Watch Volvo XC40, new Ford Focus undergo Euro NCAP tests

Euro NCAP has released its latest batch of crash-test results, providing safety ratings for the Volvo XC40 and the new Ford Focus.

Both vehicles achieved a maximum five-star rating. The XC40 was particularly impressive, scoring 97 percent for adult occupant protection to put it amongst the top five cars for this area tested by Euro NCAP in the past three years.

The small Swedish crossover (a D4 AWD Momentum derivative was evaluated) scored 87% for child occupant safety, 71% for vulnerable road user (previously pedestrian, but now including cyclists) protection and 76% for its safety assistance technology.

The Focus (a 1,0 Trend hatchback underwent the test), meanwhile, managed 85% for adult occupant protection, 87% for child occupant protection, 72% for vulnerable road user protection and 75% for its safety assistance tech.

“It’s good to see that manufacturers, both in the premium sector and the volume market, are responding to our tough new requirements introduced in 2018 by fitting technologies that will save lives,” said Michiel van Ratingen, secretary general of Euro NCAP.

“Technologies like AEB [autonomous emergency braking] and ELK [emergency lane keeping] deliver immediate safety benefits, but they are also enabling technologies for the autonomous vehicles of the future.

“Euro NCAP’s roadmap sets a series of demanding tests for each of these ‘milestone’ technologies seeking to ensure that their performance saves lives today as well as tomorrow,” he added.

Interestingly, Euro NCAP has introduced “offset” collisions (in addition to the existing “full overlap” impact scenarios) into its AEB regime for 2018, broadening the scope of testing to encompass more real-world crash situations.

“Full overlap” refers to all of the front of a car impacting with all of the rear-end of another, while offset scenarios test AEB performance where only a portion of a car’s rear-end becomes a collision threat.

Based on the Euro NCAP video, Volvo shouldn't deny that their Lane Keep Assist needs significant refinement.

I suppose you're right. In the three elements of the NCAP tests for Lane Support the XC40 scored as follows:
Emergency Lane Keeping MARGINAL
Lane Keep Assist GOOD
Lane Departure Warning ADEQUATE

Therefore room for improvement?

From the Volvo specification info on Lane Keeping Aid:
"Lane Keeping Aid adds convenience and safety to motorway driving. If you're about to cross a lane marking without using the indicator, it will gently steer your car back into the lane. If the steering intervention is not enough or you keep steering across the lane markings, you'll be alerted with vibrations in the steering wheel. Constantly monitoring your position on the road, Lane Keeping Aid provides smooth support at speeds between 65 km/h and 200 km/h. Please note: The driver is always responsible for how the car is controlled, this is only a supportive function."

In some of the car reviews there were comments and footage about the XC40 keeping too far left in the lane, I'm thinking this might be related, or is the lower rating because Lane Keeping Aid only works from 65 km/h?
 
The man who designed the Volvo XC40 heads to … Tesla?

A fresh report out of the United Kingdom suggests that the young man who designed the exterior of the Volvo XC40 has left the Swedish automaker, reportedly taking up a position with Tesla.

According to Auto Express (and confirmed by his LinkedIn profile), British designer Ian Kettle quietly left Volvo back in February 2018.

The publication added that “a few weeks ago” Kettle had moved into a senior design role at electric automaker Tesla, reporting to design director, Franz von Holzhausen.

However, the US brand opted not to confirm the appointment to Auto Express, even though Kettle’s online biography listed his latest location as the “greater Los Angeles area”.

The XC40, which was named the European Car of the Year for 2018 in March, has proven more popular than even the resurgent Gothenburg-based had expected, prompting plans to expand production early in 2019.
