The technology present in most premium models these days is something to behold. You get songs that can be changed with a full hand motion, while others have innovative self-drive software.

A world full of options

As a refresher, the XC40 T4 in mid-specced Inscription trim before any options are added warrants a price tag of R715 800. Power comes from a turbocharged 2.0-litre engine that generates 140kW and 300Nm with power sent to the front wheels and onto the tarmac via an eight-speed automatic transmission.

While the SUV is already a gem in Inscription specification, the range of optional extras fitted to it adds that extra bit of exclusivity in all the right places.

As much as 10% of each sole is made from a recycled car tyre; seven recycled plastic bottles are used to make the yarn for the knit upper, while other bits like the Swedish flag on one shoe tag and yellow Casca name honours the partnership between the brands.

Swedish automaker Volvo has been 'driving the charge to mobility' in as many aspects as possible. They're also probably one of the most ambitious brands to become a circular economy with their climate plan.

The automaker aims to be completely green by 2040. Wheels24 reported earlier in April that Volvo Cars wants every part of its vehicles to be designed, developed, and manufactured to be used and reused, either by the company or its suppliers. Additionally, emission-heavy materials such as steel and aluminium will also be re-manufactured, repaired, reused and refurbished.

They've even teamed up with Casca to create a sustainable shoe.

Volvo launches EV Range Assistant with over-the-air update

New app offers extra features said to improve the range of the firm's electric models

A new app will allow Volvo XC40 Recharge drivers to optimise their electric vehicle's range more easily following an over-the-air update.

The firm is introducing a Range Assistant app that will improve smart battery management and regeneration performance, which, it says, will lead to increased range.

The assistant has been described as being “especially helpful on longer trips because it reduces the need for charging stops”.

Other new features include safety system improvements, the addition of new information about how a cold climate impacts battery range, a real-time energy consumption display and and the ability to automatically adjust the climate system, which is said to extend the car's range.

“Through in-house development of software and over-the-air updates, we can constantly improve our cars,” said Sanela Ibrovic, Volvo’s head of connected experience. The Range Assistant app is a great example of how quick development and deployment of new features can improve the Volvo customer experience every day.”

Volvo says the app will be rolled out immediately for XC40 Recharge drivers and the C40 Recharge will receive the update from the start of production. All models will gain the update by the end of October this year.

Volvo is trialling a beta version of its new Range Assistant app, designed to help drivers of its XC40 Recharge and forthcoming C40 Recharge squeeze out as many miles from a charge as possible.

The app is coming to the electric SUV by way of an over-the-air update before the end of October, while its crossover sibling will have it pre-installed when production officially gets underway.

The Range Assistant promises drivers ‘a clear and accurate’ range estimate based on real-time energy consumption, automatically adjusting the climate control to conserve juice when it’s needed most.

It also provides a breakdown on how energy is being used inside the car, and suggests ways drivers can adapt their driving style to be as efficient as possible. A bit like the Microsoft paperclip, but for throttle and braking instead of letter writing.

It's a proven fact over time that most humans develop an attachment to certain things - whether it be another person, pet, or even an inanimate objects.

That statement rings true with our Wheels24's test mule - the Volvo XC40 T4. Coated in the Onyx Black metallic paint and fitted with a host of optional aesthetic extras like a panoramic sunroof and 19-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, the SUV is a stunner with an imposing bold stance.

Coming back to the human attraction: I've been behind the wheel of this XC40 for the better part of the last couple of months, and, naturally, it feels as though it's my own - getting used to the multitude of convenience, driver, and safety features available.

Volvo adds front-driven XC40 EV as dual-motor car sells out

New entry-level EV is added while Polestar Engineered models and various diesels are discontinued

Volvo has shuffled its line-up in the UK, ushering in a new XC40 EV variant and discontinuing several variants of other models.

The new XC40 Recharge Plus and XC40 Recharge Pro are single-motor, front-wheel-drive versions of the electric SUV launched earlier this year. They're currently the only variants on sale, as the 402bhp four-wheel-drive model is currently sold out, although it's expected to be back on the price list for 2022.

The new electric XC40s use a powertrain familiar from the entry-level version of the Polestar 2, with a 228bhp motor on the front axle, which is good for a 0-62mph time of 7.4sec and a top speed of 99mph. Available exclusively with a 69kWh battery, they offer between 257 and 262 miles of range, depending on specification.

Prices start from £48,300 for the Plus – around £5000 less than for the AWD variant – and rise to £53,050 for the highly specified Pro. First customer deliveries are expected in the early part of 2022.

Long-term update: Volvo XC40 is more practical than it looks

It does fall a bit behind on ergonomics though, with the central touchscreen’s features being spread out over three pages. You do become accustomed to it, but it’s not as user friendly as most modern touchscreen set-ups where there’s a central menu. Hopefully Volvo’s upcoming Android infotainment systems will be more user friendly than this.

Volvo to introduce smaller SUVs to improve competitiveness?

It looks like both Volvo and Polestar may be expanding their compact crossover segment to be a bit more competitive in the global market. Based on recent rumours, it also looks like the Swedish company will make use of electrification, as per the brand’s current strategy.

According to information sourced from Autocar, Volvo is looking to create a product that will tackle the Mercedes-Benz EQA and will play a key role in the brand’s goal to achieve a 50 per cent EV global sales by 2025.

It’s understood that this new model will be dubbed the XC20 and make use of Geely’s open-source SEA platform. Deadline features of the SEA architecture include its automatically lowering suspension, facial recognition functionality and ‘full-life’ over-the-air update compatibility.

Long-term wrap: Volvo XC40 T4 does more than just tick boxes

VERDICT

As a modern premium SUV, the Volvo XC40 ticks almost all of the boxes, from comfort and refinement to road holding and performance. It’s also comfortably sized and we doubt many prospective buyers will find it too big or too small.

But its strengths go beyond just rational box ticking – the XC40 is a stylish product inside and out, and it has a premium feel to it. Although, with a starting price of R728 300 for the T4 Inscription (base T3s start at R635 500), we’d expect nothing less.

SA’s latest electric car is here: Volvo XC40 P8 Recharge hits the streets

Although the South African electric car market remains in its infancy, 2022 is shaping up to be a big year for local fans of battery powered cars, with Audi, BMW and Mercedes all planning to unleash multiple EV options.

However, Volvo has gotten the jump on them all with the arrival of the first XC40 T8 Recharge units in early January. Priced at R1.2-million, it might not be the electric car for masses that everyone’s praying for, but it still ranks among the less expensive EVs in South Africa.

The Volvo XC40 P8 Recharge also has some serious performance on offer. With outputs of 304kW and 660Nm directed to all four wheels through two electric motors, the compact SUV is said to be capable of sprinting from 0-100km/h in a mere 4.9 seconds.

Thanks to its 78 kWh battery pack, the P8 Recharge is capable of a range of 418km between charges, according to Volvo. When hooked up to a fast charger, owners can achieve an 80% charge in just 40 minutes.

There are many other perks to owning this vehicle, as Volvo Cars South Africa MD Greg Maruszewski points out.

After much anticipation and excitement, the first example has arrived in South Africa and has already been delivered to its new owner at Tom Campher Volvo Cars, Johannesburg.

As a result of growing local demand, Volvo Car South Africa has secured an additional allocation of units for the local market with orderbooks now open and deliveries earmarked for June 2022. Sold exclusively online via the automaker’s innovative My Volvo website, the XC40 P8 Recharge represents the flagship of the XC40 range and is priced at R1,2-million.
