The Volvo XC40 has been seeing reasonable success in South Africa since it was launched here in 2018. While initially available in T5 and D4 guise, the range was later revised with the entry-level T3 trim. After its latest price update, Volvo has now added a new mid-range trim which bears the T4 moniker.

The Volvo XC40 T4 utilises the same turbocharged 2,0-litre four-cylinder engine but with a 140 kW and 300 N.m of torque state-of-tune. This is delivered to the fronts via the eight-speed automatic transmission which gives it a 0-100 km/h time of 8,4 seconds. An all-wheel drive option for this engine is available in international markets but it looks like this has not made it to our local shores.

The Volvo XC40 range in South Africa has been expanded to include a new T4 derivative. Here are the specifications and pricing for the new model.

The stylish Volvo XC40 is the Swedish brand's most successful premium SUV as well as being the brand's best-seller internationally. With a choice of petrol, diesel, hybrid or pure electric, there really is an XC40 to suit all needs and tastes.

Now for 2021, Volvo South Africa has introduced the T4 badge, which bridges the gap between the T3 and T5 . According to Greg Maruszewski, Managing Director at Volvo Car South Africa, the arrival of the Volvo XC40 T4 is set to further cement the success of the range in this country. “The XC40 had a good 2020; it had an 8.40% share of its segment in 2019; that grew to 14.70% last year. In 2021, the XC40 nameplate performance is continuing to grow its sales locally,” he reveals.

The Volvo XC40 T4 engine is a 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with 140 kW and 300 Nm, and the vehicle comes with an 8-speed automatic gearbox. In terms of performance, Volvo claims the XC40 T4 is good for a 8.4 second run to 100 kph. In comparison, the T3 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol 3-cylinder motor musters 110 kW and 265 Nm, and the T5's 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol 4-cylinder engine packs 185 kW and 350 Nm.

VOLVO Cars South Africa managing director Greg Maruszewski says that he’s energised and ready to take on the challenge of going all electric. It’s no secret that Volvo Cars is going electric and that by 2030 its entire line-up of vehicles will be either all-electric or hybrid.

“We see hybrids taking over in the early stages of this transition to electrified mobility, but eventually we believe that battery technology will improve so much in the next 10 years that consumers will want an electric car as their only car.

“Driving an electric car is a genuinely fantastic experience and we’re looking forward to putting as many electric cars on the road in South Africa as possible,” Maruszewski said.

XC40 leading the charge

The Volvo XC40 P8 Recharge will be the first all-electric Volvo sold in South Africa and it goes on sale next month. “As we announced previously, our electric cars will be sold online only, but customers can go into a dealership for a full walk-through of the vehicle and to seek any assistance they may need with making the transaction. We understand that this is a new process in South Africa and that it will have some challenges but we are confident the dealer network is ready to take on these developments,” Maruszewski said.

Volvo XC40 P8 Recharge goes on sale in South Africa (and you can only buy it online)

Volvo Car South Africa has announced the pricing for one of the most eagerly awaited cars to be launched in South Africa this year, namely the XC40 P8 Recharge all-electric. Volvo XC40 P8 Recharge orders are officially being taken from this month (10 May 2021), however the vehicle popped up online in the OEM’s online store “for sale” last night.

Deliveries will commence in August/September this year and pricing for the car will start at R1,2 million (including VAT). According to Greg Maruszewski, managing director at Volvo Car South Africa, the company has worked hard to offer this luxury all-electric vehicle at a competitive price.

“All-electric vehicles sold in South Africa have traditionally come with hefty price tags – and this has undoubtedly been a deterrent. We know that there is an appetite in South Africa for electric cars and we were determined to give customers an attractive price,” he says.

In addition to the announcement of the relatively competitive price tag, the company also announced that the car will be sold exclusively online via the company’s new website, My Volvo. This unique online store enables South Africans to purchase or rent a new car in as little as 20 minutes – and without leaving their home. Customers only need to follow five steps to select the car and arrange both finance and delivery (or collection).

Volvo’s first all-electric vehicle, the XC40 P8 Recharge is capable of travelling up to 418 km on a single charge. It should deliver brisk performance, with its twin electric motors producing 304kW of power and 660Nm of torque to deliver a 0-100 km/h time of just 4.9 seconds.

Care package comes standard

Included in the pricing of the Volvo XC40 P8 Recharge is the Volvo CARE package. This includes:

- A five-year maintenance plan and warranty (eight-year/160 000km warranty on the battery pack)

- Three years of comprehensive insurance

- Use of a petrol car for two weeks per year for three years (if you want to take extended journeys)

- And a home charger station that includes charge cables.

Volvo Car South Africa has put a price tag on its upcoming XC40 Recharge electric SUV ahead of the order books officially opening on Monday, May 10.

Priced from R1.2 million, the XC40 P8 Recharge is not the cheapest battery car in South Africa but it’s also far from being the most expensive. For the record, the much smaller Mini Cooper SE starts at R686 400, while the larger Jaguar I-Pace is yours for a hefty R1 942 600.

Customer deliveries of the XC40 Recharge are set to commence in August, but there’s no use visiting a dealer at any point because the car will be sold exclusively online through the company’s My Car website. Volvo claims that this ‘online store’ will allow people to buy or rent a car in as little as 20 minutes.

The XC40 Recharge is an impressive performer too. Its twin electric motors produce combined outputs of 304 kW and 660 N.m and they also enable all-wheel drive capability. According to Volvo, the EV will sprint from 0-100 km/h in 4.9 seconds.

But how far can the XC40 Recharge travel between charges? Volvo SA claims a range of up to 418km on a single charge and buyers can expect to wait just 40 minutes for an 80 percent charge if the vehicle is plugged in to a 150kW DC fast charging station. A full charge, when connected to an 11kW AC fast charger will take between eight and 10 hours, Volvo says.

The battery comes with an eight-year or 160 000 km warranty, providing that it and the car has been maintained in accordance with the company’s recommendations.

The free use of a petrol-engined car is an offer that is unique to Volvo Car South Africa. It is part of a Volvo CARE package that is provided to every Volvo XC40 P8 Recharge purchaser. Other elements of this package include a five-year maintenance plan and warranty (of which the battery is covered for 8 years or 160 000km, whichever occurs first), three years of full comprehensive insurance and a home charger that includes charge cables.

The two-week loan is ideal for an EV driver wishing to go on holiday. The reality is that a long-distance trip in any EV means stopping to recharge from time to time. South Africa has an outstanding network of charging stations, meaning that this is relatively effortless. Wow a 3 pot on this - seems a bit out of place, I guess that why they claiming a 8.0L per 100KM so real world it should be around 9.6 to 10L per 100KMs

I guess the 2.0 makes more sense and more fuel efficient as well
