The 2022 A3 starts at $33,900 and the S3 at $44,900
The Audi A3 is in its fourth-generation in America for 2022 and the entry into Audi here, and priced like it. Credit to Audi, I suppose, for still bringing the A3 and S3 to the States at all.
That is because, as we all know, small sedans like the A3 are deeply out of fashion in the States, and Audi only sells about 10,000 A3s a year here, though if Audi hasn’t given up so far on the A3 in America it is unlikely to do so anytime soon.
On Thursday, Audi released pricing and confirmed specifications for the American version of the 2022 A3 and S3. The A3 starts at $33,900, the A3 Quattro at $35,900 and the S3 at $44,900, all in addition to a required $1,045 destination charge.
The A3 has a 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder that sends up to 201 horsepower through a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. That is also mated to a 48-volt mild hybrid system that is a first in an A3; in “many driving situations,” Audi says, you can use this system to keep the engine turned off. The sportier S3 has a four-cylinder as well, but this one is more pissed off, making 306 horsepower, or 18 horsepower more than the outgoing S3. The S3 also has bigger brakes and optional suspension upgrades.

Audi South Africa has quietly added the price lists for its new-generation A3 and S3 models to its local website, and buyers can expect to pay from R561 000 for the Sportback variants and R576 000 for the Sedan.

As for standard features, the Audi A3 base models come with 16-inch alloy wheels, manual air conditioning, cruise control, push-button start, rain and light sensors, Ambient Lighting Package, leather-wrapped multi-function steering wheel, fabric seat upholstery, digital instrument cluster and the Audi MMI Radioplus infotainment system with six speaker and Audi Connect remote and emergency services.

Pricing and some specifications for the all-new Audi A3 plus S3 performance derivatives were spotted on Audi South Africa’s website. Here are the details ahead of the vehicle’s imminent launch.
The 4th generation Audi A3 and S3 are due to land in SA in July/August 2021. While visually the design has not changed radically, with the real upgrades occurring under the skin.
In terms of size, the new model is a bit bigger and longer. The newer models are 18 mm wider, while the track width on the axles has been increased by 11mm. The 4th-gen Audi A3 and S3 are underpinned by the MQB platform, which also forms the basis of the Volkswagen Golf, Volkswagen Tiguan and Audi Q3 to name but a few.
The South African launch is scheduled to take place in the last week of July 2021. We’ll update this article with trim level differences as soon as we have that info.

Audi South Africa is offering an all-petrol lineup for the A3 Sportback and A3 sedan. Kicking off the range is the 35 TFSI which is the 1.4-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder petrol motor and it produces 110 kW and 250 Nm. Audi claims a 0-100 kph of 8.2 seconds and the vehicle comes with an automatic transmission.
Next up is the 40 TFSI, which is brisk, with a claimed 0-100 kph of 7.4 seconds, thanks to its 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine delivering 140 kW and 320 Nm. It too features an S tronic dual-clutch transmission.
When it comes to fuel economy, the sedan is the thriftier of the two body styles. The 35 TFSI Sedan consumes 6.1 L/100 km on the combined cycle, while the 35 TFSI Sportback manages 6.2 L/100km. Fuel economy figures for the 40 TFSI are to be confirmed later.

But the Audi A1 and VW T-Cross use the 1.5 with the 7 speed DSG.. Strange that the A3 gets the 1.4. I believe the Golf was meant to launch with the 1.4 as well.

The Sportback is now in its fourth generation, while the sedan is in its second. Both body styles share the same architecture and drivetrains and are available in the hot(ter) S3 guise. Come the second quarter of 2022, Audi South Africa will introduce the RS 3 Sportback and RS 3 sedan to the local market.
The A3 Sportback is slightly bigger than the model it replaces, coming in at 4.34m in length and 1.82m wide. Audi claims a boot space of 380L that can expand to 1 200L when the rear seats are folded flat. The A3 sedan is 15cm longer than the Sportback, with the remaining dimensions left unchanged. With the rear seats erected, boot space is rated at 425L. The tailgate for both the Sportback and sedan can be electronically operated upon request.

The all-new Audi S3 has touched down in South Africa, but petrolheads noticed that the outgoing model has a touch more power. During the launch of the all-new Audi A3, we asked Audi SA for clarity.
Detuning vehicles for different markets is not an unusual practice. Certain climates and grades of fuel can affect a vehicle’s performance and when it comes to the powerful turbocharged offerings, heat is the devil. Also, with varying petrol qualities around the world, the manufacturers would rather err on the side of caution than risk long-term reliability issues.
Volkswagen Group has done this a few times over the years with its performance products. The Volkswagen Golf R’s European market model boasted a bit more power than its South African counterpart, until early 2019. As SA was tagged as a Hot Weather Climate market, we got the 213 kW derivative, as opposed to the 228 kW model.
Awkwardly, the Audi S3 had the full-fat 228 kW right from the get-go. By February 2019, the Volkswagen Golf 7.5 R had seen its outputs climb to 228 kW and 400 Nm of torque (up 20 Nm as well), as well as gain the feisty Akrapovic exhaust system.
Now, this is where things get interesting. The previous-generation Audi S3 had 228 kW and 400 Nm on offer, but the all-new model’s 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine produces 213 kW and 400 Nm. We asked Audi SA about this difference during the launch of the all-new model and representatives had this to say about the situation:
The short answer is around product strategy for a particular market/region. All markets have the necessary approvals or strategic directions for Audi AG.
Bigger markets or regions – like Europe, for example – receive priority in terms of first to market introductions, specific features/innovations being released as well as new engine development (like EU6 – which generally comes with newer innovations – mild hybrid, higher performance, etc, etc).
