2020 Audi A3 (4th Generation)

Handsome AF.

Is this a "facelift" or "all new" car. It's so hard to tell these days.

New Audi A3 revealed with styling overhaul and new interior

Volkswagen Golf sibling also promises improved ride comfort and sharper handling, plus a mild-hybrid engine

Audi has revealed the fourth-generation A3 Sportback, with a dramatic overhaul inside and a mild-hybrid powertrain for the first time.

The tried-and-tested styling of Audi’s best-selling model in Europe remains, although the company has tried to make it look sportier to address the absence of a three-door model, which was culled during the previous generation.

Audi’s new A3 has a nearly identical footprint to its predecessor, at 4.34m long and 1.43m high, but is 3cm wider, at 1.82m, giving more elbow and shoulder room for passengers

The engine line-up at launch is a 148bhp 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol unit (TFSI) and a 2.0-litre diesel (TDI) with 114bhp or 148bhp. Soon after, a 108bhp 1.0-litre three-cylinder TFSI will launch alongside the most notable unit: a second version of the 1.5 TFSI with mild-hybrid technology. This will mark the first time the A3 has been offered as a mild hybrid, although a petrol-electric plug-in hybrid (PHEV) entered production in 2014. Two PHEV variants of the new model will go on sale at a later date.

The mild-hybrid A3 uses a belt-driven starter-alternator to feed a 48V system that can recuperate 16bhp during deceleration and gentle braking. It can also glide with its engine off for up to 40 seconds. There are no official plans to add this tech to other engines in the A3, but powertrain engineer Michael Vogl said that it could be integrated into almost any powertrain.

Audi A3 Sportback

Audi established the premium compact class segment with the A3 in 1996. The fourth generation of the success model is now being introduced on the market - sporty, digitalized and fully connected. Beneath the progressive design of the body of the new Audi A3 Sportback lie many innovations from the full-size class, for example the infotainment, suspension, and driver assist systems.

Distinctive: design and lighting

The new Audi A3 Sportback features compact proportions and a sporty design. The wide Singleframe and large air inlets at the front end accentuate the dynamic character of the premium compact car. The shoulder of the body extends in a smooth line from the headlights to the rear lights. The surface below is curved inward - a new element of Audi's design that puts a stronger emphasis on the wheel arches. The digital daytime running lights of the Matrix LED headlights are a further innovation. They consist of a pixel array made up of LED segments in a three by five arrangement that create special light signatures and make the A3 immediately recognizable. The sporty and sophisticated design is continued in the interior with the new shifter, aluminum or carbon inlays, striking door openers and an instrument panel with a black-panel look. Seat upholstery made of recycled PET bottles and adorned with stylish contrasting stitching are being used for the first time.

With this latest A3, the brand has decided to forego its three-door hatchback roots and only produce the new version as a five-door Sportback with a sedan following later in the lifecycle.

Some of the new design features a radical switchblade headlamp shape and intricate LED groupings. The premium hatch is bigger than before but retains the same wheelbase. Bumper-to-bumper the A3 Sportback measures 4.34 m, which is 30 mm longer than its predecessor.

The A3 makes a more radical shift on the inside, with a bigger and more central infotainment system and Lamborghini-like air vents that protrude above the dash top. What’s most impressive, however, is that the new MMI operating system has ten times more computing power than its predecessor. In addition to a beefed up navigation system with high-resolution Google Earth images, the system offers car-to-infrastructure services (in Europe) that allow the vehicle to communicate with traffic lights and find parking spots. Customers will also be able to lock and unlock the car, as well as start the engine, through their Android phone or Amazon Alexa.

The new A3 Sportback is set to reach South African shores during the second quarter of 2021. The local line-up and prices will be announced closer to the time.

Audi says it wanted its new A3 Sportback to look like a hot hatch

The designer responsible for the exterior of the new Audi A3 Sportback says he wanted to imbue the fourth-generation model with “typical hot hatch properties”.

Of course, the actual hot versions are surely on the way, in the form of the S3 Sportback and the flagship RS3 Sportback.

Speaking to Autocar after the reveal of the latest version of Ingolstadt’s midsize hatchback, A3 exterior designer Juan Carlos Huerta Martinez suggested the new model needed to be sportier than its predecessor.

New (fourth-gen) Audi A3 Sportback: production kicks off in Ingolstadt

The Ingolstadt factory has built almost 3,8 million examples of the A3, with the nameplate also produced in Brussels from 2007 to 2009. The outgoing A3 Sedan is built in Ingolstadt and Győr, while the A3 Cabriolet is also produced by Audi Hungaria. The A3 Sportback and A3 Sedan additionally roll off the production line at the Chinese Foshan plant, while the A3 Sedan is also put together in Aurangabad in India and São José dos Pinhais in Brazil.

Spy Shots: 2021 Audi RS3 Sedan

The first prototypes of the all-new Audi RS3 sedan have been spotted on public roads. Here's what we know about the Mercedes-AMG CLA 45's nemesis.

The Audi RS3 is a rival to the Mercedes-AMG A45 S, but in sedan guise, it's fair to compare like-for-like and the CLA 45 S becomes the real opponent. Audi revealed its 4th-generation A3 Sportback and while there's considerable interest in the mainstream consumer models, petrolheads are chomping at the bit for news regarding the S3 and particularly, the fearsome RS3.

Wait, what? New Audi A3 Sportback rendered in ‘base-spec’ form

We suspect we’ll be seeing some pretty bizarre renders over the next little while (as country after country goes into lockdown amid the coronavirus outbreak), starting with this “base-spec” version of the new Audi A3 Sportback.

The handiwork of X-Tomi Design, the render shows what a stripped-out, budgeting-beating version of Ingolstadt’s fourth-generation A3 might look like.
