parking sensors, reverse camera and the new Google Android-based operating system that features Google Maps and other services.

How much does the XC40 P6 Recharge cost in South Africa?

The price includes a five-year maintenance plan and warranty, three years of comprehensive insurance, use of a petrol car for two weeks per year for three years, a public charge cable and a wallbox home charger.

Prices for the Volvo XC40 P6 Recharge will start at R1 075 000, and a limited number of cars will be available to customers later in the year. If you’re keen you’ll have to order yours online through the My Volvo portal, with the order books opening next week Tuesday, 26 July at 8am sharp.

The P6 is almost R200 000 cheaper than the P8, but you don’t lose out on range as the new model’s 69 kWh lithium-ion battery pack still offers a claimed range of up to 423km between charges on the WLTP cycle.

The difference between this and the P8 come in when we talk power and traction. In contrast to the latter’s 300kW twin-motor, all-wheel drive set-up, the P6 has a single electric motor that powers the front wheel only. It’s no slouch, however, with outputs of 170kW and 330Nm enabling a claimed 0-100km/h sprint time of 7.4 seconds.

Standard features include 19-inch alloy wheels, an Android-powered infotainment system, wireless charging and parking sensors front and rear. The only options, according to Volvo, are 20” alloys, panoramic sunroof as well as heated seats and steering wheel.

What all this means is that Volvo doesn’t yet have a game-changing EV on its books. Maybe that will come with the XC90’s replacement. Until then, people will have to buy the XC40 Recharge based on its looks, rather than on any special efficiency or driving dynamics.
