Chevrolet to reveal all-new mid-engined Corvette

General Motors is getting ready to pull the covers off its all-new mid-engined Corvette in a splashy tribute to the iconic original.

The reveal will take place at a glitzy presentation in Orange County, at 8pm Pacific Daylight Time, which is 5am on Friday morning in South Africa - so if you're up that early, be sure to watch the live stream embedded at the bottom of this article.

Revved up to take on European sports cars such as the Porsche 911, the all-new model is codenamed C8 and will likely revive the Stingray nameplate.

Edmunds analyst Jessica Caldwell said the Corvette gives General Motors a sorely needed shot in the arm after a difficult year.

"A Corvette is not going to help pad margins the way a Silverado would," Caldwell said. "But from an image and excitement standpoint ... that halo effect the Corvette fills is unique."

The Chevy Silverado full-size pickup truck, a perennial best-seller, ranks among GM's most profitable vehicles.

Since 2013, GM has sold over 100 000 of the outgoing C7-model Corvettes in the US, according to Edmunds.

The 2020 Corvette Interior: That Is a Lot of Buttons

If you would like to see a borderline hilarious amount of buttons, look no further than this early leaked image of the 2020 Corvette’s interior.

Friend of Jalopnik (and sometimes C8 newsbreaker here) Bozi Tatarevic dropped the pic onto the platform that definitely pays you for doing so, Twitter:

Chevrolet Corvette C8 Stingray

Chevrolet fulfills the long-term promise of the iconic Corvette with the introduction of the new Stingray, the brand's first-ever production mid-engine Chevrolet Corvette. The sum of everything that came before it, the new Stingray is re-imagined to bring customers new levels of performance, technology, craftsmanship and luxury.

From front- to mid-engine, in under three seconds

"Corvette has always represented the pinnacle of innovation and boundary-pushing at GM. The traditional front-engine vehicle reached its limits of performance, necessitating the new layout," said GM President Mark Reuss. "In terms of comfort and fun, it still looks and feels like a Corvette, but drives better than any vehicle in Corvette history. Customers are going to be thrilled with our focus on details and performance across the board."

The jewel in the center

The new Stingray's heart is Chevy's next-generation 6.2l Small Block V-8 LT2 engine, the only naturally aspirated V-8 in the segment. It will produce 495 horsepower (369 kW) and 637 Nm (470 lb-ft ) of torque when equipped with performance exhaust - the most horsepower and torque for any entry Corvette.

Jeez looks almost Ferrari like in the front, glad they went with how it was imagined to be done in the first place. Sure Zora would be proud

Mid-engined Chevrolet Corvette C8 Stingray arrives with 495bhp V8

New mid-engined layout, a first for a production 'Vette, to take on European rivals

The new eighth-generation Chevrolet Corvette has been revealed, featuring a mid-engine layout for the first time in a bid to take on European rivals such as Porsche and Ferrari.

Since the first version of the two-seater was launched in 1953, Corvettes have featured a front-engined, rear-drive layout – but the 495bhp 6.2-litre V8 in the new C8 machine is mounted behind the driver for the first time.

Mark Reuss, the president of Chevrolet parent firm General Motors, said that “the traditional front-engined vehicle reached its limits of performance, necessitating the new layout.” He added that: “in terms of comfort and fun, it still looks and feels like a Corvette, but drives better than any vehicle in Corvette history.”

Switching to a mid-engine layout has increased the length of the new model by 137mm to 4630mm, with the wheelbase stretched to 2723mm. It is 1933mm wide, 56mm wider than the previous C7 model, although at 1234mm it is marginally lower. The new Corvette weighs 1527kg, 166kg more than previously.

While retaining some familiar design cues, the new Corvette will have a more ‘global’ look due to the new layout, with echoes of recent two-seat McLaren and Ferrari machines. Chevrolet also promised a more ‘driver-centric’ interior design, with the shorter bonnet bringing increased visibility.

First-ever mid-engined Corvette breaks cover

Chevrolet’s Corvette nameplate has just undergone its most radical transformation in its 66 year history, with the 2020 Stingray shifting from a front to a mid-engined layout.

This layout is often considered the holy grail of sports car configurations, as it allows better responsiveness, balance and sense of control as the driver sits closer to the front axle.

Dynamically this layout should also put it into closer contention with the rear-engined Porsche 911, although in its home market the Corvette will cost almost half the price of a Carrera S, with General Motors promising a base price of under $60 000 (or about R830 000 in rand speak). But with The General having exited our market, the new ‘Vette will remain a forbidden fruit to South Africans, at least for now. The good news is that GM will produce a right-hand-drive version, so perhaps an importer out there will step up to the plate.

The 2020 Stingray is not just better balanced - it’s also the fastest Corvette every, with Chevrolet claiming a sub-three-second 0-60mph (96km/h) acceleration time, when equipped with the Z51 Performance Package.

Power is provided by a new-generation normally aspirated 6.2-litre ‘Small Block’ V8 LT2 engine that produces 369kW and 637Nm, when equipped with the performance exhaust. It powers the back wheels through Chevrolet’s first eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox, designed in conjunction with Tremec and featuring a double-paddle de-clutch function that even allows the driver to disconnect the clutch by holding both paddles.

New Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Revealed

Featuring a mid-engine layout for the first time, the new Corvette Stingray has been revealed and it’s fast, very fast…

With the evacuation of General Motors and Chevrolet from South Africa in 2017, we won’t see the new Corvette Stingray on local roads but that doesn’t mean we can’t ogle from afar.

For the first time ever, a mid-engine layout has been adopted and is fitted with a next-generation LT2 6.2-litre V8 engine that produces 365 kW and 637 Nm of torque and is paired an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission that directs those numbers to the rear wheels. Power can be bumped up to 369 kW worth a Z51 Performance Package which will ensure a zero to 100 kph sprint time of under 3 seconds.

New Chevrolet Corvette could get hybrid or electric versions

Latest version of American classic launches with 6.2-litre V8 – but electrified versions will follow

The new mid-engined Chevrolet Corvette is feature electrified powertrains in the future – with a full electric version under consideration.

The new C8 version of the two-seater was launched in Los Angeles, with the initial Corvette Stingray model featuring a 495bhp, 470lb ft 6.2-litre naturally aspirated V8 engine.

Chevrolet sources have confirmed the powertrain has been designed to allow for electrification, with insiders suggesting mild hybrid, plug-in hybrid and, while less likely, full electric versions were being considered.

Asked if an electrified Corvette might feature a mild hybrid battery-based starter motor, or use a small electric engine to provide all-wheel-drive, one project member said: “you would not look stupid if you said that.”

When asked by Autocar about future electrified variants of the Corvette Mark Reuss, the president of Chevrolet parent company General Motors, said: “The company is committed to a strategy of 0-0-0, zero emissions, zero crashes and zero congestion. All of the technology rolling into this vehicle is meant to support that. This platform can carry a lot of different things into the future for General Motors.”

The 2020 C8 Corvette Will Start Under $60,000 (~ R833k)

General Motors just announced that the new 2020 Corvette will start at under $60,000. “What I can share with you tonight is this: When the 2020 Stingray goes on sale in the U.S., it will start at less than $60,000,” said Mark Reuss, president of GM, during the event livestream.

This is a huge deal. This C8 mid-engine Corvette is clearly a major step in Corvette history—one that we, and many others, feared would yield a significant bump in price. A $100,000+ price tag would take away from what has made the Corvette so compelling over the years, but a reasonable starting price for a 495 horsepower, mid-engine, eight-speed dual-clutch transmission-having Corvette?
