Bentley Flying Spur Hybrid Odyssean Edition hints at the brand’s EV future​


The Bentley Flying Spur Hybrid Odyssean Edition has been unveiled as a step forward towards electrification for the luxury British brand. This limited edition enters as a celebration for a new powertrain that was added to the sedan’s range earlier this month.

Granting the Bentley Flying Spur Hybrid Odyssean Edition with its eco-friendly tag is a 2,9-litre V6 petrol engine mated to an advanced electric motor that delivers a combined power output of 400 kW and 750 N.m of torque. With this, 0-100 km/h is completed in a claimed 4,1 seconds. The electric motor sources power from a 14,1 kWh lithium-ion battery which can carry the sedan for 40 km independently. The total range for the hybrid petrol-electric system has been quoted at 700 km.

Being a special launch model, the Bentley Flying Spur Hybrid Odyssean Edition comes standard with the brand’s touring specification package which includes an array of driver assistance systems, an electrically deployed and illuminated Flying B bonnet ornament, LED welcome lamps, leather headliner, three dimensional diamond leather upholstery to the doors and rear quarters, a rotating display on the centre console and interior mood lighting.

New Bentley Flying Spur Mulliner as 'pinnacle' of GT range

Bentley’s Mulliner coachbuilding division has turned its hand to the Flying Spur saloon which is claimed to "the ultimate in four-door luxury" and will be the firm's most expensive series-priduction model yet.

Revealed at Monterey Car Week in California, the Flying Spur Mulliner will be the third member of the Bentley Mulliner Collections line-up that is offered by the Crewe firm's bespoke coachbuild division, joining similarly top-end versions of the Continental GT coupé and convertible.

The new machine will be offered with all three Bentley powertrains available for the Flying Spur: the V6 plug-in hybrid, V8 and W12. The PHEV version will be the first Mulliner model to use an electrified powertrain.

The Flying Spur Mulliner is differentiated from the rest of the range through a subtle makeover and a raft of bespoke features. The exterior features exclusive two-tone 22in wheels with self-levelling centre caps that keep the Bentley logo upright as the wheels rotate and a ‘double diamond’ mesh pattern for the front grille and lower air intakes. There are also silver-capped wing mirrors, an electronically deployed Bentley logo and jewel fuel and petrol caps.

The interior has also been heavily reworked, including Mulliner-braned tread plates and deep-pile mats, embroidered seats, ‘3D’ leather on the door panels, and electrically folding picnic tables for rear passengers. The interior will be offered in eight custom-designed three-colour combinations. Bentley claims that the 'diamond in diamons' quilting on the interior upholstery took 18 months to develop, with each diamons involving 712 individual stictches.

The Bentley Flying Spur Mulliner has been introduced by the British marque as a new flagship offering for its four-door grand tourer range. The Mulliner spec will be available to the new V6 petrol-electric hybrid powertrain as well as the V8 and W12.

Transforming the luxury sedan into a Bentley Flying Spur Mulliner is an exclusive set of 22-inch wheels finished in a grey painted and polished paint with self-levelling wheel caps that remain upright as the wheels rotate. A “Double Diamond” front grille and chrome front lower grille are matched by bespoke Mulliner-branded wing vents and Satin Silver painted mirror caps. The electronically deployed and illuminated Bentley Flying B is complemented by an array of jewel fuel and oil caps.

Within the cabin of the Bentley Flying Spur Mulliner, illuminated outer treadplates and deep-pile overmats are fitted. This is offered with a curation of eight custom-made, triple-colour combinations. The trimmed cockpit is complemented by accent colour piping and unique embroidery to the hand-stitched seats.

The Mulliner driving specification is fitted as standard which upholsters the seats with brings the diamond-in-diamond quilting while three-dimensional leather is applied to the doors. Contrast seat piping matches the accent that surrounds the occupants from the centre console, around the instrument panel and finishes beneath the door waistrail, highlighting the Bentley B chrome inlays.

This diamond-in-diamond interior quilting involves an embroidery process that took the brand 18 months to develop. Each diamond contains exactly 712 individual stitches with each one aligned to the exact centre of the diamond it creates.

Bentley’s Flying Spur and Bentayga models are to receive a new “cutting-edge onboard entertainment system with integrated Bentley Rear Entertainment available as an option. Offering the latest connected technology, the system is highly flexible, paired with class-leading Naim for Bentley audio which is already available in both models.

Much like an Apple TV or Chromecast system, the new Bentley system offers a ‘bring your own device’ concept which allows customers to stream content from their own smartphone, computer or tablet directly to the Bentley Rear Entertainment system, without the need to connect by cable.

The system incorporates two 1920 x 1080 HD 10.1-inch removable touchscreen tablets attached to the back of the front seats and feature crystal clear graphics for clear viewing in all lighting conditions.

Mansory has been mighty prolific of late. First there was the Stallone GTS – an 818bhp Ferrari 812 GTS – and then came the 769bhp Audi RS7 complete with obligatory carbon bodywork. Now there’s this too – the German tuner’s take on the Bentley Flying Spur.

The exterior is completely blacked out, with aggressive new front and rear bumpers, a little lip spoiler and a monstrous carbon fibre bonnet. Those wheels are 22-inches each too.

Oh, and there’s the small matter of an upgrade to the 6.0-litre W12, meaning it now puts out 700bhp (up from 626bhp as ‘standard’) and 738lb ft of torque. As a result, 0-62mph is dispatched in a ridiculous 3.6 seconds, and top speed rises to 211mph. Useful.

What’s the future, then?

Don’t expect more advanced types of hybrid from Bentley or anyone else. These tick the boxes they need to, vault the WLTP regulations and allow owners to feel that bit better about themselves. The next step will not be range extenders or more advanced hybrids, but pure electric. Which hardly seems that much of a step given many firms are there already. But Bentley’s first isn’t due until 2025. In the meantime expect to see a hybrid Conti GT coupe (likely using this exact powertrain) along before too long.

Bentley S1 Continental Flying Spur

The S1 Continental Flying Spur in Bentley's Heritage Collection is a 1958 H.J. Mulliner model and was an inspiration to the design team at Crewe when creating today's Flying Spur. With a 180bhp 4.9 litre straight-six engine, this example has the optional automatic gearbox and air conditioning. Finished in black with grey interior, even today it is capable of covering long distances in great comfort.

The S-Series Bentleys were essentially an updated and improved version of the same R-Type Continental template of 1952, with a separate chassis, straight-six engine and bodywork by independent coachbuilders. H.J. Mulliner backed a hunch that there would be a small but discerning market for a coachbuilt four-door S1 Continental as an alternative to the factory four-door offering. Their design was balanced and elegant, with ample space for four. The new four-door was named by Arthur Talbot Johnstone, H.J. Mulliner's Managing Director, after the heraldic device of his family, the Clan Johnstone of the Scottish Borders. The first example even featured the Clan Johnston's spur mascot on its radiator grille. HJ Mulliner created 217 examples of their S1 Continental Flying Spur.

Big news in the world of very big cars – Bentley has committed to a new ‘Five-in-Five’ plan.

Now, that may sound like the latest in a series of fad diets, but it’s supposedly a future-proofing plan that’ll see Bentley introduce a new electric car every year between 2025 and 2030.

It’s a big statement from the British brand and will apparently be backed by a £2.5billion investment “to transform Bentley’s entire product portfolio”. What those cars will look like is anyone’s guess at the moment, but they will all be designed, developed and produced in Crewe.

Boss Adrian Hallmark has said that the current models - the Bentayga, the Flying Spur and the Continental GT - will be fully-electrified at some point too, though.

As part of its Beyond100 commitment launched in late 2020, Bentley had already announced that by 2026 all of its cars would either be plug-in hybrid or fully-electric. It also had a plan of being completely carbon neutral by 2030.

Bentley’s first EV to be built at legendary Crewe plant

Bentley has confirmed that their first electric car is to arrive in 2025 and will be built at the firm’s Crewe plant in the United Kingdom.

This news cements the future of the iconic factory at which 4 000 skilled workers meticulously build the brand’s motorcars by hand, with £2,5 billion (R51,4 billion) set aside for R&D at Crewe with a sharp focus on sustainability.

In an interview with Autocar in 2020, Bentley’s CEO Adrian Hallmark mentioned that Crewe had to earn the right to build Bentley EV’s ahead of it Volkswagen Group peers.

“We started building in Crewe in 1936 and we’ve invested hundreds of millions in infrastructure and certification for electrification, so we have the capability to do it,” he said.

“But the important thing to note is that we still have to be competitive, and fight to ensure the maximum possible content for our cars is made in Crewe. We are part of a group so we must prove we are the best option, but from a brand point of view, it is our mission to ensure everything can be built here.”
