After years of screaming for it, and mild speculation almost exactly a year ago that it could happen, Mazda’s dealership model codes for the 2021 model year finally introduce a turbocharged Mazda 3.
Details of a Mazda dealership’s extranet system sent in to Jalopnik from an accurate source (who was right about the diesel CX-5's eventual second-debut last year) appear to show a bevy of new model codes for the Mazda 3, 6, CX-5 and CX-9 for the 2021 model year. It all hints to some exciting stuff we should see very, very soon.
The big news is that, as seen in screenshots of Mazda’s dealer system sent to Jalopnik, it appears the 2021 Mazda 3 will be offered with a turbo trim on the sedan and hatchback bodies. It will only be available with all-wheel drive.
More interestingly, there’s the “MAZDA3 HB PP TURBO” in the list. “HB” stands for hatchback, and “PP”could stand for a number of things. Is it shorthand for “Preferred Package,” “Premium Package,” or potentially a “Performance Package?” It’s not yet clear.
HOWEVER, all turbo models are only listed as “6A,” which would mean they’re only available with an automatic. The 2.5-liter hatchback is still the only manual Mazda 3 (that suddenly seems easier to turbocharge yourself).

The publication claims to be in possession of screenshots from a Mazda dealer’s system showing both the hatch and saloon will soon be available with forced induction. Interestingly, the engine will reportedly be mated with a six-speed automatic gearbox and all-wheel drive (in the US, anyway).

Mazda will debut a new turbocharged engine in July and it could herald a return of the company’s hot hatch business.
The fourth-generation Mazda3 platform, with its striking design, is expected to receive the new Mazda 2.5-litre petrol engine. Due for its global technology debut in early July, this new engine will be turbocharged – significantly boosting its power and torque outputs.
Mazda produces a 2.5-litre turbocharged engine in its CX-5 (sold in Australia, not South Africa), configured with an all-wheel drivetrain that will in all probability be the mechanical foundation for this new high-performance Mazda3 hot hatchback.
Although exact engine performance statistics have not been confirmed, it is expected that Mazda’s new 2.5-litre turbocharged engine will be good for 186 kW and 420 Nm. Those numbers would classify it is as a contemporary hot hatch, capable of rivalling VW’s Golf GTI. Driving all four wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission, this blown four-pot will generate 169 kW and 420 N.m, just like it does in the Mazda6 and CX-5 offered in some markets.

It turns out that the initial numbers weren't incorrect; they pertain to the engine's performance when operating on 87 RON. Torque is sent to the i-Activ all-wheel-drive system via a 6-speed torque-converter automatic transmission and, while we're all hoping for claimed performance figures, Mazda has not shared any. Still, we anticipate a 0-to-100 kph sprint time of about 6 seconds.
Given the local market's predilection for hot hatchbacks, which explains why the Volkswagen Golf GTI has outsold its lesser 7.5-generation siblings by a ratio of about 4 to 1 and Hyundai and Honda offer the i30 N and Civic Type R in South Africa – but no other derivatives of those cars' respective ranges – it stands to reason that Mazda would be well served by introducing a hot hatch version of the Mazda3 in the local market. Hot-hatch aficionados would surely welcome the 2.5 Turbo 5-door in our market, in which the Hiroshima-based firm previously sold both the 2.3-litre turbocharged, all-wheel-drive 1st-generation- and 2.5-litre turbocharged 2nd-generation Mazda3 MPS derivatives.

Looks like my company will be scrapping the Mazda 3 as the company car.
It's turning out to be expensive to maintain, have had a number of cars with the same faults on the park distance sensors, but the main reason is there aren't any available.
Mazda said we can get 1 vehicle on December and then 3 in May. Which is not going to work.
So I guess those that have a mazda already will keep it, and the rest of us have no clue as to the replacement.

Should I buy one?
The 3 100th Anniversary edition is pitched at Mazda fans who want something a little bit special for their money. When you consider the £29,995 price is a modest £1055 more than an equivalent, standard 3 GT Sport, yet adds bespoke visual details, extra equipment and the knowledge that your car is just one of a 100 in the UK, it’s a pretty appealing proposition for those already wise to the 3’s left-field appeal.
