Ford previews new Focus ahead of next week's reveal

Ford has released a teaser video of its all-new Focus a week ahead of its official unveiling, which is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, April 10.

The short black and white film doesn’t give too much away, but we do get to see the striking new headlights with a Volvo-like garnish (think of Thor’s hammer missing a corner) and a section of the sloping tailgate with ‘Focus’ block lettering.

However, the new C-segment contenter has been spotted out on the roads with minimal disguise...

And with no camo at all (apparently for an ad shoot) as we see below.

Not much is known about the new Focus at this stage, but various reports indicate that it will be slightly larger than the current model, while shedding around 50kg. Interior spy shots indicate that there will be a large multimedia screen towering above the dashboard, as with the latest Fiesta, and material quality also appears to have improved somewhat.

Ford is likely to add some variations of the Fiesta ST’s new 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbopetrol to the engine mix, along with existing 1-litre units and an electric version, given that Ford recently doubled amount its investment in forthcoming battery-powered vehicles.

New Ford Focus confirmed for 10 April reveal

The Blue Oval is aiming high with the fourth-generation Focus, which is due to be revealed next week

The new Ford Focus has been developed using the know-how gained over the 20 years creating and working on the previous three generations of the car, according to vice president of product development in Europe, Joe Bakaj.

As part of Ford’s global development strategy, the new Focus Mk4 - which has been confirmed for reveal on the 10 April - has been developed by the firm’s European-based engineering teams, headed by Bakaj. The project leader has been Ford’s small-car guru, Darren Palmer, whose team engineered recent launches including the new Fiesta, Ka+ and Ecosport.

“Back in 1999, we had the brief to redefine the segment and the new Focus will take every lesson we have learned into one package,” said Bakaj. “The goal is to set the benchmarks in the class for design, packaging, dynamics, efficiency and technology, and I really do believe that is what we’re on course to deliver.”

The Focus, a rival to the Vauxhall Astra, will be built on Ford's global C-class platform, which is also shared with the Fiesta. It will be a five-door hatch only; in lieu of a three-door body, Ford is allocating a greater portion of its development funds to making more SUVs, which European president Jim Farley believes are becoming the “preferred family cars”.

The new Focus is unlikely to grow in length or width, but is tipped to have about 50mm more in the wheelbase to match its rivals for rear leg room. It will also deliver weight savings of around 50kg, model for model, although precise figures are still being calculated. Efficiency will be high on the agenda; Ford will undoubtedly improve on the current car’s aerodynamics. It will also launch a new pure electric version as one of a dozen electric cars promised last year by Farley. Additionally, the company has been experimenting with hybrid models, which are already successful in its US line-up, but there are no sure signs yet of a Focus hybrid.

The Focus's engine range will centre heavily on the successful 1.0-litre Ecoboost three-cylinder petrol engine – available in 99bhp, 123bhp and 138bhp versions – and there are also likely to be 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre petrol units in several power outputs (with up to 275bhp) for the ST-Line and full-fat ST versions. The staple diesel will again be the 1.5 TDCi, although a 2.0-litre diesel may still be offered for ST performance models. Ford is likely, for the time being at least, to stick with its six-speed Powershift twin-clutch gearbox as the European automatic option.

The Focus also looks set to be offered with a plug-in hybrid variant.

Like the Fiesta, the new Focus will be launched in multiple variants to create a staggered line-up arrival. The Focus programme’s similarity to the Fiesta’s is no surprise, since the project is now under the management of Ford’s small-car guru, Darren Palmer, whose team recently delivered the new Fiesta, Ka+ and a dramatically improved Ecosport B-segment SUV.

An estate model will likely be available from launch, as will top-end Vignale models. Later on, Ford will launch a high-riding Focus Active, along the lines of the Fiesta Active, in order to take advantage of burgeoning demand for 'lifestyle' cars. There will be several models; base cars will have a regular front-wheel drive system, but there is likely to be a four-wheel drive option utilising hardware from the existing Kuga SUV.

An ST-Line which offers the looks of Ford’s faster cars without the outright performance will also arrive in the future, before a proper ST model and hardcore RS variant. The latter is due with a hybrid powertrain.

Although the RS will be the most driver-focused, all variants will be engineered with a clear focus to stand out as good handling cars. Bakaj said that “The goal on dynamics has been clear: to put us firmly and clearly back in the number one spot. The refinement is improved again.

He added that "the car will be characterised by efficiency, be it of the packaging or fuel economy", supporting earlier information provided to Autocar that the new Focus will be more carefully packaged than ever to offer enhanced passenger space in key areas, even though it is no bigger externally.

"[Cabin] technology will be best-in class," added Bakaj. "The styling will give the car a unique personality. It’s an incredible all-rounder.”

As shown by spy pictures, the interior will be simpler and more stylish; the company’s designers privately having previously admitted that they "over-delivered” on dashboard complexity in the previous Fiesta and Focus. The fascia, in particular, will be simpler and less cluttered, with more functions activated via a prominent central touchscreen.

Ford releases teasers of next-generation Focus

Ford has officially released a teaser image and video of the next-generation Focus hatchback which is expected to be revealed on the 10 April 2018 and with a potential South African market introduction in 2019.

The new Ford Focus hatchback will be larger, but lighter, feature much cleaner lines and a raft of new onboard technologies. Based on a development of the existing C2 platform, the new Focus is expected to sit lower, wider and longer (the latter attribute certainly in the case of the sedan) than the current model. As is the case with the Fiesta, there should be a number of trim lines, including the sportier ST-Line and the upmarket Vignale (replete with chrome detailing and LED head- and tail lamps).

The engine line-up has yet to be confirmed, but over and above weight saving measures such as the more extensive aluminium and high-tensile steel in the body construction, the Blue Oval will utilise its 1.0-litre EcoBoost turbocharged petrol engine in various states of tune as well as the 1.5-litre 4-cylinder turbodiesel. Let's not forget the performance ST version either. The manual transmissions will feature 6 ratios, but it remains to be seen whether the controversial 6-speed dual-clutch Powershift automatic option will be upgraded or replaced.

Ford Is Teasing Their Next-Gen Focus And It Looks Sleek

Ford is whetting everyone’s appetites for the new Ford Focus by teasing some of its slick new features ahead of its global unveiling in China and Europe on April 10. And it looks like the Focus is getting a semiformal makeover.

This car is a little classier than the Ford Focus we’re used to. Automotive News reported that Jim Farley, Ford’s head of global markets, is targeting a higher margin sales in hopes of achieving more profitability. Basically—it’s not going to be a car for the Regular Joe, but Ford is hoping that its improvements will encourage people with money to spend it.

Some of the more notable features of the new Focus featured in the clip include daytime running lights that cut through the headlamps, model lettering across the tailgate, a sculpted hood, and a prominent grille. Hungarian website Vezess acquired a spy shot in February showing that this model will have more pronounced wheel arches. The overall look is, honestly, pretty classy. If you’re in the market for a new hatchback, the Focus might be the next place to look.

Ford plans on revealing the Focus on April 10 in Shanghai and London simultaneously, with Shanghai unveiling the station wagon and London the hatchback and, very likely, the station wagon. It’s also speculated that the London reveal will include new model lines and variants as well.

Unfortunately for those of us in the US, we’re going to have to wait until the latter half of 2019 to get our hands on one. We’re getting the Focus sedans manufactured in China, and it’s not clear if any other body styles will be available later on. Still, it looks like Ford might be a company to watch out for if you’re in the market for a compact car soon.

As a focus fanboi, I'm hesitant to buy a Ford, reliability and accountability hasn't been Ford's strong points for years.
 
Surprised this thread is generating so much interest even before the new model is actually unveiled. I will have limited connectivity (will be in Durbz) from the 10th onwards but I'll try my best to place updates here in a timely manner.

If news breaks before I can update the thread do feel free to update it.

The Focus lettering reminds me of ye olde Land Rover Discovery with the marque's name spread across the bumper
