The same car is R846 000 in the US even with our bad exchange rate.

I just bought a Volvo end of last year, but I still would like an electric car next but the market really needs to be fixed in this country.

Deduct 42% in taxes from R1,2m then your amount is about right.

The highly anticipated Volvo XC40 P8 Recharge has been spotted on South African roads, marking the local arrival of the Swedish firm's first all-electric vehicle (EV).

A mere four days after Volvo opened the order books for the battery-powered XC40 in May 2021, all initial slots were sold out. Now the first example has made local landfall, being handed over to its excited new owner at the Tom Campher Volvo Cars dealership in Johannesburg.

To meet growing local demand, Volvo Car South Africa has secured an additional allocation of units, with orders now being taken and deliveries expected in June 2022. The XC40 P8 Recharge, which sits at the summit of the popular XC40 range and is priced at R1.2 million, is sold exclusively online via the automaker's innovative My Volvo website.

Volvo is testing a new system for recharging electric cars wirelessly to assess the technology's viability for future models.

Tests will involve a fleet of Volvo XC40 Recharge cars with wireless charging capability, which will be used as taxis in Gothenburg, Sweden.

To charge wirelessly, compatible cars park over a charging pad that has been embedded into the road surface. Charging starts automatically, so drivers don’t need to leave the car.

Volvo claims the charging speed is more than 40kW, which is almost as fast as a wired 50kW fast charger and four times faster than a wired 11kW AC charger. Volvo also expects the XC40s to travel 100,000km (62,137 miles) a year and be used for over 12 hours a day.

Three-year test in Sweden will use XC40s and charging pads embedded into the street

Volvo is testing a new wireless charging technology it hopes to bring to its future range of electric cars.
A fleet of electric XC40s will take part in the three-year test in Sweden, run as taxis and charged using stations developed by a company called Momentum Dynamics.

The stations send energy through charging pads embedded into the street, which is then picked up by a receiver unit inside each XC40. To better align with each pad, the XC40s will be equipped with 360-degree cameras, and we’re told the pads can charge at more than 40kW.

Each XC40 is to be used for more than 12 hours a day during the test, and Volvo wants to rack up 100,000km per year; a side test of the durability of EVs in commercial use.

“Gothenburg Green City Zone lets us try exciting new technologies in a real environment and evaluate them over time for a potential future broader introduction,” explains Volvo’s R&D boss Mats Moberg.

Very interesting, and will make life so much easier than plugging in - or forgetting to do so.

Now if Volvo would just drop that absolutely stupid idea of building Google OS and features into their infotainment and onboard computer everything would be perfect.

Volvo today announced it's starting a real-world test of wireless charging for electric vehicles. This will take place in Gothenburg, Sweden, over a three-year period. During this time, a small fleet of fully electric Volvo XC40 Recharge EVs will be used as taxis by Cabonline, the largest taxi operator in the Nordic region, and charged wirelessly at special stations erected specifically for this purpose throughout the city.

The wireless charging test is enabled by Gothenburg's Green City Zone strategic initiative, under which designated areas within the city are used as live test beds for the development of new sustainable technologies. "Testing new charging technologies together with selected partners is a good way to evaluate alternative charging options for our future cars", Volvo's Head of R&D Mats Moberg said.

Volvo updates XC40 Recharge design, adds single-motor C40

Single-motor C40 is new entry point and starts from £44,800, while XC40 Recharge gains subtle facelift

Volvo has introduced several updates to its all-electric, mid-sized SUV models, including the addition of a new single-motor variant and exterior design changes.

The Volvo C40 Recharge coupé-SUV can now be specified with a single motor, in addition to the twin-motor variant currently on sale. Power is sent to the front wheels.

The single-motor C40 Recharge is powered by a 69kWh battery, which can be charged from 10% to 80% in around 32 minutes and offers a claimed range of 269 miles.

Prices for the 227bhp single-motor C40 Recharge start from £44,800 and the waiting list currently stands at six to seven months.

Meanwhile, the Volvo XC40 Recharge has gained a subtle design refresh for the first time since its launch in 2017.

The all-electric version of the XC40 SUV has been given a new bumper and a frameless grille plate to match the C40.

Volvo Cars has introduced a range of updates to its entire car line-up, the most prominent of which is an exterior refresh of its fully electric Volvo XC40 Recharge. The company also unveils a single-electric-motor variant of the pure electric C40 Recharge.

The new C40 and XC40 variants, along with all other new Volvo Cars' models, will be available through an updated offer concept, designed to make the online ordering process of Volvo cars easier and more convenient. Volvo customers will now be able to choose between different equipment levels and select the options that best suit their personal needs. The new offer structure reflects Volvo Cars' ambitions to increase price transparency, as well as reduce complexity in its model offering by focusing on attractive pre-selected variants.

When Volvo Cars first presented the XC40 in 2017, it was a fresh, creative and distinctive addition to the Volvo line-up. Five years later, it is an award-winning staple in the company's portfolio and one of the car maker's constant top sellers.

To reinforce its cutting-edge design and modern statement, Volvo Cars' designers have now given the entire XC40 line-up a refresh. A new front bumper and a frameless grille plate keep the all-electric Volvo XC40 Recharge visually in sync with the C40 Recharge, aligning the two cars that symbolise Volvo Cars' electrification journey.

How will wireless charging technology for electric vehicles work?

According to Momentum Dynamics spokespeople, the charging station sends energy through a charging pad, which is picked up by a receiver unit in the car.

To easily align the car with the charging pad, Volvo Cars will use its 360-degree camera system. For the fully electric XC40 Recharge cars, the wireless charging power will be more than 40kW, making the charging speeds around four times faster than a wired 11kW AC charger and almost as fast as a wired 50kW DC fast charger. Consider this: if you use MagSafe to recharge your Apple iPhone 13, that wireless charger sends around 15W to your phone.

Is it a worthwhile alternative to petrol and diesel?

Coming in at R1.2 million and only available to purchase via the My Volvo website, it's a fantastic alternative energy vehicle to consider if you can afford something at this price point. It's particularly apt for the times, too, as fuel prices rise. Unfortunately, stock challenges continue to affect this model. Still, Volvo Cars SA has promised us that it's getting more vehicles around the middle of the year to satisfy growing customer demand. You can charge its battery overnight at home, thanks to a wall box charger that will be fitted in your garage as part of the vehicle's purchase price.

Load shedding might concern you, but rest assured, if you are using this car in the city and you keep it topped up around 80%, you'll be able to easily cover a few days of travel before having to charge it fully.

When you buy one of these cars, Volvo will also give you access to a petrol-powered XC40 if you plan to drive cross-country and don't want to take a chance on electric power only just yet. You also get comprehensive insurance for the vehicle for three years included in the purchase price. The car comes with a five-year or 100 000km mechanical warranty, and the lithium-ion battery pack comes with an eight-year or 160 000km warranty.

If we had the bucks, we'd buy one of these in a heartbeat, as it has the space, pace, and grace to work as a family car or as a refreshing alternative to a performance vehicle.
