2018 Volvo XC40

Test drove a T5 momentum yesterday. Thoroughly-impressive car. I've never been a SUV fan at all, but this definitely has me sold. Looks really good in red as well.

I'm interested to see what the Volvo Care package will be like in SA. According to their website, it's going to be launching soon. I think it will definitely attract some people who wouldn't think twice about a Volvo if they price it properly.

Saw the first one today in the metal and oh my word what a stunning car. Granted it was the R-Design spec but yah it definitely beats the X2 and Q2 hands down (looks-wise)

Don't forget the Jaaaaaaggggg...The E-Pace is a direct rival to the XC40 & it is a looker but the baby Volvo appears to a winner overall.

I thought the E-Pace was in the same class as the X3 and Q3 owning to its size.

Think we have to get out the measurement charts but I was under the impression the E-Pace & the XC40 are direct rivals. Size-wise.

Yes the Jaaag gets crazy expensive higher up in the range but it's engine options & power is more substantial vs the Volvo.

I was also under the impression until the guys at Ignition GT mentioned the Q3 as a rival to the E-Pace.

Ya, looks they didn't know what they were talking about, just looked at some figures and the XC40 is slightly longer (in length and wheelbase) than the E-Pace
 
XC40 crosses two continents trying to beat the boats

Three Brazilian journalists have just completed a Trans-America drive that could have come straight out of an episode of the reality TV show The Amazing Race, crossing 14 countries in 20 days.

And why they did it was even more amazing - they were racing against a whole fleet of some of the world’s fastest sailboats.

The intrepid petrolheads - led by former rally driver Cacá Clauset - left Itajai on the coast of Brazil at the same time as the seven 20-metre Ocean 65 yachts set off on the 5700 nautical mile (10 400 kilometre) Leg 8 of the 2017/2018 Volvo Ocean Race, with the aim of getting to the finish in Newport before the boats.

That meant driving 17 600km over a mix of freeways, back roads and gravel from the Atlantic to the Pacific and back again, from sea level to 5500 metres, across Brazil, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, Mexico and the United States, as quickly as possible.

And what high-performance racing vehicle did they choose for this epic road trip? A bog-standard Volvo XC40 SUV, chosen at random off a showroom floor.

The trip took them 20 days; incredibly, the worst mechanical problem they suffered during the expedition was a flat tyre. Clauset said a far bigger challenge was the bureaucracy, passport detainments and even police surveillance they had to deal with along the way.

And did they beat the boats? Well, no, actually. The entire fleet of seven identical boats arrived in Newport within three and a quarter hours of each other, less than 16 days after leaving Itajai - but to judge by the video below, the road trip must have been a lot more comfortable.

Volvo Car SA has already sold its initial XC40 allocation…

Volvo Car South Africa says that it has already sold its initial allocation of XC40 units for 2018 and now plans to bring in even more examples of its baby crossover before the year is out.

“Our initial allocation of 350 vehicles sold out before many even arrived in the country, so we have increased our XC40 volume to 700 units for the year. The XC40 is making a big impact in the local SUV segment,” said Greg Maruszewski, managing director of Volvo Car SA.

According to Naamsa, Volvo Car SA registered exactly 100 units of the XC40 in April, making it the Swedish brand’s most popular product … and seeing it outsell rivals such as the Jaguar E-Pace, BMW X2 and Audi Q2.

The news comes after Volvo announced that it would expand production of the XC40 in both Europe and China after having received “almost 80 000 orders” from around the world. Production would be increased at its Ghent manufacturing plant in Belgium (which supplies South Africa) and its Luqiao factory in China in the first half of 2019.

The automaker furthermore revealed that it plans to “capitalise on the popularity of its new smaller models” with the introduction of fresh vehicles based on its Compact Modular Architecture (CMA). In a statement, the Swedish brand said the new models would be “replacing the current V40”.

This is impressive, brand definitely on the up! I DO wonder if they will bring the V60 - its done reasonably well in its old guise - and i still hope to convince the madam (though she said she'd leave me)
 
Volvo XC40 T5 AWD R-Design (2018) Review

Verdict

Volvo is struggling to make enough XC40s to satisfy demand; even South Africa’s initial allotment of cars is running out. It proves Volvo is definitely on the right track: The XC40 doesn't lean too far towards the sporty-SUV side (so as not to deter practically-minded buyers) and stands out enough as a premium, well-thought-out choice.

It offers thoughtful practicality features in a cabin that’s comfortable, ergonomically sound and well-styled. A few basic shortcut buttons for climate control would be nice additions, but overall, the infotainment system is easy to figure out for anyone au fait with a modern smartphone.

The new platform delivers a ride quility that’s complementary to its SUV stature. It’s comfortable on road and agile enough when in a hurry. The high-powered turbopetrol engine delivers plenty of grunt, but suffers a little more in terms of consumption than we expected. The 'diesel is always a good choice if you want to save in the long run.

Overall, the XC40 delivers a package that’s hard to beat in this segment. It meets and exceeds expectations in every department. It feels like a high-end, premium packaged product that competes with Jaguar, Audi, and BMW, but dwarfs them on price. This looks like it could be the model that puts Volvo firmly back into play in SA.
