Verdict
The Audi A3 Sportback had elevated itself to the sharp end of the hatchback segment once more. A big evolution in its design is backed up with a more refined, yet still-involving, driving experience that makes the BMW 1 Series seem bloated and ought to worry the Mercedes-Benz A-Class. While it is technically an evolution of the previous model, so much of the A3 Sportback has changed inside (and out) that it looks and feels like a totally different car. It’s every bit the high-tech model that many buyers will expect from Audi.

'Extreme' new Audi RS3 Sportback variant coming with 331 kW – report
A fresh report out of Australia claims Audi is developing an “extreme” version of its upcoming RS3 Sportback, with the flagship variant boasting a peak power output as lofty as 331 kW.
According to whichcar.com.au, the Ingolstadt-based firm will first launch the standard (for lack of a better term) version of its new hot hatch, featuring uprated outputs of 309 kW and 500 N.m from its turbocharged 2,5-litre five-cylinder petrol heart.
Those figures are up from the current model’s 294 kW and 480 N.m, and would put the new RS3 Sportback pretty much on a level pegging with the latest Mercedes-AMG A45 S, which generates 310 kW and 500 N.m from its turbocharged 2,0-litre four-cylinder engine.

The sub-limousine luxury sedan category might be shrinking worldwide, but that has not stopped Audi from investing money in a new A3 four-door.
Although crossover and SUV mania drives the bulk of global customer demand for premium vehicle brands, the world’s two most important markets (America and China) remain very committed to sedans.
The Chinese especially see any extended wheelbase sedan as desirable. Being driven is a sign of supreme status in China, so even smaller vehicles have more comfortable backseats, courtesy of special Chinese long-wheelbase variants.
Audi is catering fo this with its new A3 L. The car was recently spotted whilst inside a production facility and although Audi has not released exact technical details, it is quite plainly a fourth-generation A3 with more space between the axles.

As mentioned, the all-new Audi A3 is expected to reach South Africa in the 2nd quarter of 2020. At the time of writing, only the 5-door Sportback body style had been revealed. There's still the S3 performance derivative to come, as well as the expected sedan. There won't be a convertible this time though as Audi confirmed this model would be canned in August 2019. We're also expecting some fireworks from the next-generation Audi RS3, which we've seen in a sedan body style undergoing testing. In terms of pricing, the current Audi A3 starts at R454 410, so we're estimating it to start under the R500 000 mark.

The range-topping model is set to take its power from the same turbocharged five-cylinder 2.5-litre petrol engine as the new RS Q3 performance SUV. The 394bhp output of this unit will make the RS3 one of the most powerful cars in its segment, just below the 416bhp Mercedes-AMG A45 S.

The second generation of an Audi success story is here - the A3 Sedan. The compact four-door model is digitally and fully connected - from the infotainment through to the assist systems. Beneath the elegant body, new drives and refined suspension tuning ensure a driving experience that is as efficient as it is dynamic. The A3 Sedan will be on the lots of European dealerships beginning in summer 2020.
The new Audi A3 Sedan is presented in a sporty, elegant look. Compared with its predecessor, it is now 4 centimeters (1.6 in) longer at 4.50 meters (14.8 ft), while its wheelbase remains unchanged. Its width has increased by 2 centimeters (0.8 in) to 1.82 meters (6.0 ft) and it is now 1 centimeter (0.4 in) taller at 1.43 meters (4.7 ft). This has yielded an increase in headroom - a good 2 centimeters (0.8 in) in the front thanks to the lower position of the driver seat - and some more elbow room. At 425 liters (15.0 cu ft), the luggage capacity is exactly the same as in the predecessor model.

The new Audi A3 Sedan has been fully revealed, slotting in alongside the fouth-generation A3 Sportback unveiled in March 2020 and ready to take on the Mercedes-Benz A-Class Sedan.
Audi South Africa tells CARmag.co.za both the new A3 Sportback and A3 Sedan are scheduled to arrive locally in the second quarter of 2021.
The second generation of the A3 Sedan is about 40 mm longer than the original (measuring 4 500 mm nose to tail, which makes it around 150 mm longer than the A3 Sportback), while its wheelbase is unchanged. The saloon’s width has been increased by 20 mm to 1 820 mm, while the newcomer interestingly stands some 10 mm taller than its forebear at 1 430 mm.
Audi says the latter increase has resulted in extra headroom, with an additional 20 mm of noggin space on offer in the front (the driver’s seat has been lowered, too). At a claimed 425 litres, the sedan’s luggage capacity matches that of the original.
