As we look forward to the arrival of the new-generation A3 Sportback on the local market in early 2021 – when it will resume its premium hatchback rivalry with the BMW 1 Series and Mercedes-Benz A-Class – we also anticipate the unveiling of its RS3 flagship.

The previous-generation model was powered by a 2.5-litre 5-cylinder turbopetrol motor that produced 294 kW and 480 Nm of torque (in hatchback as well as sedan guise), and many enthusiasts hoped that having reportedly blocked sister brand Volkswagen from appropriating the charismatic 5-pot engine for the R derivative of the Golf 8 range, Audi would carry over its charismatic powerplant to the new 4th-generation A3 Sportback (Typ 8Y).

2020 Audi S3: hot hatch and saloon spotted undisguised

New spy shots show 306bhp S3 hatchback and saloon in production form ahead of a reveal later this year

Following the unveiling of the overhauled A3 in March, Audi is gearing up to launch the hot S3 variant, and our snappers have caught it undisguised in saloon and hatchback forms.

Prototypes spotted testing at the Nurburgring appear to be production-ready, and bear a similar evolutionary look to the standard car. We've driven a heavily camouflaged S3 prototype, but these new images show off the model's subtle, performance-oriented styling tweaks.

As with the outgoing car, the S3 will adopt a set of quad exhaust pipes housed in a diffuser-style rear bumper, bespoke performance alloy wheels, larger brake discs and slightly extended wheel arches for a sportier stance. Bespoke badging at the front and rear, not featured on these prototypes, will also likely feature.

The S3, which is set to get more power and a significant technology upgrade, will be part of an eleven-strong A3 model line-up due before 2022.

Revealed in five-door hatchback form, using the current car's MQB platform, the A3 will also offer four-door saloon and, eventually, five-door liftback variants. The latter is expected to take the Sportback name as the three-door A3 was discontinued back in 2017.

Volkswagen Golf sibling promises improved ride comfort and sharper handling, plus a mild-hybrid engine

The new Audi A3, featuring a dramatic overhaul inside and a mild-hybrid powertrain for the first time, is now available to order in the UK, priced from £22,410.

Both the saloon and Sportback variants have arrived on the market at the same time, despite staggered unveilings. The saloon is available in four trim levels, while the Sportback gains an additional Technik entry-level trim, which comes equipped with 16in alloy wheels, LED headlights, Audi's new MMI infotainment system and a 10.25in virtual cockpit as standard.

The new Audi A3, featuring a dramatic overhaul inside and a mild-hybrid powertrain for the first time, is now available to order in the UK, priced from £22,410.

Both the saloon and Sportback variants have arrived on the market at the same time, despite staggered unveilings. The saloon is available in four trim levels, while the Sportback gains an additional Technik entry-level trim, which comes equipped with 16in alloy wheels, LED headlights, Audi's new MMI infotainment system and a 10.25in virtual cockpit as standard.

Sport trim, priced from £26,175, adds electric mirrors, dual-zone climate control, 17in alloy wheels and LED daytime running lights, while the second-from-top S Line package gains privacy glass, sports seats, LED interior lighting and 18in alloys. Vorsprung trim heads up the range from £39,075, bringing with it matrix headlights, a black-themed styling pack, a Bang & Olufsen sound system and additional driver safety aids.

Holy ****balls, I priced a Base model with just two driver aid options, not even heated seats or nav or anything fancy, and it worked out to a whopping €44k :eek::eek::eek:

Should I buy one?

The A3 Saloon is a solid car that does what Audis do: impresses with material choice in the most visible spaces (there are some hard plastics lower down in the cabin) and with conspicuous technology on top of everyday mechanicals before being given a dusting of not one premium halo but four.

New images give us a closer look at SA-bound Audi A3 Sedan

South Africans wanting to get their hands on the new Audi A3 Sedan and its Sportback hatch sibling will have to wait until at least the second quarter of 2021.

And it’s certainly going to be a busy year for the Ingolstadt based brand, with 12 new model introductions scheduled for 2021, although many of these are facelifts rather than outright redesigns.

But the 2021 Audi A3 models are brand spanking new, and we now get to have a closer look at them in these new pictures that were released to coincide with their European launch.

Although they continue on the VW Group’s MQB platform, the Sedan and Sportback have a completely new look inside and out, while also growing in dimension. The sedan, for the record, is 150mm longer than the Sportback, and compared to its predecessor, the four-door has grown 40mm longer, 20mm wider and 10mm taller.

A good 20 years ago, Audi opened up the sporty premium compact market segment with the first S3. Now the brand is presenting the new generation - an S3 Sportback and an S3 Sedan. Its 2.0 TFSI engine produces 228 kW (310 PS) of power and 400 Nm (295.0 lb-ft) of torque. Both models accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62.1 mph) in 4.8 seconds. A seven-speed S tronic, the quattro drive with intelligent control, and an S-specific sport suspension with optional damper control deliver the power to the road effortlessly. A number of other new features - including the operating concept, infotainment, and assist systems - round off the high-tech character of the S3 models.

Should I buy one?

With the battering that diesel has taken over the past few years and a general move towards electrification, the concept of an oil-burning family hatchback seems a bit of a strange one these days. Unless I were planning on making regular long journeys, I would, as a private buyer, be inclined to opt for the petrol.

Fleet buyers might still be keen on a diesel, but it’s worth pointing out that this 2.0-litre engine isn’t RDE2-compliant, so it gets slapped with a 4% benefit-in-kind surcharge when diesel versions of the BMW 1 Series and Mercedes A-Class don't.

Otherwise, there’s enough to like about the A3 to make it recommendable. It looks smart, has a practical interior, offers decent performance and manages stable, secure driving dynamics. There’s a more appealing tech offering now, too, which will no doubt curry favour with many. Sure, it’s a bit of a bland device to drive, but when has that not applied to a non-RS Audi?

The signature Audi compact family performance car range gains all the styling and design drama you would expect from an S3.

In terms of size, the new S3 Sportback and sedan variants are longer than before, by 30- and 40mm – respectively. Balancing the increase in bumper-to-bumper length, is 30mm increase in width, rendering both the Sportback and sedan with some rather tidy proportions. These new S3s also ride 15mm lower than Audi’s conventional A3 models

Distinguishing these S3 models from other fourth-generation A3s are larger front air intakes, a diamond pattern grille and aluminium lookalike wing mirror end caps. At the rear Audi’s designers have integrated a functional diffuser, which is framed by twin exhaust ends at each corner.

Audi South Africa has confirmed the new Audi A3 range is due for local market introduction around the 2nd quarter of 2021, and we expect these performance versions to follow.

Does the original posh hatchback remain ahead of its rivals for the new generation?

Depending on your priorities, you really could argue why any of these cars should stand atop the podium. But for the way in which it blends practicality, dynamic sophistication and superior refinement, victory has to go to the A3. It’s a narrow victory, though, and the temptation to knock it off its perch because of its downgraded interior was very real. Had the 1 Series generated a bit more grip, it would have snatched the win.

So, the A3 remains on top. But the shadow it casts is shorter than ever.
